needed.
1. Give Jack’s physical description given on page 20. Why is his physical description
important? How does it add meaning to his characterization?
2. List proof that Jack’s retrogression has started.
3. Explain the relationship between how chapter 1 ends and how chapter 3 begins.
4. A) How many shelters have been built? Why aren’t there more?
B) What do the huts symbolize?
5. Characterize the “littluns.”
6. a) Give the 2 characters who represent the central conflict of the novel.
b) Create a conflict chart and list motifs on each side of the conflict.
c) Explain each of the motifs with examples from this chapter.
d) For extra credit points cite the quote in the chapter which best supports this
conflict.
7. Golding said that being civilized does not depend on a social or political system but on
the ethical nature of the individual, and that the problems with society are based on the
flaws (vices) of human nature. Identify the flaws of human nature that are causing problems
with the civilized society the boys are trying to establish on the island. Support choices with
specific examples from the chapter.
8. On pg. 54 Ralph thinks that “people were never quite what you thought they were.”
Why does he feel this way?
9. Characterize Simon well. Support characterization with examples from this chapter and
also from previous chapters.
10. Describe Simon’s hiding place. Why does he go there at the end of chapter 3.
11. The chapter begins with Jack’s personal expedition in the jungle and it ends with Simon’s
personal expedition in the jungle. What do these contrasting expeditions tell about each
character?
