1.2 Read before handling Ultima Expert
Ultima Expert should be handled with great care when installation is performed in the laboratory.
Due to its internal structure, it is forbidden to lift it or handle it from the right side included in the
red rectangle in the picture below.

Figure 1-7 Handling Ultima Expert

1.3 Layout of the spectrometer in the laboratory

First, check that the laboratory entrance is wider than the instrument.
Ensure that the bench and the floor are strong enough to support the spectrometer weight.
The following points must be noted:
- A space of at least 0.70 m is necessary behind the instrument and on either side. A
space of at least 1 m is necessary on left side for Ultima Expert with 0.5m or 1m poly-
chromator.
- The main power, the gas outlet (argon, nitrogen) and the water outlet (if applicable)
must be provided according with instrument location.
- Locate the instrument away from doors, windows or air conditioners, which may
cause termperature fluctuations.

 Information
Place the sample changer as close as possible to the torch compartment in order to have short con-
nections, i.e. either on the instrument table or on shelf we can supply on option.
This shortens the sample clean-out and transfer time.

1.4 Calibration samples

Emission spectrometric analysis is based on comparison, therefore it is essential that calibration
samples be available before any serious analysis begins. For ICP, almost all the calibration curves are
straight lines. For each element, the curves can therefore be determined by measuring at least two
points: a LOW point and a HIGH point. The software can also be used to obtain regression curves
with an almost unlimited number of points.

1.4.1 Standards tests in organics

Prepare the following solutions to carry out your instrument control tests:
• LOW point: deionized water in 5% HNO3
• HIGH point: in 5% HNO3, 5 ppm P, 10 ppm Pb, 1 ppm Cd, 5 ppm, Al, 15 ppm K, 68.5 ppm
Cl if needed. For simultaneous spectrometer, as many multi-elements in the program at a con-
centration of 5 ppm.
The calibration samples should be chemically compatible.
We recommend PRECIS samples that we can supply (contact your local representative).
03/25/2014

ICP Pre-installation Manual 12

1.4.2 Specific tests

For specific programs, you must provide the required calibration samples.

For organics:
Use exclusively for organic medium.
Example: lubrication oil in kerosene.
• LOW point: solvent plus base oil with the same dilution factor as for the HIGH point.
• HIGH point: as many multi-element organic solutions as strictly required to test all the ele-
ments in the program at a concentration of 5 ppm.
Take care to avoid precipitation and chemical reactions harmful to the quality of the solutions.
Our application laboratory engineers are ready to assist you in the selection of the appropriate refer-
ence calibration samples.
May we remind you that it is not part our after-sales engineers' duties to create and check your anal-
ysis programs.
On request, our application laboratory chemists are ready to assist you, after assessment of the prob-
lems to be resolved, on a preferential scale of fees.

1.5 Receiving the instrument

The equipment is provided by HORIBA Scientific departure from the factory to the
receiving dock of your company.
The handling of unloading and setting up equipment in your laboratory and your depen-
dents are not insured by HORIBA Scientific.
The equipment must be moved in the laboratory before our arrival and you must per-
form the unpacking and set it to its operating location. HORIBA Scientific will be
responsible for unpacking the accessories. If the accessories unpacking is made by you,
the warranty of these will be lost. Our service engineers are not certified to carry or lift
the material for the implementation of it on a table or bench.
It is recommended to keep the original packaging for a possible transport of the unit.

 Warning!
The instrument weighs more than 190 kg (420 lbs). To avoid injury to personnel or damage
to the instrument, always use a forklift.
First, place the instrument and its pallet on the bench. Then use the forklift to slightly lift
03/25/2014

the instrument (having made sure to protect the part of the instrument which will receive
the forks with cardboard or other material) to remove the palette by hand. Finally, slowly
lower the forklift to place the instrument on the bench.

ICP Pre-installation Manual 13

In case of damage:
The instrument has two shocks detectors: one indicating the overthrow of the device and the
other indicating any possible shock. If damage is discovered, the instrument must be main-
tained in its original packaging and damage must be reported immediately to the carrier's
delivery note, stating precisely what has been observed.
Example: The indicator has turned red tilt, the upper left corner of the box is damaged. Com-
ments should be precise.
A letter with a receipt acknowledgment must be sent to the carrier within 3 working days,
indicating that it is responsible for damages that were incurred, and asking to immediately
establish a report.
According to the Incoterms Contract, this letter should be written by the customer (EXW,
FCA, CFR, CIP) or by HORIBA Scientific (DDU if in one of the countries of the European
community).
Notice: Never open an external packaging if damage is suspected. If possible, you should
refuse delivery and return in the carrier. This will undoubtedly highlight the responsibilities of
the carrier.

1.6 Storage
The temperature of the room where the instrument is stored must be between 5°C and 40°C. The
maximum relative humidity is 90%.

ICP Pre-installation Manual 14

2 Laboratory requirements

2.1 Line power

Your installation must comply with the relevant electrical standards. Please make sure that there is a
circuit breaker and shut off system to cut the mains power in case of emergency.

2.1.1 Characteristics

Line power required: 230 V (± 10%) with earth, frequency 50 or 60Hz. Installation category: 2.
If the voltage of your laboratory is out of the defined range, or if the installation has micro-interrup-
tions which out-ranged the regulation EN 61326 regulations (half-cycle impaired) then we advise the
use of a power regulator.
We recommend an on line UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) of at least 5 kVA for the instrument
itself or 7 kVA for the ICP with accessories such as the nitrogen generator. We recommend an UPS
of 7 kVA. You may have to adapt the reaction speed of this regulation system to the reaction of our
equipment. HORIBA Scientific can provide an adapted UPS.

Please check that your installation complies with our recommandations.

2.1.2 Equipment

Two types of connection are required:

1. Spectrometer supply
The spectrometer is supplied with a 5 m electric cable with three 4 mm2 conductors (see Photo 1).
This cable has to be connected to a 230V/32 A single-phase socket with ground (not supplied) or
directly attached to the electricity distribution panel. We recommend a 40A magneto-thermal circuit
breaker (see Photo 2) is located so that it can be easily accessible to the operator (less than 4 meters)
and that it is labeled as the disconnecting device for the spectrometer.
2. Accessories
One socket 16 A-230 V with ground is required for each of the listed accessory you have: computer,
screen, printer, autosampler, closed water circuit, nitrogen generator, ultrasonic nebulizer etc. (see
photo 3).

Example of electrical connections (Photo 3)

2.2 Fluids supply

Argon and nitrogen are required to operate the spectrometer.
Notice: all the rigid pipes must be made of copper (type of copper used in refrigerating equipment)
or stainless steel and perfectly clean. The installation should be purged before the connection to the
instrument to avoid contamination of your gas by ambient air (moisture, oxygen, hydrocarbons...).

2.2.1 Instructions for use of the gas cylinders

03/25/2014

The gas cylinders must be handled with special care. Store them upright and attach them with metal
chains. If possible, store them outside the laboratory. Avoid the presence of heat higher than 50°C.

ICP Pre-installation Manual 17

The storage temperature should not be too cold (15°C minimum). Differences in output pressure
can be observed with lower temperature. Gas cylinders must be moved using a special trolley; do not
drag nor roll them.
Never empty a cylinder completely.
Contact your suppliers for further information on gases and their handling.

2.2.2 Argon

Type of argon 99.995% can be used in standard and type of argon 99.999% is recommended for the
analysis of traces. A regulated outlet adjustable up to 6 bars for a maximum flow rate of 25 L/min
must be provided (we recommend the Air Liquide HBS 315/8 or equivalent, see Photo 5) with a
union for the connection of the 2.50 m white Teflon pipe (external diameter 6 mm, inside diameter
4 mm) supplied with the instrument (see Photo 6). The instrument input pressure must not exceed
6 bars (90 psi), it must be limited by convenient means.
The gas distribution system must ensure a continuous supply of argon.
The consumption of the plasma torch when it is operating is approximately 13 L/min.

2.2.3 Nitrogen

Nitrogen is essential for UV analysis by purging the monochromator and highly recommended for
prolonging the life of the optical system.
For Ultima Expert
- for  > 130 nm, 4L/min, purity of 99.9995%
- for  > 178 nm, 3L/min, purity of 99.999%
- for  > 200 nm, for prolonging the life of the optics, 0.5 L/min, purity of 99.999%
For Ultima Expert with 0.5m or 1m polychromator
- for  > 130 nm, 6L/min, purity of 99.9995%
- for  > 178 nm, 5L/min, purity of 99.999%
- for  > 200 nm, for prolonging the life of the optics, 2.5 L/min, purity of 99.999%
For Nitrogen, a black tube of PRS (Polyolefin Reticulate Silane) is used for the connection to the
spectrometer. The outlet and the connections must be identical to those used for argon, but an iso-
lation valve and a drain valve are also required for cylinder replacement. Connection to the spec-
trometer is performed in the same manner as for argon.
We recommend that the flow rate be maintained 24 h/day so that the instrument is ready for imme-
diate use regardless of the period of time since the last analysis.
03/25/2014

Notice: It is mandatory that the spectrometer input pressure should is limited to 2 bars (30 psi),
with convenient means (pressure reducer) to prevent damaging the spectrometer.
During installation, a flowrate of 3 to 10 L/min is required to purge the spectrometer.

ICP Pre-installation Manual 18

2.2.4 Cooling water

Water lines should be located away from electrical connections. Condensation and possible leaks can
create problems.

Open cooling circuit

It is not recommended to use an open cooling circuit, in order to reduce water consump-
tion (which is in the range 2 to 3 L/min.). Anyway, if an open circuit is used, the spectrom-
eter input pressure must be limited to 2 bars with a water pressure reducing valve.

Closed cooling circuit (optional)

Please refer to the manual of your system.
The GenCo system, delivered by HORIBA Scientific, should not be farthest than 4 m
from the instrument.

2.3 Exhaust
Exhaust for exhaust gases and a part of the generator heat. During operation it is essential to vent
the heat and the plasma exhaust gases in order to prevent the release of toxic or corrosive materials
in the laboratory. We recommend the use of smooth pipes with minimum elbow on the extraction
line, metal tubes, resisting up to at least 100°C.
Only one extraction of 250 m3/h (150 cfm), measured at the instrument exit, with adjustable valve,
is necessary (Optimum observed extraction flow: 100-110 m3/h). The duct connection to the spec-
trometer exhaust must be sealed. An adjustable valve will enable to reduce the exhaust flow in order
to get no plasma disturbance. This adjustment will be done by the installation engineer. The extrac-
tors should be at a sufficient distance from the plasma to ensure the gas cooling and to avoid its
deterioration by corrosive heat.

2.4 Air conditioning

To maintain the excellent level of performance of HORIBA Scientific instruments it is recom-
mended that the laboratory temperature be maintained within the range 18°C to 24°C with varia-
tions of ± 2°C maximum around the nominal value. Greater variations (± 5°C) can be accepted
provided that the instrument is calibrated more often.
The heat dissipated by the instrument is approximately 2500 kcal/h.
If you intend to install air-conditioning, check that it does not cause sudden variations in tempera-
ture.
03/25/2014

A variation of 2°C per hour is within the range mentioned above is reasonable.

ICP Pre-installation Manual 19

 Recommendations
Make sure that the instrument is not directly exposed to cold and strong draughts, sunlight
or any source of heat in order to avoid high and frequent temperature gradients.
We advise that air-conditioning vents should be away from the instrument so that they dif-
fuse the conditioned air over the whole ceiling.
The size of the air-conditioner must not be too small with respect to the volume of the
room: this would cause changes in temperature and pressure that would affect the perfor-
mance of the instrument.
If the operators feel hot or cold when the air-conditioner has been running for 15 minutes
check the temperature with a thermometer. If different to setting, check the air conditioner
for defective installation or operation. Check the air filter and clean it. A clogged filter will
impair the efficiency of the air conditioner.
A high temperature in the acceptable range (e.g. 24°C rather than 22°C) is preferable.

3 Contract of maintenance - Warranty

Regular preventive maintenance is recommended for prolonging the life of the instrument, reducing
down-time, plus ensuring your instrument is maintained to peak performance.
We recommend that you sign one of the contracts of maintenance proposed by our after-sales ser-
vice.
We highly recommend that you use HORIBA Scientific consumables to obtain a constant analysis
quality with your spectrometer. We decline any responsibility regarding performance when
HORIBA Scientific consumables are not used.
