Information
Place the sample changer as close as possible to the torch compartment in order to have short con-
nections, i.e. either on the instrument table or on shelf we can supply on option.
This shortens the sample clean-out and transfer time.

Prepare the following solutions to carry out your instrument control tests:
• LOW point: deionized water in 5% HNO3
• HIGH point: in 5% HNO3, 5 ppm P, 10 ppm Pb, 1 ppm Cd, 5 ppm, Al, 15 ppm K, 68.5 ppm
Cl if needed. For simultaneous spectrometer, as many multi-elements in the program at a con-
centration of 5 ppm.
The calibration samples should be chemically compatible.
We recommend PRECIS samples that we can supply (contact your local representative).
03/25/2014
For specific programs, you must provide the required calibration samples.
For organics:
Use exclusively for organic medium.
Example: lubrication oil in kerosene.
• LOW point: solvent plus base oil with the same dilution factor as for the HIGH point.
• HIGH point: as many multi-element organic solutions as strictly required to test all the ele-
ments in the program at a concentration of 5 ppm.
Take care to avoid precipitation and chemical reactions harmful to the quality of the solutions.
Our application laboratory engineers are ready to assist you in the selection of the appropriate refer-
ence calibration samples.
May we remind you that it is not part our after-sales engineers' duties to create and check your anal-
ysis programs.
On request, our application laboratory chemists are ready to assist you, after assessment of the prob-
lems to be resolved, on a preferential scale of fees.
Warning!
The instrument weighs more than 190 kg (420 lbs). To avoid injury to personnel or damage
to the instrument, always use a forklift.
First, place the instrument and its pallet on the bench. Then use the forklift to slightly lift
03/25/2014
the instrument (having made sure to protect the part of the instrument which will receive
the forks with cardboard or other material) to remove the palette by hand. Finally, slowly
lower the forklift to place the instrument on the bench.
1.6 Storage
The temperature of the room where the instrument is stored must be between 5°C and 40°C. The
maximum relative humidity is 90%.

2.1.1 Characteristics
Line power required: 230 V (± 10%) with earth, frequency 50 or 60Hz. Installation category: 2.
If the voltage of your laboratory is out of the defined range, or if the installation has micro-interrup-
tions which out-ranged the regulation EN 61326 regulations (half-cycle impaired) then we advise the
use of a power regulator.
We recommend an on line UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) of at least 5 kVA for the instrument
itself or 7 kVA for the ICP with accessories such as the nitrogen generator. We recommend an UPS
of 7 kVA. You may have to adapt the reaction speed of this regulation system to the reaction of our
equipment. HORIBA Scientific can provide an adapted UPS.

The gas cylinders must be handled with special care. Store them upright and attach them with metal
chains. If possible, store them outside the laboratory. Avoid the presence of heat higher than 50°C.
2.2.2 Argon
Type of argon 99.995% can be used in standard and type of argon 99.999% is recommended for the
analysis of traces. A regulated outlet adjustable up to 6 bars for a maximum flow rate of 25 L/min
must be provided (we recommend the Air Liquide HBS 315/8 or equivalent, see Photo 5) with a
union for the connection of the 2.50 m white Teflon pipe (external diameter 6 mm, inside diameter
4 mm) supplied with the instrument (see Photo 6). The instrument input pressure must not exceed
6 bars (90 psi), it must be limited by convenient means.
The gas distribution system must ensure a continuous supply of argon.
The consumption of the plasma torch when it is operating is approximately 13 L/min.
2.2.3 Nitrogen
Nitrogen is essential for UV analysis by purging the monochromator and highly recommended for
prolonging the life of the optical system.
For Ultima Expert
- for > 130 nm, 4L/min, purity of 99.9995%
- for > 178 nm, 3L/min, purity of 99.999%
- for > 200 nm, for prolonging the life of the optics, 0.5 L/min, purity of 99.999%
For Ultima Expert with 0.5m or 1m polychromator
- for > 130 nm, 6L/min, purity of 99.9995%
- for > 178 nm, 5L/min, purity of 99.999%
- for > 200 nm, for prolonging the life of the optics, 2.5 L/min, purity of 99.999%
For Nitrogen, a black tube of PRS (Polyolefin Reticulate Silane) is used for the connection to the
spectrometer. The outlet and the connections must be identical to those used for argon, but an iso-
lation valve and a drain valve are also required for cylinder replacement. Connection to the spec-
trometer is performed in the same manner as for argon.
We recommend that the flow rate be maintained 24 h/day so that the instrument is ready for imme-
diate use regardless of the period of time since the last analysis.
03/25/2014
Notice: It is mandatory that the spectrometer input pressure should is limited to 2 bars (30 psi),
with convenient means (pressure reducer) to prevent damaging the spectrometer.
During installation, a flowrate of 3 to 10 L/min is required to purge the spectrometer.
Water lines should be located away from electrical connections. Condensation and possible leaks can
create problems.
2.3 Exhaust
Exhaust for exhaust gases and a part of the generator heat. During operation it is essential to vent
the heat and the plasma exhaust gases in order to prevent the release of toxic or corrosive materials
in the laboratory. We recommend the use of smooth pipes with minimum elbow on the extraction
line, metal tubes, resisting up to at least 100°C.
Only one extraction of 250 m3/h (150 cfm), measured at the instrument exit, with adjustable valve,
is necessary (Optimum observed extraction flow: 100-110 m3/h). The duct connection to the spec-
trometer exhaust must be sealed. An adjustable valve will enable to reduce the exhaust flow in order
to get no plasma disturbance. This adjustment will be done by the installation engineer. The extrac-
tors should be at a sufficient distance from the plasma to ensure the gas cooling and to avoid its
deterioration by corrosive heat.
A variation of 2°C per hour is within the range mentioned above is reasonable.
Regular preventive maintenance is recommended for prolonging the life of the instrument, reducing
down-time, plus ensuring your instrument is maintained to peak performance.
We recommend that you sign one of the contracts of maintenance proposed by our after-sales ser-
vice.
We highly recommend that you use HORIBA Scientific consumables to obtain a constant analysis
quality with your spectrometer. We decline any responsibility regarding performance when
HORIBA Scientific consumables are not used.
