INLEIDING
Een van de grootste verschillen tussen hedendaagse theologie en theologie rond het begin van
onze jaartelling is de manier van exegese en wat men daarin normaal acht.1 Even fascinerend
is het feit dat schrijvers toen probleemloos een andere versie of vertaling van het origineel
citeerden, terwijl we nu alleen nog origineel betrouwbaar achten. Deze paper zal ingaan op een
tekst waarin deze typische manier van citeren voorkomt: Jakobus’ citaat van Amos 9,11-12
tijdens zijn toespraak op het apostelconvent (Handelingen 15), en in het bijzonder vers 12. De
verschillen tussen de MT en LXX zijn groot en in deze paper zal ik achtereenvolgens bekijken
of (1) Jakobus’ citaat allusies heeft naar andere profeten; (2) of de verschillen tussen de MT en
de LXX te verklaren zijn door een mislezing, een andere vorlage of een theologisch gemoti-
veerde verandering van de LXX ten opzichte van de MT. Tot slot (3) welke versie Jakobus
aanhaalt en hoe dit te waarderen valt.

TO ALLUDE, OR NOT TO ALLUDE, THAT’S THE QUESTION
Zijn er allusies in Jakobus’ citaat? Nägele, die haar dissertatie hierover schreef,2 ziet geen al-
lusie naar andere profeten. Zo is de allusie naar Jesaja 45 niet plausibel, omdat het woordelijk
niet overeenkomt.3 Ook het μετὰ ταῦτα ἀναστρέψω als allusie naar Jer. 12,15 is geen allusie,
maar gezera sjawa; ἀνοικοδομήσω als toespeling naar Zach. 1,16 vindt ze eveneens niet over-
tuigend. Toch zien alle commentatoren wél allusies naar andere profeten. 45 Richard Bauckham
laat overtuigend zien hoe er meerdere lijnen naar de profeten Jesaja, Jeremia en Zacharia zijn.6
Hij meent dat ἀναστρέψω even adequaat als ἐπιστρέψω het woord ׁשובin Jer. 12,15 vertaalt,
maar vertaald is voor de fonetisch overeenkomst met ἀνοικοδομήσω en ἀνορθώσω.7 Wat be-
treft het niet overeenkomen van ποιῶν ταῦτα γνωστὰ ἀπʼ αἰῶνος in Jes. 45 merkt Bauckham
op dat niet de LXX, maar de Hebreeuwse tekst is gebruikt door Jakobus waardoor het He-
breeuws wel overeenkomt.8 Overige verschillen zijn goed te verklaren als redactionele veran-
deringen of een ander Griekse tekst.9 De enkele verschillen tussen de LXX en Jakobus’ citaat10

(1) In 17a heeft Lucas ἄν ingevoegd tussen ὅπως en de aanvoegende wijs ἐκζητήσωσιν. (2) Na het woord
ἀνθρώπων heeft hij het accusatief object τὸν κύριον toegevoegd. (3) Hij laat het lidwoord ὁ weg voor van ποιῶν.
Twee van deze varianten komen voor in een aantal manuscripten van de Septuagint, waaronder de Codex

wijzen op een LXX versie dichtbij de Alexandrijnse traditie.11 In ieder geval is het zeer aanne-
melijk gemaakt dat Jakobus’ citaat hier allusies heeft naar meerdere profeten.
Een tweede optie is dat de LXX teruggaat op een Hebreeuwse vorlage die verschilt van de
MT.16 De vorlage (waarbij de bovenstaande ‘mislezingen’ behoren tot de vorlage) ziet er als
volgt uit: אֹ תֹו אָ דָ ם וְ כָל־הַ ּגֹוים לְ מַ עַן י ְד ְרׁשּו. Dit wordt betoogd door Jones, waarbij zijn argumentatie
steunt op de LXX-volgorde als originele volgorde.17 In de MT volgt Obadja met zijn profetie
tegen Edom op het boek Amos. Omdat het verbum ירׁשvijf keer voorkomt in Obadja, zijn אדם
en דרׁשveranderd voor een goede aansluiting. In de LXX staat Amos voor Micha en is er geen
aansluiting nodig met het verbum ירׁש.
Alexandrinus. Alleen het weglaten van het lidwoord ὁ voor van ποιῶν wordt niet bevestigd door de Septuagint
handschriftentraditie.

Jobes doet deze optie af als tekstuele emandatie, omdat er geen manuscript gevonden is met de
vorlage.18 Echter, er zijn breed aangehangen theorieën die eveneens rusten op onontdekte bron-
nen (zoals bron Q19). Deze optie is dus niet onwaarschijnlijk (zelfs het meest logisch mocht de
originele volgorde van de Kleine Profeten zeker zijn), maar wordt door de onzekerheid rondom
de volgorde niet breed aangehangen.20
Een derde optie is dat de LXX en MT dezelfde vorlage hebben, maar dat de vertaler dingen
gewijzigd heeft vanuit bepaalde overwegingen. In Amos 5,14-15 gaat het over een ‘rest van
Jozef’ (וסף
ִֽ ֵ ֹ ) ְׁשאֵ ִ֥רית יdie door goed te doen en God te zoeken ( )דרׁשbewaard blijft. De terugke-
rende combinatie van דרׁשmet ְׁשאֵ ִ֥ריתbreidt de ‘rest’ uit tot alle volken en wordt dus universeler
gemaakt. Ook sluit de tekst zo beter aan bij de Sukkoth-traditie, waarbij volken van alle landen
naar Jeruzalem komen om te feestvieren en God te loven.21 Daarnaast is de Hebreeuwse tekst
te nationalistisch van aard: een eschatologische weergave van de reactie van de heidenen op
Israëls God is gepaster.22 Deze optie lijkt momenteel door de meeste commentatoren te worden
aangehangen.23
Van de drie opties is de tweede wat mij betreft het waarschijnlijkst. Allereerst omdat het be-
zwaar van het onontdekte manuscript gezien het beperkt aantal manuscripten niet sterk is. Ten
tweede is de eerste optie, gelet op de overleveringsgeschiedenis van de LXX, ongeloofwaardig.
Ten derde zijn de aanpassingen van de derde optie dermate grondig, dat het inconsistent is dit
alleen hier toe te passen. Daarnaast zijn de motieven voor deze verandering niet minder hypo-
thetisch dan het bestaan van een aparte Hebreeuwse vorlage.

WELKE VERSIE GEBRUIKT JAKOBUS?
Een van de MT verschillende Hebreeuwse vorlage is de waarschijnlijkste verklaring voor de
LXX. Maar welke versie gebruikte Jakobus op het apostelconvent? Qua voertaal is Grieks het
aannemelijkst, aangezien er Griekssprekenden Antiochiërs waren.24 Sommigen (waaronder
Barrett) menen dat Lucas dit citaat Jakobus in de mond legt als schriftbewijs voor de zending
naar de heidenen.25 Jakobus zou dan het Hebreeuws aangehaald hebben, maar Lucas de LXX.26
Bauckham verwerpt echter Barrets these en laat uitgebreid zien hoe Jakobus – waarvan niet
onwaarschijnlijk is dat hij Grieks kende27 – het exegetische potentieel van de LXX benut.28
Joodse exegeten waren gewend bij verschillende lezingen degene te kiezen die hun interpreta-
tie ondersteunde. Jakobus heeft gebruik gemaakt van de Hebreeuwse tekst bij zijn exegese –
het grotere geheel waarin het apostolisch besluit in vers 28-29 valt, maakt dit duidelijk.29 Wel
haalt de LXX aan conform Joodse midrasj en doet hij wat zijn tijd betreft verantwoorde bijbel-
uitleg.30
CONCLUSIE
Jakobus’ citaat van Amos 9,11-12 in Handelingen 15 heeft verschillende allusies naar Jesaja,
Jeremia en Zacharia. Van de verschillende verklaringen voor de verschillen tussen de MT en
de LXX (een ‘al tiqre, andere vorlage of theologische aanpassing) is een verschillende He-
breeuwse vorlage de meest waarschijnlijke optie. Jakobus haalt in zijn toespraak de LXX aan,
maar gebruikt, gezien het grotere geheel van zijn verhaal, voor zijn exegese de Hebreeuwse
tekst. Voor Jakobus was het hanteren van twee verschillende versies naast elkaar geen pro-
bleem, maar een verantwoorde manier van exegese die zijn missionaire punt op het apostel-
convent kracht bijzet.
