INTERNAL RESISTANCE
International resistance is defined as the resistance
offered by the electrolyte of the cell to the flow of ions.
What are
Factors on which e.m.f of a cell depends : (i) nature of
electrodes (ii) concentration of electrolyte (iii) temperature
of the cell (iv) area of electrode immersed in electrolyte (v)
nature of electrolyte.

THEORY
The internal resistance of a cell is the resistance offered
by its electrolyte to the flow of ions. The internal resistance
of a cell
Internal resistance:
The resistance offered by the electrolyte inside the cell to
the flow of current is called the internal resistance of the
cell (r).
where is the maximum current that can be
drawn from the e cell.
Factors affecting internal resistance
The internal resistance of a cell depends on:
Surface area of electrodes (more surface area → less
resistance)
Distance between the electrodes (more distance → more
resistance)
Nature and concentration of electrolyte (higher
concentration → more resistance)
Temperature of electrolyte (more temperature → more
resistance)
PROCEDURE
Clean the ends of the connecting wires with sand
Check the e.m.f. of the battery and of the cell and
make sure that e.m.f. of the battery is more than that
of the cell, otherwise null or balance point will not be
obtained.
To study variation of internal resistance with distance
of separation
