ISE I – ASSESSMENT AND MARKING

Reading

There are 30 questions in the reading section. Depending on the number of correct answers,
the reading result will be Distinction, Merit, Pass or Fail.

Writing

The four criteria being assessed are:

- Task fulfilment: how well the question is answered

- Organisation and structure: how well the writing is organised, use of paragraphs and
sentences, organisation of ideas and arguments.
- Language control: the range and accuracy of vocabulary and how well punctuation and
spelling are used.
- Reading for writing (task 3 only): how well the reading texts have been used to write
an answer to a question in Task 3.

For the writing tasks, the scores in the four criteria are combined and the Writing result will be
Distinction, Merit, Pass or Fail.

If students pass both the reading and writing tasks, they will pass the Reading and Writing
exam.

Time Limit

The Reading & Writing exam is two hours long. Students should aim to spend:

- 20 minutes on Task 1
- 20 minutes on Task 2
- 40 minutes on Task 3
- 40 minutes on Task 4
