TASK 5 - QUESTION
A liquid mixture of 25 mole% n-pentane, 45 mole% n-hexane and 30 mole% n-heptane,
initially at 69 C and high pressure, is partially vapourised by isothermally lowering the pressure
to 1 atm.

Find the relative amounts of vapour and liquid and their compositions.

STEPS
1. A new simulation window is created on Aspen HYSYS.
2. n-pentane, n-hexane and n-heptane is added from the Components List.
3. Peng-Robinson EOS is selected from Fluid Packages
4. The Simulation window is opened.
5. A Feed stream is created, and the given compositions are entered in
6. The stream is double clicked which opens the properties tab.
7. Temperature is entered as given in the problem at 69°C, under the Conditions tab. The
mass flowrate is assumed to be 100kg/h.
8. Two outlet streams are created, one for vapour and the other for liquid.
9. In the vapour outlet stream pressure is selected as 1 atm, and 69°C (isothermally) as
given in the problem.
10. A Separator is drag and dropped to the window. On double clicking the Separator, the
Connections tab of the Separator opens. From there the inlet, outlets are selected
accordingly.
11. From the inlet stream vapour fraction is noted down.
12. From the compositions tab under worksheet of the separator, the compositions in feed,
liquid and vapour stream are noted down.

TASK 7 - QUESTION
Waters enters a 5000 ft. long 6 in diameter schedule 40 commercial steel pipe at 60°F and 150
psig and discharges to an open tank located 300 ft. above the inlet point.

Calculate the discharge water flow rate. Assume no heat loss from the pipe.
Also, make a plot of water flow rate vs pressure drop (100-200 psi)

STEPS
1. A new simulation window is created on Unisim.
2. Add water from the components list.
3. ASME Steam is selected from Fluid Packages
4. The Simulation window is opened.
5. Drag a pipe segment from the object pallet.
6. Specify the inlet, outlet and energy stream.
7. Click on rating tab and specify the pipe length, elevation chance and nominal pipe
diameter.
8. Specify the inlet temperature as 60°F and pressure as 150 psig
9. The discharge flow rate is noted.
10. To make the plot go to tools and then databook.
11. Insert these two components as shown below.

12. Navigate to case studies, add case study 1, add, check Ind for pressure drop and Dep
for Comp Volume Flow (H2O).

8
13. Click on View and specify Low Bound and High Bound and Step size.
