Learning assignment 4:
Steam and electricity consumptions
Submission latest on February 12 by 23.59

An integrated pulp and paper mill produces two paper grades (SC paper, LWC paper) and
pulp at the mill site. The mill consumes both MP steam (Middle pressure steam) and BP
steam (Back pressure steam). Table 1 shows summary of flow rates needed to define the heat
consumption of the mill.

Table 1. Summary of material flow rates

Pine input, debarking 6387 k-m3/d
Cooking, pulp out 1132 ADT/d
O-stage, pulp out 1098 ADT/d
Bleaching, pulp out 1043 ADT/d
Bleached pulp, TMP out 942 ADT/d
Evaporation of black liquor 7540 t/d
Tall oil production 31 t/d
White liquor demand 2928 m3/d
Pulp production, selling 613 ADT/d
LWC paper machine, gross production 886 t/d
LWC coating machine, gross production 1072 t/d
SC paper machine, gross production 807 t/d
Mass flow rate of black liquor 1711 tds/d
Mass flow rate of bark and wood
rejection 345 tds/d

A) MP and BP steam consumptions

Table 2 and 3 show steam consumptions of the pulp and paper mill in winter, respectively.

Table 2. Steam consumptions and condensate return at the pulp mill in winter

Recausticizing m (white liquor) 24 95
Drying machine ADT (dried pulp) 1590 95
ADT = Air Dry Ton, dry solids content of the product is 90%
BP = Back pressure steam, MP = Middle pressure steam

Other initial data

MP steam: pressure 11 bar (abs.), temperature 254oC

BP steam: pressure 4 bar (abs.), temperature 166oC
Make-up water: pressure 4 bar (abs.), temperature 40oC
Condensate from the mill: pressure 1 bar (abs.), temperature 90oC

Calculate how much MP and BP steams are needed at the pulp mill in winter in units kg/s and
MW.

Calculate how much MP and BP steams are needed at the paper mill in winter in units kg/s
and MW.

Calculate what is the total demand of MP and BP steams at the mill in MW.

Remember to compensate steam losses at the mill by make-up water when you calculate
steam consumptions in MW.

B) Electricity consumption

Tables 4 and 5 show electricity consumptions of the pulp and paper mill in winter, respectively.
