If you can, try not to borrow the books. Although of course you are totally entitled to just make
sure to return the book once you are done with it. These are expensive books that are needed
for the future generation as well!!

You can not eat or drink in the library (however a bottle of water is allowed)

The library has very useful online resources for anatomy! You can see the human body in 3D
and even hear the pronunciation of different parts of the body. Access it via the main library
webpage (https://lib.semmelweis.hu/nav/english) and you’ll even find even more databases on
there. However, non-scientific papers are not accepted

Language studies.
Hungarian is OBLIGATORY!!!! If you miss classes, you delay your graduation. In your first sem,
you will learn medical Latin, and in sem 2 you’ll learn terminology. Everyone who studies for 4
years will learn Hungarian throughout. Public health until sem 5. Midwifery (those for 2 years)
need to register for 6 sems but you will get more details soon.

Midwifery has obligatory electives that others can take as well. Such as thesis one (although for
the others it’s recommended to take it during the last year). You can also study French, German,
Spanish, Italian, and/or Russian for 2 sems as an elective or you can have any private language
classes if you reach out to the department.

To prepare for next week, for Hungarian buy the book ‘Jo reggelt’ (You can find it at Gerbczy
utca). You will have oral and written tests for it.

For medical Latin, you will get a PDF coursebook.

BOTH HAVE COMPULSORY ATTENDANCE!!!!!!

○ Punctuality is essential, if you are late you will not be let in
● You also have the option of going to the gym instead of P.E. For the signature you need

reason you can’t make sure you show up to the class next week (week 3) so that they

Professional ethics

3 parts that are obligatory:

1. Oath taken during opening ceremony.
2. One lesson on professional ethics (this is done during the intro to higher education, you
can make up for it next year.)
3. Oath to be taken during the closing ceremony.
Altruism: Promoting someone else’s welfare with disregard for your own.

Four basic principles in medical ethics

1. Don’t hurt anyone (nonmalefience)
2. Charity (beneficence)
3. Autonomy (self-determination)
4. Justice (Equity)

Profession = activity + identity + commitment

Professional order: people with the same way of life/value systems
Exclusivity: It is very complicated to get into certain professional orders
The order: way of life, based on the conventions + specific educational styles and prestige.
