Lesson Idea Name: Inherited and Acquired Traits

Grade Level/Content Area: 2nd grade Science
Content Standard Addressed: S2L1: Obtain, Evaluate, and communicate information about the life
cycles of different organisms
ISTE Technology Standard What would you like students to know and
Addressed: (ISTE Student Standards be able to do by the end of this lesson:

meeting desired objectives of their creation at the end of this lesson to be able to
and communication. evaluate the different life cycles of each
organism.
What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?
Students will understand, evaluate, inform, and show characteristics of the life cycle.
Selected Basic Productivity Tool: PowerPoint

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply

X Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

I will introduce this tool by introducing the topic at hand first. I would talk to the students
about what a life cycle is. After going through the differences and examples I would ask them
to explain what I taught them back to me. Once we all talked about what they know about
the different traits and the examples of them I would introduce the audiobook. I plan on

students after listening to the audiobook getting into groups of 2-4 and make a PowerPoint
off what they learned about the audiobook. I would make students aware of their goals by
writing I can statement on the board. Which would go over the expectation at the end of the
lesson that students are expected to know the difference between different life cycles.
Students will utilize the technology by using the audiobook I made as a resource for
knowledge and as an example of a project I would like them to create. The teacher will teach
the first part of the lesson, then walk around and see if students are on track with what I
asked them to do and help any student that needs it. Feedback will be provided to the
students throughout the teacher consistently checking the groups work and while they
present their PowerPoint to the entire class. I would conclude the lesson by talking about
how they can use the audiobook I made and the PowerPoints they made in the future while
talking about this topic and diving into further topics since we will be using something similar
in the future. I will also remind the students if they did not finish, we can work on it
throughout the week, and they will always have access to the audiobook.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:
This technology will get students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts by
making them plan out their projects before they put it in the PowerPoint, I am assigning
them in their groups of 2-4. This means students would have about 10-20 minutes to sit
with their groups to write out a plan before hoping onto the computer after watching the
audiobook. Before hopping back on the computers, I would remind students of the learning
goals and spend 5 minutes with each group having them tell me what they have come up
with. After reminding the groups about the goals and going and checking up on all the
students I would have them spend the reminder of the class time we have working on their
presentations. As they are working on the presentations I would go around and remind
them some more of the learning goals they must meet during this project and make sure
they are all doing okay. I would also make group members assign tasks to each other so
they can also all keep each other on track. This would be a co-engagement, because
students are engaged with writing out their plan and then going onto the PowerPoint they
are creating and using the information they came up with the preplanning they have done
on a sheet of paper. I will manage behaviors on technology by closely monitoring what the
students are doing on their computer. If students are getting off task, I would redirect them
to what we are working on and if they get frustrated or upset have them take a break and
then come back.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The technology I choose supports all students by having multiple different associability tools
like closed caption or immersive text. The activities I choose and the technology tools I
choose for the classroom enhance the learning experience for students by giving students an
action and expression. These students have a way of showing what they know and a form of
where they can express it to everyone what they learned. PowerPoints do not come with
videos or games that help students keep track and making sure that they are truly
understanding the information. Students get to come up with their own content and that
allows them to express themselves to myself as the teacher and the class.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

The activities I creates, I feel like student learning will thrive because they have something to
engage in and help them learn at their own pace. What part of the lesson do you look
forward to implementing with students? I look forward to implementing the audiobook to
the students. I look forward to implementing the audiobook to the students because I want
to see students learn the way they do best and be able to understand the content themselves
rather than relying on me to always must be the one they lean on to understand content.
