PRACTICAL DISCIPLESHIP
“Herein is my father glorified,
Handbook
that ye bear much fruits; so
shall ye be my disciples”
(John 15:8).

Joshua Ishaya Mamza

Edited by Rev. Pro. Bauta Motty
Overview
Looking at the life and ministry of Jesus, we see discipleship more in His work. He called
people of diverse professions to follow Him (See John 1:35-40; Matt. 4:18-22). He lived with
them, trained and commissioned them to make disciples of other peoples and nations even to
this present day.
Discipleship, in reality, forms the foundation of Jesus’ Church because without it the Church
cannot survive persecution, temptation and tribulation. Hence, discipleship is not just a topic
of discussion, but it is also a foundational truth embedded in the Bible. Thus, the goal of this
course is not only to lead you through a theoretical study of discipleship, rather, it is to help
you personally grow in your walk with Jesus Christ. This means that you learn and practice the
principles that Jesus taught his disciples, and crucially important, that you help others become
devoted disciples of Jesus Christ.
“The greatest injustice the Church can ever do to the world is to refuse to tell the world God’s
plan of Salvation.”1
This is a guide book for practical discipleship for SALT Nigeria. Our intentions are: Bringing
the word of God in context in practical, and sustainable developmental program in Nigeria. As
a Non-Governmental organization, SALT Nigeria is making a difference in the lives of many
individuals with quality teaching on poverty alleviation and sound Biblical and moral ways of
living. SALT Nigeria also does evangelism, Living Hope Vocational School and youth
programs.
All the Biblical quotations are from KJV, unless specified.

CHAPTER ONE
DISCIPLESHIP MEANING AND WHO IS A DISCIPLE.
And he saith unto them, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
Matthew 4:19

Figure 1.0

Follow Jesus together as we held hands.

What do we mean when we talk about discipleship? The Greek word “μαθητής” ‘mathétés’
(math-ay-tes'), means pupil or student. It is a word frequently used in the New Testament
and it describes a conscious decision to follow a teacher or a group. Basically, in ancient
times, a disciple was like an apprentice. They were being taught the trade, lived with the
family of the teacher, and even went to worship services with them.
A disciple is one who has placed faith in Christ Jesus, follows and identifies himself daily with
other believers. Jesus Christ is enough for him and Bible answers every question in all aspects
of his life. This person is not a split-level Christian, or syncretic person (Luke 14:25-27, Matt
16:24, John 13:34-35, John 15:8). 2
Discipline involves providing a helpful relationship for others to grow in Christ, while
Discipleship is a life- long intentional process of learning and practice of the word of God. It

requires a process

which transforms a person’s values and behavior, and results in ministry in one’s home, church,
and the world.3
• True discipleship is about a lifestyle, not simply about storing up Bible knowledge and is a
contagious life Let your life affect others. Discipleship is about being and reproducing a
passionate disciple for Christ, coaching others to be like Christ, to start reproduction
themselves. Discipleship, in other words, is about passionately pursuing the lifestyle and
mission of Jesus Christ.
• Discipleship is the expression of the Lord Jesus in one’s life. It refers to the process of
sanctification and continual spiritual transformation until we achieve the crown of life awaiting
us in heaven.
Bing a disciple is about a transmissible life that draws others to Christ, and or, a person that
point others to Christ and follow himself just as apostle Paul says “Follow my example as I
follow the examples of Christ” (1 Cor. 11:1). This is the same with the master and his disciple.
(discipler and his disciple).

4
By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.
(John 15:8)
Calling: Jesus called out or chose his disciples and disclosed to them the cost and goal of
following him. And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose
twelve, whom also he named
apostles (Luke 6:13). Jesus,
knowing the value of
impacting few and then
those will keep growing, did
pick twelve. Many people
want to carry everybody
alongside or disciple
thousands at once. But to be
very effective, pick few and

them until they are fully
equipped. Then, pick
another different set and
continue until you are called to glory.
His Teaching If any man come to me, and hates not his father, and mother, and wife, and
children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. (Luke
14:26.) “In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my
disciple” NIV (Luke 14:33)
He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or
daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth
after me, is not worthy of me. He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for
my sake shall find it. (Matthew 10:37-39) In these verses, Jesus emphasizes the love for things
that may hinder people from serving him whole-heartedly. It is not possible to follow Christ
with love for materialism.
His Commission to His Disciples
Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the father and of
the son and of the Holy Spirit NIV (Matthew 28:19)
This is the first responsibility of every Christian, to “Make disciples of all nation” It is good to
understand that every Christian is answerable to this call. Jesus’ disciples did not hesitate to
receive and obey this call. And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working
with them, and confirming the word with sighs following. Amen (Mark 16:20)
John 8:31 “…If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;” it is required of a
disciple to hold unto the teachings of Jesus in every day of their lives and in every area of their
activities. Not only in the church or related activities rather, in every aspect of life. 1 Thess. 4:1
says, “Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as
ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and
more.”
Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready
to every good work, (Titus 3:1) Read also (2 Peter 3:1)

5
Lastly, after following Christ and obeying his word daily in every aspect of our lives, then we
bear much fruits “Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my
disciples.” (John 15:8)
b. Importance of Discipleship
Then Peter began to say into him, lo, we have left all, and have followed thee. And Jesus
answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren,
or sister, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s,
But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and
mothers, and children, and lands with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life
(Mark 10: 28-30)
The benefits of discipleship are numerous. It is good to know that all the good works we do
in the name of Christ, we equally do it for Christ and he will repay us back. “….For with the
same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.” (Luke 6:38).
Below are some few benefits of discipleship:
➢ Connects facilitators and clients,
➢ Gives facilitators a biblical concept of discipleship,
➢ Help us to understand the need for discipleship in the society
➢ Calling the church universal to embark on Christ-centered and biblical model for doing
discipleship that will strengthen the Christian faith amidst this devastating world.
➢ Obeying the Great Commission of Matthew 28:18-20
➢ Helps clients to know that God is interested in all human activities. (Business, working
places, farming travelling and every other aspect of human life) therefore, helps them
live Holy lives not only on Sunday and in Church.
➢ Helps with a solid foundation of Christianity.
➢ Helps with the Spiritual growth and deeper understanding of Biblical truth in the lives
of the clients.
➢ It gives understanding on the principal of intimate relationship with God.
➢ It helps in developing a good relationship with the clients.
➢ Gives quick understanding of the program.
➢ Creates Trust: Many people are dying inwardly because they lack someone they can
trust to share their challenges with. Therefore, discipleship can create a trust between
facilitators and clients until they feel okay to share their challenges and pray together.
➢ Builds humility.
➢ Creates Accountability.
➢ Unites us with fellow believers: The body of Christ isn’t meant to simply exist for us
to gather together on Sundays and then move along with our lives the rest of the
week. God’s word paints a picture of believers doing life together Acts 2:44-47.
Seeking counsel
➢ Is one way to invite others into your life. Most of the time people won’t know the
details of your life unless you are willing to allow them come closer to you.
➢ Being willing to be held accountable by others provides an opportunity for prayer and
mutual encouragement (Gal. 6:2; 1 Thess. 5:11). We want to pursue relationship with
each other because we are members of His body Ephesians 5: 30.
➢ Equips us for faithfulness. Titus 2:3 teaches that the older women in the church
should teach what is good and train the younger women. They are to equip other

6
women in how-to walk-in step with the truth of the gospel. And this isn’t a
suggestion, it is God’s instruction for how we should relate to one another.
➢ Grows the Church healthier and stronger.
➢ Is a solid foundation to Christians that help be strong at the beginning. This way they
can be like Mount Zion that can never be shaken, (Psalms 127:1). in fact, a church or
organization without a solid discipleship is like a fancy building without good
foundation.

CHAPTER TWO

7
QUALITIES OF DISCIPLE
a. RAYER/INTERCESSOR.
Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching
thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; (Eph. 6:18)

It is good to start with prayer. As we

always say, “Prayer is the key, Jesus
started with prayer and ended with
prayer. This alone is 60% of
discipleship making process.
A disciple maker is a person of prayer
without ceasing. Thanksgiving,
praises, intercession, petition and
confession are always part of his life,
knowing that God is gracious to us all
the time.
I remember an occasion that happened
some years ago, when I was helpless. I
Figure 2.0: prayer should be a way of life to a disciple
was a displaced person in Kano in the
year 2014 by the Boko Haram
insurgence.
I thought that God was not good to me because I have not enough food to eat, no good place
to sleep, and no enough clothes to put on. So, I was quite in solitude but was asking God many
“why” questions in my heart. (Why me oh God? what have I done to deserve these treatments?
why oh, good God, will you allow such a thing happen to me? And many more) as I was in the
middle of these questions, a small nice calm voice asked me, “How many times do you take a
breath in a minute?” Without hesitation, I picked my phone and called a brother of mine who
is medical nurse, then I asked him the same question. The answer I received was about 18-20
times a normal human being breaths in and out oxygen every minute. By the time I multiplied
those numbers by hours, days, and months for a year, I ended up having 9,460,800 breaths in
a year. Then that voice still asked me in a gentle voice again, “What about if you have to pay
just one Naira for each of the breath you are taking in and out all the time? Would you be able
to afford 9.4 Million Naira every year to be spent just on breath to survive?” My eyes was filled
up with tears and I felt on my knees and pleaded for forgiveness.
This memory always reminds me of how God’s faithfulness in many ways though, I
was not observant. We often feel like God is not answering our prayers. But that is not true,
God always! always!! Answers us. It could be, receive it now, or wait, or no this will harm you
(James 4:1-3, 1:6-8). Many of us don’t understand that we ask for things that can harm or even
destroy us. I remember, 2017 in the apartment where I was staying, the rest of the tenants loved
music so much that, all the time I was there; the house was noisy and loud. To me it was a big
problem because I wanted a noise free environment, yet my neighbors couldn’t keep their
music low. This troubled me so much that I started to pray all the time and was the content of
my prayer; “Lord please cause the electricity to go off so my ears can get some rest.” This was
my prayer for some time until it came to pass that I had forgotten I was praying that way. Then,
the light was gone for a week and at first, I was so happy, but then I discovered that I have no
ways of charging the battery of my phone and laptop (I have to pay for charging); I couldn’t
cook (I was using electric cooker), I couldn’t do my laundry (we can’t pump water) for a whole
week, I had to pay for all of those and I began to blame God again: “But why now oh God?”
The worst was on Sunday when I wanted to go to church, I shuffled through my clothes, but

8
all I could see were dirty wrinkled clothes that needed to be washed. Finally, I found one that
was washed but couldn’t put it on because they needed ironing (Nigerian clothes) but I was at
least glad ironing is an easy thing to do. While I was jubilating, it came to my memory that it’s
been a week there was no electricity. “Hmmm does God even want me to go to church?” I
asked myself. That gentle voice again answered me immediately “Have you forgotten what
you have been praying for? I thought you don’t need the electricity again?” again I broke into
tears. That taught me a great lesson that we ask often times things that we do not need at all or
for the things that might even harm us.
However, we become so mad at God thinking that he doesn’t care or love us; others
even go to the extent of questioning his love, mercy, kindness or even his existence not knowing
that he really loves us by not giving us what we asked that may harm us. “If ye then, being evil,
know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in
heaven give good things to them that ask him?”( Matthew 7:11). God will always give us good
things no matter what we ask of him. Therefore, be grateful all the time as a disciple maker,
teach your clients to be grateful for the Lord is so good whether or not we can see, but the
grateful heart sees many blessings from God.
A disciple has prayer as a lifestyle. Yes, one
misconception Christians do have is
classifying prayer under the gift of the Holy
Spirit. But in reality, prayer is not a Spiritual
gift it is rather, a way of life for every
believer. No one has more special prayer
ability or gift than other; every Christian
should take prayer seriously.
Knowing the real meaning of prayer
as “Communication” could help. Take an
example of a child with parents. As a child,
communicating with parents is the first thing
to do at all times. If the child has no request,
he must have a report. (Report of stories about
Figure 2.1
what he have seen or did or heard. Good or
bad). In the same way, we need to have that kind of accountability and give that power to God.
If you don’t have anything to ask for, that doesn’t mean you don’t have anything to tell your
father. A good child will sit close enough to his father and listen to him even when there is
nothing to ask. Therefore, if you have nothing to tell God, you can come to him in solitude and
listen to what he has to say, thanksgiving, intercession, praise or confession. But it is very
doubtful you will be without request if you are living on planet earth.
A disciple, who points others to Jesus Christ does not take prayer for granted, but prays like
his leader Jesus. We see in 29 places of the New Testament that show Jesus either praying or
interceding for people. Mark 6:46 -“After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray”
(Heb. 5:7; 7:25; Luke 3:21; 9:18; 11:1; 22:32; Matthew 14:23; 26:36, 39, 42, 44; 14:19; 19:13;
26:53; Mark 1:35; 14:32, 35, 39; John 14:16; 11:22; 17:1-25; 16:26)
Luke 6:12: “One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night
praying to God.” A disciple who is following the steps of Christ can’t be a person who loves
much sleeping and enjoyment, instead, he is a man who creates time to pray even in the midst
of hectic activities. A disciple should make prayer a habit and lifestyle. Luke 5:16 “But Jesus

9
often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” This was the habit of Jesus. Therefore, anyone
who claims to be a disciple of Christ must withdraw to a quiet place often to pray.
Most often, people ask, “How do I pray for up to an hour, is that possible?” Yes, it is possible.
Before you finish mentioning your family members, your disciples, your church, your country,
Christians all over and your personal requests, then one hour will pass by without you knowing.
In the real sense, a disciple who is a good Christian, intercedes only for people. Look at Isaiah
53:12 “……. For he bore the sins of many and made intercession for the transgressors.” Isaiah
the prophet, to whom God revealed what Jesus was coming to do, teaches us that a disciple
who intends to follow Christ while making his/her life as example for others to imitate, should
also lead a life of an intercession.
Romans 8:34: … It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at
the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us Christ has been and is always
interceding on our behalf. Therefore, a disciple also intercedes for people.
Prayer is the most important part of discipleship. Without prayers,
all we do is in vain. Just like the roots of a tree. We tend to
A Person who comment on how good or bad a particular tree looks by its leaves,
claims to be a flowers, fruits and branches but no one cares to comment about its
disciple, who roots. So also, prayer is the most neglected part of discipleship. It’s
wants to lead easy to talk about experiences, wisdom and our knowledge. That is
others to Christ, why people mostly ask questions about how to start, who to start
and does not with, what are the procedures, and what is required? A good teacher
pray is but an should always pray for the people he/she is discipling. It is easier to
irritating noise know what to say, how to say it and even how to go about every
maker. situation we encounter when we always submit our will to God.
It is through prayer that God will reveal to us what to do in
complicated situations but when we are far from the Father then we
become speechless. A child who always talks to his Father knows the mind of the father, but a
child whose communication with his Father is not strong does not know the mind of the Father.
So also, a disciple whose communication with the God is strong knows what the Father wants
in every situation. A Person who claims to be disciple and wants to lead others to Christ and
does not pray is but an irritating noise maker. It is good to know very well that, no situation is
above God. Therefore, “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thess. 5:17). This is a call for action in prayer
instead of complaining or grumbling. Daniel on hearing that all men are required to worship
the idol, he quickly went on his knees. Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he
went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled
upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did
aforetime. Daniel 6: 10.
Hold on… Daniel gave thanks? I thought he was supposed to call fire from above to consume
his enemies? Or maybe to bind his enemies? Or question God why oh God will you allow such
thing to happen to me? but he gave thanks.
Paul wrote to the church at Ephesus that they should be Praying always with all prayer and
supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for
all saints; (Ephesians 6:18). This verse speaks of two important things we need to know.
1. Pray at all times. In our office while driving, while working, while sleeping, while
singing, while doing anything. This clearly shows how a disciple has no time for envy,
lies, gossip, murder, and plans evil against no one; instead prays all the time. This

10
sounds a little bit difficult. But it’s not only difficult for a carnal man rather, it is
impossible. Yet to the man in the Spirit, it is easy. This is why it’s easy, because your
mind will be filled with the things of God: your imagination, singing, talking and all
other aspect of life will be filed with the things of God.
2. Pray for all the saints. A disciple is not a selfish person who only prays for himself,
but pray for other believers round the world. Those he can mention their names
and those he can’t are both included.

Luke 18: 1 - “And he spoke a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray,
and not to faint.” they should always pray and not to give
up. A disciple never compromises his/her standard but to keep
praying. Luke 21:36 “Watch ye therefore, and pray always, “I exhort, therefore,
that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that that, first of all,
shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.” supplications,
Romans 12:12 “……………… continuing instant in prayer;”

giving of thanks, be
As a disciple, chosen by God, we are mandated to always pray made for all men;
and intercede for relations, leaders, churches, Christians
worldwide, your work and others. “I exhort therefore, that,
first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of
thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a
quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. I will therefore that men pray everywhere,
lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.” (1 Timothy 2:1-2, 8)

Steps involved in developing your prayer life.

To make prayer a way of life or a lifestyle is not an easy task; it takes a lot of commitment.
Therefore,

✓ Have someone you can be accountable to. Like your wife, husband, close friend, pastor
or anyone you respect and trust.
✓ Have a formal prayer book and prayer list.
✓ Have a specific prayer time (Quiet times)
✓ Create a time table. This will help you stay accountable.
✓ Develop/create a passion, love and interest in prayer.
✓ Prayers and ask God to help you to be committed in prayers.

11
✓ Commit to it. You will struggle with your body (flesh) for some weeks, usually 3 to 4
weeks before it will become part of your life. Your body and the
devil will challenge your commitment. Hence James wrote that
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will

not value your

b. HUNGER FOR MULTIPLICATION

If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall
be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye
be my disciples. (John 15:7-8)

And
First Then

Christ In Christ Tell Christ

Figure 2.3
A disciple is a person who takes upon him/herself the work of saving souls. Every time is a
good time and every place is an opportunity to a disciple. A disciple is a person who is making
use of every opportunity to preach. Waiting for the best time to share Christ doesn’t necessarily
make opportunity. So, making use of every opportunity to share Christ is the best and the
wisest.

12
Many Christians do not want to share Christ because of fear, laziness, love for materialism and
others. Some are like Jonah and Moses, always on the escape and others, don’t even know this
Christ just like the seven sons of Sceva. Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took
upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We
adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. And there were seven sons of one
Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. And the evil spirit
answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? And the
man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and A disciple
prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded is a person
(Acts 19:13-16). It’s very dangerous to preach Christ without knowing him. who is
If what happened with the seven sons of Sceva did not happen to you then the making use
worst part is coming. “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we of every
not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy opportunity
name done many wonderful works?” (Matt 7:22). to preach.
It is good to know that Christ calls every Christian into the work of
discipleship and sharing. We must not all be preachers but we can minister
to people in little ways.
The Spiritual gifts are many, we each have at least one: Prophecy, serving (Ministration),
Teaching, Encouragement, Giving, Lead, Mercy, Wisdom, Knowledge, Faith, Healing,
Miraculous, Discernment, Tongues Interpretation, Apostles, Evangelist, Pastor-Teaching,

Speaking-Preaching. (Romans 12:6; 1 Cor: 12:7; Eph. 4:11; 1 Peter 4:11); identify which is
yours and make use of it in sharing Christ.
A disciple is a person who is zealous for Christ and evangelism; his wishes and desires to see
people follow Christ. A disciple-maker is also a tunnel. A drop of Christ in, more of Christ
comes out.
Many people ask question like, “But I am not Figure 2.4
a preacher, I am not a pastor, I am not a pulpit
user, how can I tell others about Christ?” It’s
simple. You must not even preach verbally;
just live a godly life. A city that is set on an
hill cannot be hid …….Let your light so shine
before men, that they may see your good
works, and glorify your Father which is in
heaven (Matt 5:14b, 16). If only Christians can
be a light and salt to the world, that is enough
to spread the gospel to the whole world. The
other thing is, a person with Christ becomes a
center for attraction for people will desire to be
like that person. But most Christians today
have lost their salt and light, these acts have
simply caused the world not to have respect for the Christian’s faith. Churches today are
copying the world, even doing things that other people of the world do not want to do.
Therefore, since the Church has nothing to offer the world, then, the world cannot respect us.
A disciple is to lead a Godly life that shines for Christ. This almost is enough to multiply the
kingdom of God.

13
A disciple has in himself a desire for more disciples see (Acts 8:4-6, 12-13).
c. INTEGRITY
“God forbid that I should justify you: till I die I will not remove mine integrity from me.”
Job 27:5

Figure 2.5: Your integrity will be tested.

A transparent life, without blame, Godly, Holy, faithful, peace, Christ-like, and righteous, is
opposite of hypocrisy it is being what you say you are.
Integrity does a lot of tremendous things to every organization and individual. This is an
important aspect of Christian life, most especially as a disciple of Christ who wants to disciple
others. There is just no way to live a contagious life for Christ without being trusted by the
people around. No one can trust a man without integrity; not even a thief nor a fool. Others
can, however, deceive many that they have integrity but that can’t last forever. Be not deceived;
God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. (Gal. 6:7). Look at
the following and see a Biblical view what an integrety.
❖ Integrity means treating people fairly and honestly. Ye shall do no unrighteousness in
judgment, meteyard, in weight, or in measure (Leviticus 19:35-36). See the rest of the
verses in Deut. 25:15, Proverbs 16:11-13) the golden rule is with no exception here.
“Therefore, all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do even so to
them: for this is the law and the prophets” (Matthew 7:12). You need respect, respect
others too, you need love, love others too, you need help, help others too. If the people on
earth know and follow only this one, then we would have no problem at all, in fact, the
world will be a better place. 4
❖ Integrity is holding to your word or respecting your word: God is not a man, that He
should lie; neither the son of man, that He should repent: hath He said, and shall He not
do it? or hath He spoken, and shall He not make it good? (Numbers 23:19). Not like
Pharaoh who promised in many occasions to let the Israelite go when in affliction, but

withdrew his promise when the plagues were over until the Lord took his first probably
the only son by death. See (Exodus 8:28-32). However, with God, this is quite different.
This is what James wrote about God, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from
above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither
shadow of turning (James 1:17). A disciple who is a follower of Christ must be learn to be
committed to his word.
❖ Integrity will protect you: Let integrity and
uprightness preserve me; for I wait on thee.
(Psalm 25:21). A man with integrity fears no

think happens within him? His heartbeat of

expose him. Then if no repentance take place, lying to cover up will always occur. One
thing with sin is the fact that it starts with one block, just like a building, but increases all
the time until it gets taller than the builder. Christianity without integrity is not
Christianity at all. A Christ-like life without integrity is a questionable one.
❖ Integrity is better off than worldly riches and materialism: Better is the poor that
walketh in his uprightness, than he that is perverse in his ways, though he be rich
(Proverbs 28:6). A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor
rather than silver and gold (Prov. 22:1). Many people think that all they need is money or
power to get integrity but that is never true Money can never buy integrity. Many people
do not want to be like rich foxes around them simply because of their attitude. Desire to
be good in character, inward and outward is more than wishing to be rich.
❖ The Lord will test and judge your integrity: Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for
whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap (Gal. 6:7 see also 1 Chronicles 29:17).
God is the one that sees even in the secret places and He is the one to judge. Is possible to
deceive others, maybe your friends, colleagues, even your wife/husband and children,
but you cannot ever deceive God.
The LORD shall judge the people: judge me, O LORD, according to my

The writer of this Psalm was bold enough to ask God to judge him sin is the fact

❖ Integrity is tough to maintain but easy to lose: The bloodthirsty hate a with one block
person of integrity and seek to kill the upright (Proverb 29:10). It’s easy just like a
to read and talk about Job and Joseph, but it is not simple to live like building but
them. One among the African proverbs says, “Do not assume climbing a increases all
thorn tree is easy simply because you saw a monkey doing it.” What do the time until it
you think losing 10 children in one day feels like? Job did and did not gets taller than
curse God. It takes patience to build integrity; it is not the work of one the builder
year but it takes a long time to build. It can take many years to build but it
can be destroyed in just a minute. (Job 2:3, 2:9) “…. till I die, I will not

15
deny my integrity.” (Job 27:5). It is in opposition to the world, therefore, it’s difficult to
maintain.5
❖ Integrity will be rewarded: I know that you are pleased with me, for my enemy does not
triumph over me. Because of my integrity you uphold me and set me in your presence
forever. (Psalm 41:11-12).
Though it sounds so tough, it is very promising and rewarding. In fact, it pays back double (1
Kings 9:4-5, Nehemiah 7:2,). We see in the life of Joseph how integrity sent him to prison,
and the same integrity brought him out of the prison with double promotion, as the second in
command of all the land of Egypt. We see Job losing everything including his own health but
gained even more than he have before.
❖ Your integrity should set an example. In all things showing yourself to be a pattern
of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, (Titus 2:7).
If your integrity cannot stand out for everyone to see, then, there is a problem.
❖ Integrity glorifies God and edifies believers.
❖ Integrity protects personality.
❖ Integrity escalates growth and promotes trust.
❖ Integrity motivates and encourage.
❖ Integrity facilitates higher standards

Things that destroy integrity

Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. (1 Corinthians 15:33).

Bible, in many places, warns against being in bad company. (See Psalms 1ff ; 2 Cor. 6:14)
There are many things that destroy integrity. Now the works of the flesh are evident, which
are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions,
jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders,
drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in
time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God (Gal. 5:19-
21)

The following are things that a disciple needs to watch out for because they can destroy
integrity built over many-many years within the blink of an eye.

i. Money
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred
from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows (1 Timothy 6:10). The love
of the things of the world destroys integrity very quickly. Most especially those seeking for a

from him. But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza,
and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house. But the Philistines

iv. Pride
Pride stops person from learning, from valuing
other people, from seeing the efforts of others.
Pride makes you think and feel like you are the

clothe ourselves with humility 1 Peter 5:5
At times, we all struggle with pride in life since it’s easy to only see our achievements and
accomplishment. Sometimes, the Devil uses pride to block our eyes from seeing the many
potential and opportunities that waits us. However, if we could just let go
of our pride and move forward in God's plan, we benefit a lot.
On the other hand, the Bible goes so far as to warn us that God hates
the sin of pride and will discipline the proud (Pro. 6:16-17; 16:5). Stop Comparism

Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride
in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone
else,
• The end result of pride is destruction. Since God is the one to do the rewarding, and
we know that we cannot hide anything from him, the best thing is to repent. Isaiah
2:12 - The LORD Almighty has a day in store for all the proud and lofty, for all that is
exalted (and they will be humbled), Isaiah 23:9 The LORD Almighty planned it, to
bring down her pride in all her splendor and to humble all who are renowned on the

comes wisdom. Proverbs 16:5- The LORD detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of
this: They will not go unpunished. Proverbs 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, a
haughty spirit before a fall.
• God will exalt the humble: James 4:6 - But he gives us more grace. That is why
Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” James 4:10
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. Jeremiah 9:23 This is
what the LORD says: “Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of
their strength or the rich boast of their riches, Philippians 2:3 Do nothing out of
selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,
Proverbs 13:10 Where there is strife, there is pride, but wisdom is found in those who
take advice. Proverbs 18:12 Before a downfall the heart is haughty, but humility
comes before honor.
• Do not even be a friend to a proud person: Better to be lowly in spirit along with
the oppressed than to share plunder with the proud (Proverbs 16:19).
• Fools are better off than the proud: Proverbs 26:12 - Do you see a person wise in
their own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for them. Proverbs 27:2 Let someone
else praise you, and not your own mouth; an outsider, and not your own lips.

according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. (Romans
12:3) Feeling as you are the only one that deserve to have the best. Never
considering others as if they are important except you. That is never a quality
of a disciple.
vi. Lies and lack of integrity (Zechariah 8:16-17).
A man that is qualified to be called a man of integrity is a person who knows and does what
is right. Therefore, knowing what is right alone, does not complete integrity, but doing what
it is right and perfect life of integrity.
Take time to ask yourself these simple questions. Is there one person you know whether
alive or dead by now in your community that can be called man of integrity? What are people
saying about you? Can the people who know you very well admit that you are a person of
integrity?” Many times people disturb themselves about what others say about them secretly,
but can you answer this question “If anybody is talking about me right now, are they saying
what I am doing in secret?” Sometimes, this help keeps one accountable to do what is right
knowing that nothing is hidden. A disciple of Jesus should be free from blame and live an
honest, God fearing life.

18
d. HONESTY
“simply let your ‘yes’ be ‘yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil
one.” (Matthew 5:37)

Honesty is what makes a true disciple. It’s not far

away from integrity (Zechariah 8:16-17). These are
the things which you should do: speak the truth to
one another; judge with truth and judgment for peace
in your gates. “Also let none of you devise evil in
your heart against another, and do not love perjury;
for all these are what I hate,' declares the LORD."
Figure 2.8
• Lying is an abomination to the Lord. Proverbs
12:22 - Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his
delight. Proverbs 6:16-20 - These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an
abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent
blood, an heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to
mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he soweth discord among brethren.
Three or more out of the seven things God hate is lying or speaking what is not right.
Exodus 20:16 – “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.”
• Truth is freedom. And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
(John 8:32).
Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and
is a fool. (Proverbs 19:1)
Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of
men. (2 Corinthians 8:21). If you don’t have to struggle with remembrance, then tell
the truth all the time. If you want to be suspicious, speak the truth.
• Honesty is long life and good days -1 Peter 3:10-12 - For he that will love life, and
see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no
guile: Proverbs 11:3 The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the
perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them.
• Lying is the Devil’s language Matthew 5:37 But let your communication be, Yea,
yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. Colossians 3:9 Lie
not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; The Word
of God is right all his work is true Psalms 33:4
• When you are honest people will love you. Proverbs 16:13 - Righteous lips are the
delight of kings; and they love him that speaketh right.
• Don’t do to others what will hurt you. Luke 6:31- And as ye would that men should
do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

e. GOOD STEWARDS

Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of
God. Moreover, it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful (1 Cor. 4:1-2)
A disciple must be a good steward. In this universe, we have
God, people, and the things created by God. Among them are
water, land, plants, life, air, vast resources under the ground
and others. It is our responsibility to care for them. Peter F.
Drucker has this to say, “There is no such thing as a ‘resource’
until man finds a use for something in nature and then endows
it with economic value. Until then, every plant is a weed and
every mineral just another rock"6
This clearly depicts that we need to give value to the things
around us to be able to enjoy using them simply by taking
good care of them. These responsibilities were first given to
man, according to Gen. 1: 26-30 “……Then God said, let us
make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will
reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock,
all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that
scurry along the ground…..” Continue reading as 30 shows
more about how God put man in-charge of all the creation.
Figure 2.9 There is something unique about our Christian calling
and discipleship making. This has a lot to do with our responsibilities as stewards in God’s
world. Amy L Sherman in her wonderful volume tagged: “Kingdom Calling: Vocational
Stewardship for the Common Good,” asserts that, “Kingdom callings take us into schools,
hospitals, businesses, and art studios, as well as homeless shelters, AIDs clinics and battered-
women’s homes. Kingdom callings are lived out as neighbors, friends, spouses, parents,
employees and students as well as community volunteers, school mentors, Little League
coaches and, yes, church workers. In other words, Kingdom callings play out in all of life,
because that’s where life plays out.”7
Biblical Foundations of Stewardship
How Old Testament views Stewardship. We must see ourselves as stewards towards His
creation. In fact, the Bible has a lots of character examples full of stewardship for the common
good. The Bible refers us back to creation where “God placed the man in the Garden of Eden
to tend and watch over it”Gen.2: 15, God told Adam to name the animals (Gen. 2: 19-20,) right
after the fall of man, God gave another responsibility to man …….scratch a living from it Gen.
3:17c. Joseph planned well to stop the entire Egyptians and the surrounding towns from
starving (Gen. 41ff (which was in Africa)); Potiphar entrusted his whole house under Joseph’s
care because he was a good steward.

Man is required to rule (Psalms 8:6-8; 115:16); To rule over the things God created even though
they are for his own glory Rev. 4:11; We are to enjoy and use them 1Timothy 6:17.
Therefore, while enjoying them, we need to take good care of them.
New Testament views of Stewardship
➢ The parables of Talents Matthew 25:14-30 is one among the examples Jesus gave.
➢ Wealth creation in Luke 12:17
➢ Household manager 1Timothy 5:8
➢ Caring for widows and orphans James 1:26-17
➢ Compassion James 2:15-17
Below is a table by Amy that summarize all about steward.
Peace with God (Zeph. 3:14- Peace with self
20; 1 Cor. 13:12) Health/wholeness
Intimacy with God comfort
Peace with others Peace with creation
Unity/Love. Economic flourishing
Golden rule. Sustainability 8

Peace with self: To this, a lot of people don’t think it’s paramount to take care of their self.
They feel comfortable to live for days without taking bath, brush their teeth, even to wash
cloths. Thereby, causing havoc to their body that may led to huge spending at hospital. But we
need to be balanced as we handle ourselves daily. Dr. Amy asserted that, “God has created
human beings in such a way that spiritually, emotionally and physically all intertwine.” 9 By
this, it simply means cleanliness is next to godliness.
Peace with God: Our God is the lover of beauty and he is peace Amy in her book said as
quoted “God is the source of all beauty and creativity”10
Peace with others: There is a popular saying in this quote: “United we stand divided we fall”
Indeed the joy of forgiveness is better than the joy of retaliation. Except people understand this,
we will remain in bitterness and grievances with one another. Hostility toward each other gives
nothing except war. Therefore, it is our call to teach people how to love one another. We agreed
with Amy “In the consummated kingdom, we will experience deeper, richer, more satisfying
community with other people”11 if we live in peace with one another. Isa. 25:6-9.
Peace with creation: This is where many of us are guilty. A lot of people tend to care less
about creation, thinking it’s not their responsibility,
Believers advance sample of the kingdom when they devoted themselves to the great
work of belief and development; to hunger alleviation; to microenterprise; to
sustainable agriculture; to efforts to find new ways to provide everyone with adequate
shelter and clean water; and to advocacy for the rule of law so that just, free enterprise
can flourish12

If everybody can live in peace with himself, God, others and creation then everybody will be
happy; all creation rejoice; everyone benefit because they are for our good. Coming to our
community, we are all surrounded by things we can do.
A disciple needs to be a good steward for many reasons, here are few. “The essential task of
development is to provide opportunities so these people and the hundreds of millions not
having much better off, can reach their potential.”13 The following are benefit of being a good
steward
❖ We live longer: with less diseases.
❖ We become happier
❖ We become healthier
❖ We embrace true beauty
As a Disciple, double steward responsibility awaits us already: to care for the people by creating
awareness, and the normal responsibility. In Africa, during the wide spread and prolonged
dropout in South of the Sahara, Africa, “People in this region try to plan against hunger…”14
Let us all rise and save our nation.
f. FAMILY
And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he
might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously
against the wife of his youth. (Malachi 2:15)
Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a
family as “The basic unit in society
traditionally consisting of two parents
rearing their children.”
Family is: God’s embassy on earth. Like
a Master-plan of Tabernacle to Moses,
so also the home to the world through
practicing Christians. Home is also like
a guest house for God while sojourning
on earth. And if it seems evil unto you to
Figure 2.10 serve the LORD, choose you this day
whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of
the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as
God
for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. (Joshua 24:15)
There is one more thing about Joshua, son of Nun, that people Father

rarely talk about. Many people know this verse a lot but know little mother

about what it takes for him to make a statement like that. Here is what
it comprises. Joshua knew his wife very well unlike Jacob and his wife, Children

Rachel. She had stolen her father’s Idol yet no one even knows. With
whomsoever thou findest thy gods, let him not live: before our brethren discern thou what is
thine with me, and take it to thee. For Jacob knew not that Rachel had stolen them. (Gen.31:32)
But Joshua trusted his wife to the extent that he believed her but as for me and my house we
will serve the Lord. The idea of speaking on behalf of his family, the idea of speaking on behalf
of his wife is one amazing thing that his wife always demonstrates to him that she was an

obedient wife and his children as well. Now the question is, how many Christian (Disciple
makers) can make this kind of comment about their wives or children? Perhaps, only few. I
have known some pastor’s wives that use to say “God just called my husband not me” but for
Joshua and his wife it wasn’t like this, God called him to lead, God also called the wife to
support in whichever way possible.
Consider his children also, He spoke on their behalf as well. Many Christians, yes even
leaders today, are struggling with their children because things of the world have occupied
their hearts. I heard some pastor’s Children say, “It is my father that is a pastor not me so I
will do what I want,” That is not the same with Joshua’s children, to them whatever their
father choses, they will follow. Perhaps, facilitator’s children are same as mother’s children.
• The family of a disciple is supposed to be a place where the Bible is taught and followed,
father plays his role without motivation or pressure, mother is called blessed, godly
characters and virtues are reflecting daily on the children, peace keeps her permanent
habitation even when trouble arises, strangers love to stay, where church is born, first
love is ever crystal and deeply imprinted on the heart of the couple, God showcases His
model to the world, home where fight, conflict, misunderstanding and quarrel do not
sleep over.15
• A disciple is husband of one wife; his wife and his children trust him and are missing him
while he is gone. Not only spirituality but he also has time for other matters with his family
too.
• It is important if a disciple watches his life to play the good role Christ will play. The head
of every man is Christ: …. (1 Corinthians 11:3b). Once the leader knows that Christ is his
head, then he needs to live by example and most of the work of making a Godly family is
done. The next is for a disciple to have his family members trust him so much so that
corrections will be easy. But once they can see a spot on him and he is not even accepting
responsibility to make correction, then he will lose the trust of his wife and children and
the devil can easily penetrate their home.
• A disciple should “treat his wife with respect so that his prayers will be answered.” NIV
• (1 Peter 3:7b, &d).
• A disciple should bring up his children in the way of the Lord by being an example in
character, godliness, purity and obedience (Ephesians 6:4).
• To provide for his home regularly, not to shift
responsibility to his wife (1 Timothy 5:8).
• To keep vows and the covenant of marriage with

body controlled, able to teach, and be able to manage his family (1

The wife’s responsibilities include:
• To submit to her husband in all things (1 Peter 3:1).
• To build her home (Proverbs 14:1).
• Pray for her husband and children (Philippians 4:6).

g. Character

Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it
is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye
are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. (Matthew 5:12-13)

Figure 2.10: A city upon the hill that cannot be hidden.

Christians are known by their character. If the person who is close to you struggle to believe
that you are a Christian, t is a big problem.

A disciple must lead out with good character; a Godly and exemplary life. His life is to be
without question mark. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness,
goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law (Gal. 5:22-23). The fruit
of the Spirit should surround a disciple like the diagram above.

Let people around you, as a disciple maker, acknowledge that these fruits of the Spirit are
visible in your life. To be the light means to live a life of Holiness, clear and transparent life.

Trusted

People need a person they can trust before they are willing to express themselves mostly. A
disciple should be able to show people that he can be trusted in all things. A disciple should
know when to talk, how to talk, and where to talk. When a person is able to protect his
mouth, he can easily be trusted. Not everything is good all the time. Even the right thing at
wrong time can be hazardous. Medicine is good for certain disease but can be a poison when
taken too much or at the wrong time

Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to
answer every man (Colossians 4:6).
A disciple maker must be beyond reproach. He must to be a person with selective words, God’s
edifying words have to be in his mouth all the time. Lying is never an option to him. In fact,
death is not an option why a disciple or maker should lie.
1 Peter 3:10- For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil,
and his lips that they speak no guile.
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of
edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers (Ephesian 4:29).
In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise
(Proverbs 10:19).
A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit, …..
The heart of the righteous studieth to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil
things (Prove 15:4, 28).
Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles (Proverbs 21:23).
Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth
(Prov. 26:20).
The following scriptures can also help Proverbs 31:26; Psalms 34:13; Psalms 141:3;Titus 3:1-

Work

Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor
knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave,
whither thou goest (Ecc. 9:10.).
A disciple is a person who takes his/her
work seriously. A disciple should be a
person when asked to carry out an
assignment will do it with gladness as
though he is doing for himself. A disciple
must be a good worker and blameless.
But not a worker-holic because the body
also needs some rest and care.

Maintain Christian Value
For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. (John 13:15); I have
fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith (2 Timothy 4:7).
How committed are you to God’s work? Christian values are nothing more than being the light.
Let others see the light of Christ in you shining all over. Being the light means that darkness
has no abode in or around you. When all kind of sinful activities happen around you and there
is no problem or, you and the offenders feel comfortable, then you are not a light. Evaluate and
examine yourself from the inside if your life with Christ is normal.
Just as a bright light chases away darkness immediately, so also a disciple’s life with evil things.
Let people far and near see that Christ is in you without doubt.
To stand for righteousness, for justice, doing what is right. Living morally pure. Living without
corruption in anyway. Those are the things that shine light and maintain the Christian values.
Maintaining Christian value is as simple as having all the fruits of the Spirit in your life.
Self-Control
Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously,
and Godly, in this present world (Titus 2:12).
Self-control is listed among the fruit of the Spirit. A disciple-maker ought to know that his
good life is important in equipping Godly people for Christ. Without self-control no one will
admire your way of life, until your life attracts others, (Meaning, they admire you) before they
can trust you.
Therefore, a disciple maker should be aware that self-control is paramount, in fact, evitable.
The following verses can help guide on self-control.
Proverbs 16:32; 25:28; Romans 13:12-14; 1 Corinthians 6:12; 9:25-27; 1 Thessalonians 5: 22;
Hebrews 12:2; 2 Peter 1:5-7.
Respectable person

People value what they see and hear from a person they respect. As a disciple maker, you
need to be respected by your disciples. Respect doesn’t just come over night, it takes effort
and time to earn. Here we will be considering tips to earn respect as a disciple maker. Respect
comes gradually through your commitment with God, your work, your family, and the way
you treat the people around you. Respect yourself and value what you have. Respect comes
first from within. You can’t harvest what you have never planted. Therefore, offer respect to
get respect.

No one respects a person without integrity. It's the basis and the path way to respect. You will
have to be faithful to your words to earn respect. No one respects a person who is not stable.
In action and in words, honesty is paramount. Avoid being nagging in your talk; never be
arrogant and boastful. Respect doesn’t belong to such people.

26
The more you focus on adding value to others, the more respect you will get. Once the people
you disciple find out that what you are doing is for their benefits even though it takes your
effort, energy time and resources, they will respect you so much. Lolly Daskal sorts out an
acronym for the word ‘RESPECT’ that makes much sense to this study. Here is what she
wrote.

Remember basic kindness.

Encourage others.
Stand firm in your convictions.
Play fair and smart.
Extend a helping hand.
Cause no harm.
Think before you speak.16

The acronym for respect itself is all about respecting others, respecting yourself and you will
earn respect. What we call the “Respect rule” is; Respect yourself, respect others and you
shall gain respect. Acknowledge the good part of others, know the friends you keep. Let your
friends be people you admire.

h. FAITH
“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that
he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” Hebrew 11:6.
In the work of discipleship, faith is very important. Many times people will come with a
challenging situation and you may not even know how to respond. You have to trust God
yourself and then teach them also to trust. A disciple should have a story of how God has
stood up for him/her in life. Testimonies easily help people to believe in what you are telling
them.
We are living in a confused and complicated generation. Selfishness, murder,
insecurity, kidnaping, persecution, greed and others are in most news headlines or then the
news is incomplete. Yet, at the center of it all, we must see Christ as the only one who is able
to solve all our problems. We must teach our clients to have faith in God. “But without faith
it is impossible to please God.” People who don’t know God want to see God before they
believe in him, others wants to bring him to laboratory, to conduct experiment on him before
they believe in Him. Others wants to see where He lives, His size, His weight, His skin color
and many other flimsy excuses. But a disciple trusts in God not by what he sees but by what
he feels faith.
Looking at the present dispensation, it shows how relevant the question in Luke 18:8b is:
“When the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?” Faith is believing in what is

27
true. Faith has two elements: Being convinced of the truth, being certain of reality, having
evidence of unseen things, believing, hoping in, embracing, and seizing the truth.17
The Bible explains faith as; “... The substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not
seen.” (Heb. 11:1). We see from the Biblical definition, explicitly why others can’t have faith
in God. Because they want human reasoning to see God and believe. Yet, God is wider than
what human mind can comprehend. Others want to conduct experiment on Him but the whole
of the earth is just his foot-stool, how then can they have a big enough laboratory with
sufficient capacity to put Him. Others want to see where He was to believe in him, Yet, just
one star is big enough that it will take 1200 years for an Aeroplan of 220KH speed to go
around it so how can they ever reach Him? It’s clear that all these things don’t make sense.
But we have to pray for them. A disciple must be man of faith all the time. Don’t put God in
a box. Don’t give God conditions. Rather, let God be God and let the desires of your heart
always be, “God let your will be done in this situation; or God, what do you want me to do in
this situation; Or God teach me to trust and see you in this case” and believe that “all things
work for good to those who trust Him” All means all, the good the bad and the ugly.
Faith is what makes us strong. Faith is the state of being convinced about what we hope for.
When you will put God in a box, then you will have concerns and human analysis which will
always be impossible. 18
Few steps on how to have faith

Figure 2:12
“Contrary to popular teaching, faith is not mental delusion, presumption or self-deception,
but a work of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God.”19

message is heard through the word of Christ. Rom 10:17

2. You better believe the truth or you will believe in lies. They perish because they
refuse to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason, God sends them a powerful
delusion so that they will believe the lie. 2 Thes 2:10b-11. A.W. Tozer says, "I do not
recall another period when "faith" was as popular as it is today. If only we believe
hard enough, we'll make it somehow. So goes the popular chant. What you believe is
not important. Only believe... What is overlooked in all this is that faith is good only
when it engages truth; when it is made to rest upon falsehood it can and often does
lead to eternal tragedy. For it is not enough that we believe; we must believe the right
thing about the right One.20 Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you. For
many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Christ,' and will deceive many." Mat
24:4-5, read also 2 Timothy 1:12-14
3. You need to convince yourself: Rom 14:5b-“Each one should be fully convinced in
his own mind.”
4. Reading the scripture: “These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the
Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” John
20:31
5. Be stable minded: “If ye be continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not
settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and
which was preached to every creature which is under heaven;” Col. 1:23 Read Heb
2:1-3
The battle is between faith and reason on one side and emotions and imagination on the
other.... Supposing a man's reason once decides that weight of evidence is for
Christianity. I can tell that man what is going to happen to him in the next few weeks.
There will come a moment when there is bad news, or he is in trouble, or is living among
a lot of other people who do not believe it, and all at once his emotions will rise up and
carry out a sort of blitz on his belief. There will come a moment when he wants a woman,
wants to tell a lie, feels very pleased with himself, or sees a chance of making a little
money in some way that is not perfectly fair: some moment, in fact, at which it would be
very convenient if Christianity were not true.21
6. Learn from Abraham: Who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became
the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, "So shall your descendants
be." And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead
(since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah's womb. He did
not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith,
giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was
also able to perform. And therefore "it was accounted to him for righteousness."
Rom. 4:18-21 Read Heb 2:1-3; Luke 9:23-24; John 11:25-26; Gal 5:24; Heb 12:1-3.
7. You have to sacrifice other good things and take faith: We are talking about faith
and this passage just gave us all about faith. Both the importance and the things faith
can do in the lives of a disciple. Even though, I find it difficult to know where to stop
with this verse. Wherefore, let’s look mostly closely at the passage at hand. By faith
Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter,
choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing

pleasures of sin, ….. By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for
he endured as seeing Him who is invisible. By faith he kept the Passover and the
sprinkling of blood, lest he who destroyed the firstborn should touch them. By faith
they passed through the Red Sea as by dry land, whereas the Egyptians, attempting to
do so, were drowned. By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they were encircled
for seven days. By faith the harlot Rahab did not perish with those who did not
believe, when she had received the spies with peace……. Gideon and Barak and
Samson and Jephthah, also of David and Samuel and the prophets: who through faith
subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of
lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness
were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
Women received their dead raised to life again. Others were tortured, not accepting
deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection. Still others had trial of
mocking and scourging, yes, and of chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they
were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in
sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented of whom the world was
not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth.
And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the
promise, God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made
perfect apart from us. (Heb. 11:24-40).

i. CRAVING FOR SPIRITUAL MILK

Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil
speakings, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious To whom coming, as unto a living stone,
disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, (1Peter 2:1-4)
Milk is a unique nutritional source that is easy to digest and provides the perfect balanced
diet: protein, fat, carbohydrates, and other nutrients promote growth and development for a
baby. When a baby is born, what is most essential to that child is milk. Milk is what is given
to that child to grow; every basic nutrient required for the child’s growth is embedded in that
will be given to him/her. The health, growth, immunity and development of the child is
dependent on the quality of milk the baby is being fed.
When a person accepts Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, he is born again spiritually (John 3:3-
6). He experiences what scriptures refers to as spiritual birth, and must be nurtured just
exactly as a natural baby is being nurtured to become matured-he will have to take milk in
order to grow and develop spiritually. Spiritual birth is the only way for anyone to enter into
God’s spiritual family. Nobody is born full grown spiritually irrespective of what age the
person is converted. We are all born spiritual babies and will have to develop into mature
Christians (1Cor 3:1-2). One of the most important requirements in becoming a mature
Christian is to be fed with spiritual milk.
Is spiritual milk generally the word of God, or something more specific in the word of God?
In general terms when spiritual milk is spoken of, it has to do with the word of God. But
when being specific, it deals with those basic Biblical principles that solidify Christian
character.

30
Spiritual milk is the elementary teachings about God and Christ Jesus. It deals with the first
principles that one need to know as revealed in God’s word when he/she comes into God’s
Kingdom. These teachings include:
• Repentance from dead works.
• Having the assurance of salvation.
• Faith in God
• Baptism
• Laying on of hands
• Communion.
• Resurrection of the dead
• Eternal judgments

These are referred to as the milk of the word, and it is only when converts have a good grasp
of these doctrines, they can be well developed spiritually.
Steps in spiritual milk:
• By putting off the evil that seeks to cling to you.
• Know that your growth depends on your feeding on the word
• Stimulate your desire through remembering the goodness of the Lord.

One of the evidences of spiritual growth in a disciple is a hunger for spiritual food (the word
of God). We must not remain babes in Christ. But just as babies have great appetites, so also
we should have similar desire for the word of God. As we grow in the Lord, we can now
begin to handle the meat and bread of God’s word.
The most important part of discipleship is how much time you give to reading God’s word,
prayers and intercession.
j. LOVE & COMPASSION
But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they
fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd (Matthew 9:36)
Talking about Jesus’ kind of compassion,
is broader than what just pen and paper can
hold. The entire life of Jesus is love and
compassion. In fact, it’s difficult to talk
about Jesus without citing his love and
compassion. All that He did can be
categorized under love and compassion.
Jesus did not even spare his own life John
(3:16).
Though Christ had human nature, He did
not live on earth pursuing a career, rather,

31
how to save humankind was his career. Nor did He own any house or business.22
We see compassion in almost everything that Jesus did

❖ His coming (Mark 10:45; Matt. 20:28 John 3:16).

❖ In His teaching (Luke 10:29-37; Mt. 18:22-35).
❖ His life & His ministry (Matt. 9:36, 14:14).
❖ The Apostles did the same (Acts 4:32-37).

For more see the following scriptural verses; Mark 1:41; 9:41; Luke 10:25-37; 19:4; John
7:17-18; Romans 2:4; 12:1; Ephesians 4:23; 1 Thessalonians 5:14; James 1:5-8; 1 Peter 3:8.

Since we see compassion in Jesus style of life, we can know that a disciple without
compassion is but a noise. Compassion is not only about sympathy or kindness, it’s about
love. When you love people, you don’t want them to go to hell, it is also trying to help people
to get a crown of life and to live happily during their days here on earth.

Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful (Luke 6:36).

Love
Love explains everything. In the past, many Christians considered people from other faiths as
great enemies. It’s not wrong to have enemies but it is very wrong not to love your enemies.
The whole scripture is summed up in this one-word LOVE.
➢ We see love in the garden after Adam and Eve fell God still clothe them (Gen. 3:21).
➢ We see love before the flood. God told Noah to warn the people then instructed him
to make an Ark to give refuge to all who repent (Gen. 6:14).
➢ God called Abraham to bless the nations through him (Gen. 12:3).
➢ We see God’s love in the life of Israelites (Exo.3:7-10, Deut. 7:8) “But because the
LORD loved you and kept the oath which He swore to your forefathers, the LORD
brought you out by a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery,
from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.” (NIV).
➢ We see God’s love in providing laws on how to reach him (Exo. 20).
The whole scripture ➢ We see God’s love to the Gentile nations (Jonah 4:11).
is summed up in ➢ Christ came on love (John 3:16).
this one-word ➢ Christ lived a love filled life (Luke 23:34).
LOVE. ➢ He teaches love. Luke 6:27- But I tell you who hear me: love your enemies, do
good to those who hate you, wooooow. That’s easy to say and to teach but is it
easy to act? Let’s pause here as I tell you my experience.
After the Boko Haram militant overran us, I was displaced for 2 years, passed through
hardship, and many other things happened. On my arrival back to the northeast, (Uba) to be
specific, the police caught a suspected Boko Haram member. Now they want to investigate
and interrogate him to be sure that he was a Boko Haram. But there was a crowd that was
impatient to wait for the result and, was shouting "Kill Him! Kill Him!! Kill him!!!” I joined
them shouting “Kill him! Kill him!! Kill him!!!” But then that sweet calm voice again inside
of me said “Kill him? I thought as a Christian we have to forgive, love your enemies, pray for

those who persecute you, turn the other check. But now you are shouting ‘kill him’ what kind
of Christian are you?” I started reflecting on the things I passed through while I was
displaced, I reflect on these chapters: Matt. 5-7; Luke 6:27-38. I never knew when tears
started rushing out of my eyes then I went back to my room and started to pray for
forgiveness for I was not practicing what I was reading, teaching about and never until then
did I know the pain of forgiveness or loving my enemies. That was when I knew that loving
your enemies is not just hard but impossible to man a without Christ.
The Christian kind of love is a unique one. If you love those who
love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love
them. No religion that I know teaches loving your enemies except
Christianity. As a disciple, we ought to live a life that people can Every action of

➢ Without love we are just a noise. Though I speak with the
tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become
sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift
of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and
though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I
am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I
give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing (1 Cor. 13:1-3).
One testimony of a Muslim young guy concerning his next-door, neighbor a pastor. This
young man told me that, “My neighbor is really a man of God, if all Christians are like him
for sure Christianity is a religion to be” I was so curious and asked why did he make such a
statement? His response was, “He loves people,” Love is very effective in relating with
others. I don’t even know how one can relate with others without love.
The question now is, what is this love? Paul
again provide us with an answer. Love suffers

Cor. 13: 4-8a).
A disciple must practice love. As Jesus
taught his disciples. A new commandment I
give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

33
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another (John
13:34-35). The one identity card Jesus gave his disciples is “love” as seen in this verse.

ACTIVATES THAT PRODUCE

QUALITIES
Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all
guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all
evil speakings, As newborn babes, desire
the sincere milk of the word, that ye may
grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that
the Lord is gracious (1 Peter 2:1-3).
All of these five qualities should be parts of
life of a disciple who truly follows Jesus and
wants to lead others to Christ.
Hear: Rom. 10:17, (To listen to God in all
direction).
Read: Rev.1:3, Joshua 1:8-9.
Study: Acts 17:11, Joshua 1:9.
Memorize: Psalms 119:9-11.
Meditate: Psalms 1:2-3.
A disciple is a person whose good character is without question. He/she never compromises
character for materialism or fear. But should be a man/woman who can boldly speak and ask
people to imitate him as he imitates Christ, his purpose is to set an example for weaker
vessels to follow. The following are good qualities of a disciple of Jesus Christ.
A disciple is a person with good qualities worthy of emulation. But in this aspect, we are
going to look at few good qualities that a disciple maker should have and encourage the ones
he/she disciples to have same. The diagram below shows

34
CHAPTER THREE
CAUTION FOR DISCIPLER.
Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication,
uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath,
strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of
the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such
things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Galatians 5:19-21

Many writers were able to come out with many pictures to explain their imaginations
concerning the fruit of the Spirit but few or no one even cared to put some for the fruits of
flesh. But I keep imagining it to be this way.

35
Now the fruits of the flesh or “The works of the flesh” are what the world and the body want
but in a long run, destruction follows. Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and
broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it (Matt.7:13).
I feel like pausing for a few minutes to cry just for the imagination of hell and the pain and
turmoil that is there. To me, 2000 years of enjoyment on earth is not enough to compensate for
just one day in hell, and the great tumult, pain, and dehumanization that will happen there.
It just baffles me to see how worldly people think. Copland comments, “If it feels good, it must
be right”23 By this, it means that, whatever do anything pleasing unto you for since you are
happy about it, then is right thing to do. Then the question is, why do we try to stop the terrorist
from killing? Or kidnapers? Or thieves? These moral issues are the silent church killer and until
we understand these, we will not get any further with discipleship.
Many people thought that, once they feel okay about everything then it is okay. But the
Bible warns against trusting in one’s feelings “He who trusts in his own heart is a fool...” (Pro
28:26). It’s clear in this verse that the heart is not to be trusted. However, many do trust in their
hearts and it leads them to destruction “There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end
is the way of death” (Pro 14:12).
Moral: “(from Latin: moralis, lit. 'manner, character, proper behavior'). Moral, is the
differentiation of intentions, decisions and actions between those that are distinguished as
proper and those that are improper.”24 Also “Morality can be a body of standards or principles
derived from a code of conduct from a particular philosophy, religion or culture, or it can derive
from a standard that a person believes should be universal.25
Since morality is a universal belief or official adopted way of life, many people take
advantage of it. Particularly, 1 Samuel 16:7-“The LORD does not look at the things people
look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." Many
Christians are misusing this verse as well. That since God looks at the heart, then it doesn’t
matter whatever they do with their body, meaning; they can dress immodestly (Still they are
taking advantage)

Few of these moral issues include:

b. Sexual Immorality: this is the one every Christian has to deal with at a certain point (1
Thess. 4:3-4) Says, “It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid
sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that
is holy and honorable” But in this present dispensation, fornication is almost not a sin
now, phonography among the youth is ubiquitously, Homosexuality, Bisexual,
Transgender, Gay and Lesbianism, has become the order of the day.
c. The Institution of Marriage: Marriage connects two people together; marriage is
ordained by God to be one man one woman. But many have defiled it. Some do not
want to take it as forever till death will part, rather, they get divorced and remarry.
Divorce and remarry, Homosexuality, Abortion, Domestic Violence, Euthanasia,
Gambling, Alcohol, Tobacco, Dancing, Immodest Apparel and Dishonesty, are among
the qualities that should never be found in a disciple.
d. LIES: Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a
murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in
him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of
it. (John 8:44)

“To make an untrue statement with intent to deceive. Or to create a false or misleading
impression”26 A lie is a fabricated, fabulist, fibbed, prevaricator, or idea that has no facts.
Lies can be in written words, signs, or spoken words. In a text message, we can lie and
deceive, in our sign communication and in words we make an utterance. Liars generally lie
for the following reasons:
❖ Deceit,
❖ Protection,
❖ Defense,
❖ Prevention against dangers or
❖ To save.
For these reasons, the liars have tried to simplify or justify themselves with white lies and
have said it’s ethical to lie just to save life. I don’t know if the power of saving that life is
in their hands or God Rev. 21:8c: “… All liars their place will be in the fiery lake of burning
sulfur...” All means all. All liars whether black or white or yellow or green or purple “ALL”
A disciple should watch out.
We see how enticing lies can be from the Devil with Adam and Eve at the Garden: “You will
not certainly die” were the words of the Serpent to Eve. He presented her with what seems
like the truth but is not the Truth, they would have lived forever but that is not the way it is
now. A lie is anything that is not the truth. For the fact that it looks or sounds like the truth
does not make it to be truth. Paul in wrote that; for Satan himself masquerades as a servants
of righteousness (2 Cor. 11:13-14). We see how the Devil always put an effort to deceive
many by parading himself as light. It doesn’t matter who said it, as long as is not the truth,
then it is a lie. A disciple should watch out for liars and be careful how they speak.
❖ Lie killed Ananias and his wife. They lied to the Holy Spirit and was struck
death immediately (Acts 5:3).
❖ Liars must be punished. Proverbs 13:5 says, “No one who practices deceit will
dwell in my house,” says the Lord, and in (Proverbs 12:22) The Lord detest
lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful.
❖ When a person has become a disciple, he has taken off the old self with its
practices (Col 3:9). Lying is of the old nature, not for a regenerated believer.
❖ As new creature (2 Cor. 5:17), Christians are called to live a holy life by
obeying the truth, to have sincere love for one another; and to get rid of deceit
(1 Peter 1:13-25; 2:1).
❖ No one trusts liars on anything even if what they are saying is the truth.
❖ Lies also tarnish one’s image and affects integrity negatively.
❖ Lies is one of the things God detests and he commands us not to do it (Lev
19:11).
❖ It also prevents one from being in God's presence (Rev. 21:8; Psalm 5:6.).
❖ A Lie prevent greater things coming your way. Joining hands with deceit is
also lies. We must control ourselves tongues from lies
The following are also aspects or branches of lies:

37
i. Misrepresentation
ii. Omission
iii. Fabrication
iv. Exaggeration
v. False recognition
vi. Fibs or little lies,
vii. Falsifying Date of Birth
viii. WAEC Results
ix. Plagiarism
x. Exams malpractice etc.
Disciples are not to lie but to speak the truth no matter what, so as to be free. To love life and
to see good days, we must not lie 1 Peter 3:10.
e. GREED
Greed is an egotistical and unnecessary desire for more of something (Power, access, wealth
or money) than is needed and not deserved. Greed is selfishness, wanting all just for yourself.
A greedy person is never grateful to God for what he/she is having.
Things to know about greed
a. Greed comes when we are not thankful to God.
b. Greed is being thoughtless of others and being selfish.
c. Greed is one of the negative things that affect a lot of people.
d. Greed is not the seeking for possessions, but it is the motive/intentions behind
it. Or having more than enough
e. Greed can lead to bad ways of owning possessions
f. Living successfully does not necessarily mean greed.
g. Unhealthy competition resulted into greed
h. Comparing others with yourself
i. Greedy people bring ruin to their house.
j. Greed causes people to wander from the faith.
k. Greedy people stir up conflict.
l. Lack of value in who we are and what we have instead basing our value only in
things.
m. Greedy people will not inherit God's kingdom (Eph. 5:5)
To avoid greed, we should be
i. Thankful to God for what we have.
ii. Be thankful for who you are.
iii. Use your resources wisely to bless humanity.
iv. Focus on the good things God is doing in your life.
v. Stop looking at others.
vi. Allow God's love to fill your hearts.
vii. Contentment is the solution to greed.
viii. Be a generous giver.
ix. Be faithful in little things. (Don’t take any small thing for granted)
A disciple should be far away from greed because it is totally opposite of love. Since a disciple
is expected to have love then greed should not even be an option to consider.
f. FEAR (What if?)

38
The Lord is my light and my salvation whom shall, I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of
my life of whom shall I be afraid? (Ps 27:1).
Fear is a sensation of danger ahead and trying to avoid it.
When Adam and Eve sinned, then fear was first encountered, the realization that, “they were
naked” (Gen 3:7). Sin is the root cause of fear in a man. Sin exposes man to the state of
helplessness, worry, insecurity, and most importantly emptiness. Man begins to do things his
own way; defining his purpose of existence; and think he is responsible for protecting himself
or family from danger. Man, outside the protection of God is exposed to evil. It is important
to note that the fear we are talking about here is not the same as what it means “to fear the
Lord.” To fear the Lord is to revere, to be in awe, to obey, to worship, to respect the Lord.
The fear we are talking about here is a spirit. The spirit that threatens people physically and
emotionally. It makes people feel insecure, the lesson to derive from this as a disciple, is that
God did not give us the spirit of fear (2 Tim 1:7). The Spirit you receive the day you gave
your life to Christ. (The day you encounter Christ) Does not make you slaves, so that you live
in fear again (Rom 8:15).
Where there is love, there is no fear, Jesus loves us and has given us his peace to
remain within our hearts in whatever kind of situation (John 14:27).
Sometimes our fear comes when we receive a threat from those who can kill the body, but the
Scripture says, “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body” (Mt 10:28). Fear makes a man
to give false report, to exaggerate, to tell a lie (Num. 13:31-33). We must get rid of fear in our
lives and put our trust in God alone. You cannot trust God and still live in fear. Faith and fear
do not walk together. God is not happy with those who live in fear, “for without faith, it is
impossible to please God” (Heb.11:6).
There was nothing like fear in the life of Jesus, there is no fear as well in the life of a person
who truly had an encounter with the Lord. Fear is a spirit and that spirit is not from God, if we
have the Spirit of God in us, we are expected to have no element of fear. Rather, we are to have
the spirit of boldness like the disciples when the Holy Spirit came upon them. Fear is attached
to our emotions and tells us what may not really exist.
Fear thwarts us from enjoying:
a) God's goodness.
b) Takes away faith and stops us from taking steps into doing His will.
c) Fear is the greatest weapon the devil uses to cripple many believers.
d) God’s presence and help.
e) Takes away our confidence.
How to overcome fear:
a) Lord says “Do not fear” (Isaiah 43:1).
b) Have complete trust in God as a disciple
c) Living in faith daily.
d) Live a transparent life.
e) Be clean in all your ways.
f) “Be strong and be courageous...” (Joshua 1:6a).
g) Fear not men but God who has the power life and death.

39
h) Do what God expects of you.
i) When we look at God's love it casts out fear from us (1Jon 4:18).
j) Put your trust fully on God and not on our human understanding.
k) We must always be conscious of God's presence with us (Josh1:9).
l) We must also seek God daily (Psalms 34:4).
m) When your heart is fearful, “Be strong, do not fear, your God will come” (Isa 35:4).
n) Seek the Lord. What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. In God I will praise his word,
in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me (Psalm 56:3-4).

Fear comes as a result of the following:

a) Doubt
b) Unbelief in God.
c) Fear comes from the devil.
d) Disobedience to God.
e) Worry (Mt 6:34; 94:19).

g. Sexual immorality
“Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who
sins sexually sins against his own body.” NIV (1 Cor. 6:18).

This word is also translated as “whoredom,” “fornication,” and “idolatry.” It means “a

surrendering of sexual purity,” and it is primarily used of premarital sexual relations. From
this Greek word we get the English word pornography, stemming from the concept of
“selling off.” Sexual immorality is the “selling off” of sexual purity and involves any type of
sexual expression outside the boundaries of a biblically defined marriage relationship. And he
answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning
made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother,
and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?(Matthew 19:4-5).

By now, it is expected that a disciple already knows how important his life with Christ is. Then
a disciple also needs to know that his body is a “temple of the Holy Spirit” (1 Cor. 6:17-20).
Some religion that see no importance on purity are involved in perverse and immoral sexual
activities. In fact, in other religion is proof of being a hero. But when a Christian disciple uses
his physical body (Temple) for immoral purposes, that disciple despises the temple of God and
is not worthy to be a disciple (1 Cor. 6:9-11).
With sexual immorality, it is not possible to keep a strong intimacy with God when our bodies
(temple) and souls are given over to impurities of any kind. (Rom. 1:24; Gal. 5:19; Eph. 4:19;
Matt. 5:8; Psalms 24:3-4).
Sexuality is God’s design. He alone defines the parameters for its use. The Bible is clear that
sex was created to be enjoyed between one man and one woman who are in a covenant marriage
until one of them dies (Matthew 19:6). Sexuality is His sacred wedding gift to human beings.
Any expression of it outside those parameters constitutes abuse of God’s gift.27
Adultery, Premarital sex, Homosexuality, Pornography, Lesbianism, are all outside God’s
design, which makes them sin.

h. PRIDE
When pride cometh, then cometh shame:
but with the lowly is wisdom, (Proverbs
11:2)
Pride is the opposite of humility, having a
deep sense of self satisfaction.
Pride is arrogant, boastful, insolent, stiff-
necked, haughty or conceited or self-
important.
Pride in self is not good because you feel
you don't need God’s strength and pride depends only on our accomplishment pride does not
give other people respect or value. It sees other people as nothing or useless. It is the root of
sin (Psalms 10:4). Pride should not be part of a disciple’s life because it's not the life of Christ.
It is pride not to seek God (Psalms. 10:4).
Solutions
a) We should associate with all classes of people.
b) The solution is to humble ourselves so as to be exalted by God Himself.
c) We should also value other people.
d) Have a teachable spirit and always be open to learning.
Problems with pride
a) Pride is a trap (Psalms 59:12).
b) Strife is also as a result of pride.
c) Makes you think you know everything while you don't,
d) Pride is an abomination to God and is punishable (Prov16:5).
e) If you want to destroy your organization, just introduce pride into it that’s all.
Pride is evil because it unveils and lifts our self-interests and our self-sufficiencies, which
seem necessary and good. But, when we are self-sufficient, we will not only fail to see our
need for redemption, but also fail to see our need for growth in spiritual matters. Therefore,
self becomes the god, and the work of the One True God is muted and put aside. When this
happens, all of our relationships from church to family to work will be distorted and
eventually, utterly destroyed. A person’s pride comes between him and God and distorts the
Word and work He has for them. It cancels out relationships, growth, and purpose in life.
People who practice arrogance and condescension toward others will not surrender to God as

41
Lord. They think of themselves as self-reliant, which is a slap to the face of God. Self-
reliance is an oxymoron and has no place in healthy relationships28

i. ANGER
Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the
devil (Eph. 4:26)
Anger is divided into two, right anger and wrong anger.
Right anger is the one that is out of love. The person you love you show your anger to so that
the person will take heed to do the right thing all the time. But the right anger does not let the
sun too go down. It is for correction, and discipline.
Anger is an attribute of God (Ps. 2:4, Deut. 32:41, Rom. 1:18) and is reflected in the life of
Jesus (eg. Mk. 3:5). God justly gets angry at those who violate His perfect and righteous laws.
But we never read or hear one instance where God gets angry and went out of control. He is
always slow to anger and quick to forgive. Again there has never been a place that God gets so
angry with people that He refused to forgive.
The wrong anger is the one we are talking about. A disciple should not have a wrong anger.
Below are the qualities and negative effects of wrong anger.
❖ It takes away self-control.
❖ Loss of respect from others.
❖ Excessive irritability.
❖ Impatience or restlessness.
❖ Pessimism,
❖ Hypercritical,
❖ Struggle with jealousy/envy,
❖ Dealing with feelings of abandonment and rejection,
❖ Feelings of indifference
❖ Unloving attitude is a hateful attitude
❖ Rash, unkind words (Matt. 12:36-37, Eph. 4:29).
❖ Insomnia or even frequent disturbing dreams.
❖ Muscular tension.
❖ Exhaustion.
❖ Sinful anger damns people (Gal. 5:19-21).
❖ Sinful anger breaks fellowship with God (Ps. 66:18).
❖ Sinful anger damages relationships (Gen. 4:5-8).
❖ Sinful anger escalates into further sin (Prov. 29:22; Ps. 37:8).

j. Pray.
k. Reading the scripture as a habit.
l. Understand people.
m. Put yourself in their shoes.
n. Forgive immediately whatever it is.
o. Never keep thinking on it.

g. CONTEMPT
Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on
the Lord out of a pure heart. But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do
gender strifes. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to
teach, patient (2 Timothy 2:22-24).
Contempt is “the act of despising, the state of mind of one who despises or disdain, or lack
of respect or reverence for something, acting with contempt for public safety.” 29
When a disciple is carrying contempt in him, then he can’t lower himself to the level of weak
and sinful people he needs to disciple. He can’t contextualize.
Actually, the work of discipleship is very hard. Changing people’s mindset is difficult is hard
and I can’t see a person with contempt being effective at discipleship.
“Being a person who is contemptuous to others is being judgmental; this is extreme
foolishness, because you are, in fact, throwing a boomerang of condemnation that comes
back to hit you harder than you threw it. God judges according to truth; we judge according
to personal agendas, greed, and misunderstanding. Do you value others in the same way you
do yourself? Is the scale balanced”30

SECTION TWO
The real issue now is how to effectively disciple people? By the time you reach this page, it is
assumed that you know all about discipleship. The table below shows what is needed and its
effect in discipleship.

What is needed Its percentage (value)

Prayer 60%
Your life 30%
Your words 10%

We could see that all the difficulties in discipleship is first addressed in prayer. Success in
discipleship without prayer is truly ‘try by error’ but nothing more than that.
The next sections are suggestions on how to disciple different categories of people.

44
CHAPTER FOUR
THE RIGHT PERSON TO DISCIPLE. Discernment (types of people Biblically).
The Bible clearly talks
about two categories
of people, these are
“the righteous and the
sinners.” And
whosoever was not
found written in the
book of life was cast
into the lake of fire.
(Rev. 20:15). This
verse shows whatever
you are, you fall into
one of two options.
However, levels of
spiritual understanding of people differs, and as a disciple, we will meet any of these types of
people, so it is good to be able to discern their level of maturity in Christ. Therefore, we are
going to consider a few categories of people.
Three classification of men
1. Natural man

"But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness
unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." (1 Corn. 2:14)

The natural man is a man that evaluates everything based on his understanding, and on what
he can touch and see, probably perform an experiment. But since the things of God are
experience through faith, he sees them as foolishness. The natural man has concerns, worries,
and fears. In all that he does, forgiveness is impossible to him. He is afraid, because he has to
see before he can take an action.

The natural man is a man who lives according to nature. He is governed by his intellect
and by his natural affections. The natural man has never experienced the rebirth, he is
unconverted. The natural man is asleep to spiritual things. He cannot understand
spiritual things, and spiritual things are foolishness unto him because he cannot process
them in a rational manner. So, the Word of God, the promises of God, the grace of God,
and faith in God in its various, marvelous ways can find no existence in his mind. The
natural man is one whose perceptions do not extend beyond his reason, experiences,
and feelings. Therefore, the natural man lives in a small world. He lives in a world
limited by his finite mind and his five senses. The natural man cannot enter the kingdom
of God, for flesh and blood does not inherit the kingdom of God. Therefore, Jesus said,
Except a man be born again, he cannot see (nor enter) the kingdom of God." Man must
be born again (John 3:3, 5, 7).31

31
www.wgbd.org/oldcto252.html

45
This natural man is an unbeliever. However, these people can be found attending Church. These
people live a very confused life. They can come to Church but the Bible does not answer their
daily life questions or solve their problems.

To disciple (Evangelize to) this person, one needs much prayer, time, patience, and endurance.
Most of these people like to debate and though they come to church, they boldly will tell you
that they are hell citizens. They have utterances like “We are not perfect, not one is perfect, I
know that I am going to hell, God cannot forgive me, and God cannot save my
child/wife/myself in this situation. Though they come to Church, they don’t see how it is
possible for them to make their ways right. When you are in the process of discipleship with
them, you should be prepared to debate with them but watch out, when they begin to get angry,
stop and wait for another appropriate day to resume your conversation.

It might take time, it might not. Prepare for both. Remember these people can be difficult to
deal with, be patient but continue to work with them follow them gradually, till they
understand. See more details in discipline unbelievers.

2. Carnal man.
And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto
babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to
bear it, neither yet now are ye able. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you
envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?(1 Cor. 3:1-3)
These are people who commits sin, and it does not matter to them at all.
Churches have a lot of such people. These kinds of people, don’t only feel comfortable in their
sin, but try to justify why they sin or call it another name. I will say this group of people are
the most difficult to disciple. They just embrace religion but they have no contact at all with
the source of it. These kinds of people are there in every religion. But now, we have another
name for them and it is ‘folk religion.’ This means, they have their official religion inside
another religion. These could be in Christianity, Islam, or whatever. They are just associate
with religion but are never dedicated or committed to it. When they are in church, we call them
‘split level Christianity.’ They are never serious about the faith.
These people constitute an alarming number of the Church members in this generation. These
people never grow, they were taught how to be converted and how to follow church doctrines.
They know about baptism with water, but not allowing Christ to rule in their lives. These are
the people that mix Christianity with other powers. But not like the natural man who will do it
openly, this group of people will do it in secret so that no one sees them. On Sunday they are
in Church but the rest of the days of the week they are busy consulting diviners, magicians,
witch doctors and many others. These people are just like the natural man, the Bible does not
provide solution to their daily problems so they seek help from other gods. We also call these
people hypocrites.
Their characteristic are, “…Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry,
witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies. Envying, murders
drunkenness, reveling,…” (Gal. 5:19b-21). The issue of salvation is not certain in the hearts
and minds of this group of people.

A carnal Christian is a babe in Christ. Hence, a carnal Christian is one who has been
born of God, but he lives outside the kingdom of God which is "righteousness, and
peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost" (Rom. 14:17). He is one who does not grow, mature,

46
or develop. He is as a baby. He has no accomplishments but that he is born. He cannot
walk, he cannot talk, he cannot understand nor follow instructions, he cannot help, he
cannot serve, he cannot sacrifice for others, he cannot lift the burdens of others, he
cannot fight battles, he cannot clean himself nor feed himself nor pull himself up. A
carnal Christian is as a babe in Christ, however, who is not a fresh babe that brings joy,
but a babe that has been a babe too long. And so, a state of babe-hood has turned into a
tragedy, into disgrace, into a burden of the church. When you see a baby in diapers and
still slobbering at age five, ten or twenty, there is nothing cute about that. We don’t
mind if newborn babes are selfish because we know they will grow up to become
productive people. But when babes don’t grow up, and continue to be selfish, to
continue to act as babes, then there is great concern. 32

For to be carnally minded is death...Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is
not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. (Romans 8:6a–7) Read also (Luke 15:7,
10; 1 Thess. 4:3 Luke 9:23; Ps. 51:5).

How to disciple such a person needs prayer and wisdom. They will always tell you that all is
well until you push harder or you become so close to them. When they trust you then they will
begin to tell you what has been going on underground. Never revile their secret that’s is step
number one. You must be a person of high integrity in keeping their trust.

These people need to see something good happening in your life before they can easily trust.
They can easily give up when they try one thing and is not working out for them. Therefore,
keep reminding them that without challenge, there is not hero.

3. The Spiritual man

But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. For who hath
known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ. (1 Cor.
2:15-16)
This man surrenders all to Christ. He must hear from God before making any decision, and
does all things by faith. Trust God with all his heart, mind and soul everything he has is for
the gospel. Sadly enough, they only constitute few numbers of the Church. If you did not fall
among these few, you can’t be the true disciple. But if you are among these few, everything
you do is either discipleship or evangelism. Prayer is mandatory in his life, Spiritual growth
is his daily concern, promotes unity of the Spirit among believers, understands the voice of
God. In fact, they have in them “…. love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness,
faith, Meekness, temperance …” (Gal 5:22-2)
When you succeeded in leading your disciple to this level, you have done a wonderful work.
The few things that remain for you is to keep your disciple(s):
• Accountable.
• Never look back
• God has already forgiven all their sins (Devil will always remind them of their past
sin and create a struggle in them as to whether their big sins can be forgiven.)

CHAPTER FIVE
PRACTICAL METHOD OF DISCIPLESHIP (Building Healthy Relationships)

(Proverbs 1:7; 3:3-10; 12:25, 28; 25:15; Isaiah 1:10-15; Jeremiah 6: 20; Amos 5:21-24;
Matthew 5:11-12; John 3:5; 8:12; 1 Corinthians 3:16-17; 10:23-24; 2 Corinthians 3:16-17; 4:6;
9:12-13; Ephesians 4:15, 5:8-9; Philippians 1:27-30; 2:3-8, 14-15; Colossians 4:6; Hebrews
11:6; James 1:17;1 Peter 1:22-23; 2:9-12, 21-27; 1 John 4:7-12). Just as the percentage is
shown, your life as a disciple and your prayer life are the most important part, your words are
the least important. Life and situations also defer. What has been a solution today, may not be
a solution tomorrow but a prayerful disciple is always loaded with new ideas and the Holy
Spirit is always current.
A. ADULT
The Adult we are talking about are categories of people aged 50 and above. Here is what you
need to understand with this age group, they have given up on pursuing success and fantasy.
All they care about is settling down, their children, their grandchildren. Only those who are
successful before this age, still think they have plenty of life to live. One important part of this
age group is known that when they have their mindset on anything change is difficult. If you
are discipling them, then you have to be sure to struggle with their mindset. Sometimes you
have to get them things they can see with their eyes. Let’s look at them in this aspect.
I. Men
For men at 50 and above, are people who are now okay in whatever condition they ended up.
“Who cares” they feel like it is impossible to get anything done. It’s impossible to be forgiven
of their sinful life, it’s impossible to important in the community. Therefore, they just relax and
are okay to die just like the way they are.
For these reasons, be ready to follow them gently. Don’t argue too much with them, sometimes
even scriptural quotation can’t help. Use relevant examples of what is or has happen that may

48
apply to their situation. For example, if they think their sin are too much for God to forgive
them, you can use scripture in this case. But if they think they can’t make prayers any more,
then you can find out a good example of people who achieve late in life.
II. Women
For women, though they have given up they are easily can be rekindled to give it a try. All
you need is to encourage them very often because just as you can easily get them rekindled, so
also, they can get quenched.
III. Barren
In Africa Nigeria, the blame always goes to women. African culture was not design on Bible,
however, some of their argument can be seen on Sarah, Rachel and Hannah in the Bible. These
three women in the Scripture, their husbands had other wives and they bored them children. In
African perspective, whether the man had other wives or not, the blame goes to the wife(s) and
pressure from the husband’s side of the family. To disciple this people, the husband has to get
involve. As a disciple maker, try to get the husband off the pressure of friends and his family.
Try to get the husband disconnected from the people he listens to everyday. They have a greater
influence on him. Until the husband cut some people that have negative influence on him, there
will never be peace.
IV. Marital problem (unfaithfulness)
This is the biggest problem in Jos. Prayer is vital in this case. Talking may not help much but
nevertheless, you have to sacrifice more than any other people, you must be a disciplined in
this situation. You have to engage them in practice exercises these include:
1. Daily prayer. Call them on phone if you cannot visit daily and pray with them, ask them
to tell you the content of their prayer before you call or visit.
2. Read a portion of the scripture with them. Don’t take too much of their time. Remember
they are not like you. They are baby Christian yet. If you make it a burden they may
not give you time when you come next.
3. Let them have a goal and target. (how they want to be in five years)
4. Encourage them to be active in Church activities.
V. Divorce
To get these people back together, is not easy. First as a facilitator you need to count the cost.
Don’t start anything that you can’t finish. You need to make sure that you are ready to spend
more effort, resource, time and even be ready to handle accusation and ridicules. But, if you
are able to succeed, then you have done what this generation will never forget you; For God
will be so happy with you. They will never forget you in the sense that, if this couple are blessed
with children, any time they look at the children they will remember you. You can also look at
these children and be proud.
VI. Widow
These are people who are passing through a lot. Silently they are traumatized. First, you have
to make sure they get out of their trauma.
They need a lot of encouragement and prayers. See to engage them in some exercise for more
information. But no facilitator should be visiting them alone no matter what. No need to talk
about widowers because, normally they just get married after one or two years.

49
B. YOUTHS
These are a group of people who want an answer not stories. All they care about is how to make
and because of that, they always look for short cut on how to make it now. They are in a hurry
to be rich, they want to be famous, they want cars, they have big dreams, they want an office,
they want people serving them. Getting these people to being small is a challenge since they
want to be rich quick and they compute with others. Try to get them to start small perhaps
something in SALT savings. Help them set their mind to accept the fact that success start small
with relevant examples and stories.
This group of people are around 18-49. They only consider success as having office with a car,
a fancy house and husband/wife. It takes much patience and persistence to get them to see what
is true and success.
I. Male
Male youths are always concerned with how to establish themselves to be responsible parents.
With this in mind, they are always open to where there is success. With success in mind, it is
hard for them to pursue one career except when it’s giving them the version of their success.
Therefore, you need to know that sustainable development does not support giving someone
free things or easy growth. Because of that, you need to know that their mindset is what you
will be struggling with. Changing youth’s mindset is hard; it is gradually and it is also logically
but it is the best time to reach them. You always have to be relevant, current, energetic, spiritual
and very practical. Share your testimonies this can help the youth a lot. (As a disciple, you must
have a story of your encounter with Christ, or how God see you through in a complicated
situation).
a. Seeking for Job
Job is always the top headline of youth concern. Until they get satisfactied, they will never be
settled for less. Because of their desperation for success, they will do anything but work hard
and start small. Therefore. Try to change their mindset from much concern with government
job as the only successful job to other job creativity. Have them focus on God which is the only
solution and the ultimate success the world has ever known.
b. Seeking for wife
When you meet with a youth whose concern is to find a wife, encourage him to seek a Godly
and trusted lady and be prayerful.
c. Seeking for an admission
Try to encourage him to look up to God maybe God has something for him somewhere.
Encourage him to pray also since there is nothing God cannot do.
Make sure the person knows why he wants to go to tertiary institution. Most of them only wants
to go to school to have certificate to have a job. Truly some of them have opportunity to make
more money than if they go to school but they need some coaching. Therefore, provide that
coaching in a kind way.
d. Seeking for business
❖ Encourage them to start small. The bigger the start the bigger the fall.
❖ Make them to understand there is no business without challenge. In fact, the
greater the challenge, the greater the hero
❖ Help them to take a calculated risk.
50
❖They have to trust God
❖They have to have integrity to have their customers trust them.
❖They have to be prayerful
❖Make sure they have a record keeping (Ask them to show you their record
keeping often)
❖ Teach them budgeting
❖ Make sure they are dedicated and committed to build a foundation for success.
e. Confused
This is a stage where by a youth is confused after so many trials and failure. At this stage, they
consider God as being far away and partial God and not carrying maybe not loving as his word
says he is. This group of youth need discipleship the most. Encourage them to start small and
be so committed and dedicated.
C. FEMALE
Just like the male youths, the female youths have the same challenges. Seeking for Job, Seeking
for Husband, seeking for school, seeking for business, Confused and many others. The same
principles can be applied except no SALT staff is allow to visit her alone NO MATTER
WHAT. Only in the case whereby she is in some public places such as hospital, or in a church.
But even the rest of the public place, no visitation with just a SALT staff and her. If it is so
necessary that you must go and no another staff is available to go with you, let your wife follow
you.
I. Children
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Proverb 22:6
Disciplined children requires the following
❖ A person who is very energetic.
❖ Who does not care to be messy (children can make a stain on your clothes).
❖ A person who likes having fun.
❖ Who is not too big in his own eyes.
❖ Who does not tolerate stupidity.
❖ Who is full with God’s knowledge. Whatever you tell them stick to their mind and
create a mindset in them. This person has to make sure God’s words fill mouth and
mind so that every fun time, serious time, and important time is to be about God, good
moral influence, and spiritual.
At this stage, the most important thing to know is, their parents are the most superior to
everybody on earth, their teacher is all-knowing than anyone (Even their parents except their
parents are the teacher) and their spiritual guide (Sunday school teacher, Salt teacher, living
hope teacher) is more trusted than anybody on earth.
You can see that they trust you so much, feed them with scriptural truth. Some of the
children are fast learners and some are slow learners. When you discover the fast learners,
separate them from the slow learners this is to avoid boredom to the fast learners and when you
became boring to them, since they are not learning anything from you, they create their own
learning. That learning they create for themselves could be something that will affect them
negatively. Therefore, try to get them in a different level something higher.

51
II. Business
At this age level, try to have them to learn some kind of skill acquisition then make sure you
give them good mind set so that they will grow with it.
THESE SECTION APPLY TO ALL
The table in this section will guide you on what to do at what time with your client just follow
to the instructions gradually. It is clear that in Nigeria, people struggle with these few things.
1. Record keeping.
2. Planning for the future
3. Budgeting
4. Loan (Credit/debt)
5. The mindset of “I must go to school to be somebody.” (School is good but to get certificate
for job or to get knowledge? 90 or 99% of Nigerians go to school because that is the only way
they can become big in their own thinking. But knowledge without direction or intelligence
without wisdom is destruction. That is why Nigeria is in a big mess because we celebrate
intelligence not education not wisdom that gives creativity or freedom but slavery of mind.

1. Ask them to read a portion of scripture
Every time you talk on phone or one on one. (The Book of John is good to start wit if you don’t
know where to start.) You can ask them to read a chapter every day or more if possible. It is
good to know that a genuine person who truly wants to grow spiritually will ask you many
questions. Be ready to answer them correctly, failure to answer appropriately may lead into
syncretism, split level Christianity or even lead them to other faith.
2. Ask them about the portion they read and discuss with them
This book of the Law shall not depart out of your mouth but you shall meditate on it day and
night so that you will be careful to do according to all that is written in it. (Joshua 1:8)
This is a call for accountability, you need to keep them accountable often. This is also to
encourage them to apply what they read in the Bible to their day-to-day life and activities.
Studying the word of God alone cannot help but applying it to our daily life will make a
tremendous impact. Therefore, teach them to use it in all aspect of their lives.
3. Ask them about their salvation
It is good to know their level of faith and commitment. One way to find out is through the way
they talk about life after. A carnal man who claims to be Christian will talk to you about
salvation in doubt like “Maybe I will get to be with Christ when I die, I wish I will see Jesus,
Heaven is predestined to those 144,000 saints I don’t know if I will be there, no one knows
what will happen on the judgment day if I will be proven righteous or guilty.” And many others.
4. Ask them to pray on a specific situation
Teach them to have a prayer list. This can help them to stay focus and committed and specific
in their request. You ask them regularly questions like: Did you pray, how was your prayer
time today/last night, what are the contents of your prayers? (If they have a list they should
remember? This will help in the aspect of accountability.
5. Encourage them to have a goal and target
You need to set a goal for yourself as a disciple maker then encourage them to have a goal
themselves. To have a target and help them to be committed to it. It is not easy to stick to it but
let them understand the way to spiritual maturity is hard but once you get there its sweet.

CHAPTER SIX
TIME MANAGEMENT IN DISCIPLESHIP
Time management is indeed a problem of Africans. There is a billboard in Abuja I like so much
that says, “African Time doesn’t exist on the clock.” At one of the EYN LCBs in Nyanya, they
include on their signboard time like this “Service time is 9AM Jesus Time”. A disciple who
cannot manage his time, is never a serious one. The first time I started working with SALT in
Nigeria, our time to resume office is 8:00 AM Monday to Friday. But I have problems keeping
to time I will come mostly 15 minutes late or more every day until they increased the time to
8:15 and then I started to come 9AM then, they called me and explained that when they said 8
they really mean 8 and so I did struggle to learn how to follow the time which greatly helped
me. When we hired more staff and assigned work to each one of them, they will see me in the
office always on time and that encourages them that I have my respect from them.
For a leader to manage time effectively, some areas like risk and issue of management,
project planning, managing senior stakeholders, ensuring the quality of the end product, and
leading and motivating the team. Delegating lower level administrative tasks and detailed
planning is good for a leader to watch with care.
Some leaders do have a journal/time table to keep help them keep track of time and activities.
This is an overview of the year, month, week, and day. Go over it once a week to see how time
is spent. What needs to increase? What needs to decrease? Observe which "time wasters" can
be eliminated.
✓ Use the appointment book to keep track of places to go, people to see, and the main
things that needs to be done during the day. This Journal/time table can be used to
ascertain what is worthy even though in Nigeria it is not easy to control the people
coming. I remember how I kept hiding from people in the northeast when I want to have
time for myself. A leader in Nigeria will have more than enough visitors and friends
and family. But still try as Jesus in many occasions withdrew from people to pray or
to rest.
✓ Avoid procrastination. That is one of the most dangerous things that create laziness.
“Have a well-organized "to do" list. These are the details of the appointment book. Make a list
with columns like: what needs to be done, Time needed to get it done and Priority of tasks.”33
Concentrate on the priorities first thing first. It is easy to start one thing and jump into another
in Nigeria for there are a lot of emergences that arises but still keep the priority first.
If you have a carnal facilitator you will have a carnal group. If you have a Spiritual Facilitator
you will have a Spiritual group.

CHAPTER SEVEN
SUGGESTION FOR MUSLIM EVANGELISM.
How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe
in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
(Romans 10:14)

These categories of people need to be evangelized first and then discipled. They are not
qualified for discipleship at their stage. Therefore, here are some few steps to consider for
evangelism.
Jesus’ teaching, which is known as the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5-7 is full of
lesson on peace and how to live good with others. Of the Ten Commandments that were given
to man, 6 of them are laws between human and his fellow human beings. Relating with others
in a Godly manner is paramount even when they are so hostile and are the persecutors. It is our
duty to show love to the outside world and to love one another. A new commandment I give
unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this
shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. (John 13: 34-35)
There is no doubt, if we want to be effective in carrying out the gospel, we must develop
a good relationship with the non-Christians.
Before looking at some steps, here are few things we need to know
1. Never wait for the right time rather, every time is a right time.
67
2. Accept them as they are and try to change them (Even though it’s God’s)
3. Don’t feel guilty when they don’t listen to you or accept what you have to say. It is a
gradual process.
4. It’s not by force. Don’t try to force them or be mad when they refuse whatever you have
tried to show them.
5. Sometimes people of other faiths can respond in ridicule so be patient.
6. You must be prayerful person. “Pray for the people you are sharing the gospel to”34
7. You must be Dedicated and committed. Therefore, one must know Jesus and be saved.
8. Be patient and don’t be easily angered.
9. Be warned, they can be hostile.
10. Remember that no matter how evil or corrupt they are, they also need salvation.
The person must be saved: The first and the most important one in this research is that, a
Christian must be saved. There is no two ways about it, except if the person is willing to face
what the seven sons of Sceva did. Looking at this passage in the NIV put in an interesting way,
it reads:
Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the
Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of
the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” Seven sons of Sceva, a
Jewish chief priest, were doing this. One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I
know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” Then the man who had the evil spirit
jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran
out of the house naked and bleeding. NIV Acts 19:13-16
Even though it is easy to develop good relationship with them, there is no benefit if the
relationship is not to share Christ with them. One cannot be effective in sharing the gospel with
people of other faith except the person is deeply rooted in Christ and his Word. This point is
almost the same with what Billy Graham wrote online, “Maybe you’re afraid to share your
faith because you don’t know what to say. Or maybe you’re sharing the Gospel but nothing is
happening; people aren’t committing their lives to Christ.”35 When we have a good relationship
with them, it’s easy to have something to say. Even though, a person who is deeply rooted will
never lack words to say. “…do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is
given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit” (Mark 13:11).
Understand their culture: “Getting to know the other faiths by studying the background of
these faiths and their worldview. This will help to understand the faith, understand what they
believe, why they do what they do.”36 This is very crucial. Paul is a good example in this:
“Then Paul stood up before the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I see that in every way
you are very religious. For as I walked around and examined your objects of worship, I even
found an altar with the inscription: To an unknown God. Therefore, what you worship as
something unknown, I know proclaim to you.” Paul contextualize evangelism approach very
well and there is no way one can contextualize without knowing them.
Be happy: Let the joy of salvation be manifest in you. The person who is in Christ is never a
complainer but in “Every circumstance giving thanks” (1 Thess. 5:18). This doesn’t look like
an important point and many Christians overlook it. Yet, we tend to use this common slogan
that says, “If a person promised you an expensive shoe look at the one. he/she is wearing first

68
before believing in the promise” This is same with everyone. If really there is joy in salvation
let them see it in you. This doesn’t mean prosperity but contentment. A person who is in Christ
is contented and has a million reasons to appreciate God, a person who is far from salvation
has a million reasons to blame God. Happiness attracts people to oneself. Many people believe
that wicked people don’t look happy if that is true then how can someone relate with you? It
can’t be possible.
Respect: The next is to respect the people of other faith. Be humble to them. “If the Christian
do not respect person from the other faith, he will surely find it hard if not impossible to bring
gospel across to him.” 37If you looked down on someone you can’t contextualize, you will end
up having that turn completely away from everything including what may be helpful. Many
Churches in Northern Africa died because when the missionaries came with the gospel they
failed to contextualize; even after the people accept Christianity it was a foreign religion to
them. Therefore, when Islam came and contextualized, they allowed them with their culture,
(Respect their culture) it became more acceptable to them than the foreign culture.
Then preach. Engage with them in a healthy discussion. Not argument, not fighting, not
condemning, but “Engaging with the people of other faiths in intelligent discussion;”38 We
must be ready to speak all the time. Don’t wait for a good time but make all times a good time.
“Delay is dangerous,” therefore, avoid procrastination. Speak the gospel at all the time at all
cost.

Tell them about God’s plan for salvation, His peace and His life everlasting. John 3:16 is
a good example.

Talk about God’s remedy on the cross. His crucifixion, death and resurrection (1 Peter 2:24).

Tell them that the gospel is not limited to any specific people “But as many as received Him,
to them He gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12).

Show those close to you that you care. Spend times with them, help meet their needs and
offer to listen when they have problems.”39
Know that everyone will be judged “We recognize that all religions, including our own, stand
under the judgment of God and we acknowledge our own sins against others both in the
historical past and in our own times. These realities keep us from condemnation of others while
they encourage our own commitment to the Christ who forgives and reconciles.”40
The purpose of developing relationship with these categories of people include:
✓ To present them with the good news about Christ
“We do so in the faith that, through God’s Spirit, the Church is a sign and means of God’s
intention for the wholeness and unity of humankind and of all creation.”41
✓ “To develop spiritual character formation towards the right relationship with other
faiths, To create opportunities for practical skills, especially as witnesses for Christ.”42

✓ To help other Christians know that relating with other faith is part of our calling.
✓ To help understand that, “We are called to work with others in our pluralistic societies
for the well‑being of our world and for justice, peace, and the sustainability of
creation.”43

It is good to know that many Christians are living in absolute ignorance of the truth that we are
to share Christ no matter what but how do we do that? Except we have a good relationship with
the people of other faith. Some statement made by the General Assembly Council Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.) in the year 1972 on “Interfaith Mission” which is relevant to this research
work I quote.
As much as I can, [with people of other religions] I should meet friendship with
friendship, hostility with kindness, generosity with gratitude, persecution with
forbearance, truth with agreement, and error with truth. I should express my faith with
humility and devotion as the occasion requires, whether silently or openly, boldly or
meekly, by word or by deed. I should avoid compromising the truth on the one hand
and being narrow‑minded on the other. In short, I should always welcome and accept
these others in a way that honors and reflects the Lord’s welcome and acceptance of
me.44
Again, this group of people filled with the Holy Spirit add another statement that
In the spirit of Jesus Christ, we are called to maintain a respectful presence with people
of other faiths. We commit ourselves to meet such persons with gentleness and humility
and to seek to learn more about the worshiping practices and faiths that they represent
as a way of deepening our own. And we acknowledge that we are called, by the God
who created us and the world in which we live, to remain faithful in our proclamation
of the gospel in Jesus Christ, and to work with others irrespective of their practices and
faith commitments, toward a world marked by justice and peace and in which the whole
creation is nurtured and protected.45
This should be the heart of every Christians. Out of the 7 billion people in the world, Christians
are only about shows 2.2 billion. But if every Christian will develop a good relationship with
people of other faith in the next five years, the whole world will hear the gospel. But instead,
we consider them as vampires which some of them are but still many Christians are not trying
at all. I challenge reader to start today and encourage other Christians to start as well.
Interfaith Dialogue refers to “Cooperative, constructive, and positive interaction between
people of different religious traditions i.e. faiths and/or spiritual or humanistic beliefs, at both
the individual and institutional levels.46
Importance of inter-faith interaction
“Dhalla, President of the Foundation for Unity of Religions and Enlightenment of Citizenship
(FUREC), said, "Dialogue is not only desirable but necessary as it will help to clear up
misconceptions about another person's religion."47 If a person whose religion has no authentic

source can make this comment, I think the Christian leaders should also consider it. Which is
another good opportunity to present Christ.
Inter-faith dialogue is an eye opener. I remember one of the inter-faith dialogues that took
place in Borno between the Christian leaders and Muslims leaders. The Muslim leader did not
have an answer to the question, they had asked him about the way Boko Haram and other
Islamic terrorists sprout out of Islam, which any religion in the world has more record of
terrorism? The imam said “Just like your ladies don’t listen to your sermon about decency but
walk half naked on the street, this is how Islamic fanatics don’t listen to us.” This at least
opened my eyes to see what they think about our ladies.
Another importance is that it makes one to study and to come closer to God.

Inter-faith dialogue or interaction is good only when the disciple is Knowledgeable,

Wise, Responsible, Authoritative, Competent, Just and Courageous.
Be well-informed, be an intellectual person, have rational aptitude,
A Christian leader must be a conflict resolution person. This is not easy in this dispensation.
For Muslim, whatever you do Islam is first. Therefore, giving them a chance is to peacefully
give them everything which will make them so happy. But God is merciful when his people
remain obedient to his words, He always is faithful.
A Christian leader should not only teach peace, but be able to demonstrate peace in everything
he does. Just remember that even before crucifixion when the soldiers and the pharisees came
to arrest Jesus. When Jesus asked them, "Who is it you want? "Jesus of Nazareth," they replied.
"I am He," Jesus said…..When Jesus said, "I am He," they drew back and fell to the ground.
(John 18:4-6). Just imagine how just His words pushed those strong men to the ground. What
then if He would fight? What kind of a weapon will he use against those people? It will be
something less than his words since they were not able to withstand his words. But the master
Jesus, obediently gave himself away to them just to give them salvation.
