How does the video influence your opinion about conflict, describe three
possible causes of conflict and what are the needed skills involve in conflict resolution.
“Conflict does not go along a simple linear path” (Mayer,2002). Conflict is
the result of incompatible needs and wants and the difference between ideals and opinions. Before watching the video, I thought conflict only sprung from hatred, envy, misunderstanding, miscommunication, and violence. As a child growing up where war and bloodshed is very rampant, it is only right for me to think that the root of conflict arises from such points. However, I was enlightened that conflict comes in many forms- it can be constructive, positive, and negative. In constructive conflict, disagreement is not seen as a situation where one person wins and the other loses, but it is where common goal and team spirit coincides. On the note of positive conflict, it is where the birth of better ideas and new approaches happen, long standing problems resurfaces and dealt with, and the tension of conflict stimulates interests and activity. On the other hand, negative conflict makes people feel defeated, demeaned and the distance between people increases. There are five main possible causes of conflict, three of which is Interests or the difference between what I want and what you want. Second is Values, or the difference between what is important to you and what is important to me. Third is Understanding, or the difference between what I understand and what you understand. In resolving conflicts, we must consider the conflict in which we have been involved, and identify the various aspects of the conflict. There are five skills needed to resolve a conflict- stop the conflict, understand it, act at the right time, look for win-win situations, and check results. Conflict resolution is the process of building bridges between individuals or communities and creating opportunities for developing new relationships. Sorting out dispute between parties has never been easy, but with the right amount of knowledge and understanding, there is still a ray of hope for a better and healthier community.
