Troubleshooting Guide

This troubleshooting guide will provide you with information about Star Wars® Jedi Knight®: Jedi
Academy™. You will find solutions to common problems that were encountered while running the game
in the Windows 98, Millennium Edition (ME), 2000, and XP operating systems with OpenGL 1.4 and
DirectX 9.0a.

that you may encounter while playing the Jedi Academy computer video game. LucasArts makes no

Supported Operating Systems


To be able to play Jedi Academy, you must have Windows 98, 98SE, Millennium Edition (ME), 2000, or
XP installed and configured correctly and your computer hardware must be OpenGL 1.4 and DirectX 9.0a
compatible.

According to Microsoft, Windows 95 has entered its non-supported phase as December 2001. Because of
this, Jedi Academy doesn’t support this operating system. Windows 98 also entered its non-supported
phase as of June 2003. Because of this, several hardware manufacturers are no longer developing
drivers for this operating system.

If you are running Windows 2000 or XP, you must have local Administrator or Power User rights to
properly install the game. Only local Administrator rights will allow you to update DirectX in these
operating systems.

Minimum System Requirements


Computer: 100% DirectX 9.0a compatible computer required.

CPU: Pentium III 450 MHz or faster CPU required.


Pentium III or Athlon class 600 MHz or faster CPU recommended.

Memory: 128 MB RAM required. 256 MB RAM recommended.


Graphics Card: 32 MB OpenGL 1.4 compatible PCI or AGP 3D Hardware Accelerator required.

Sound Card: 16-bit sound card required.

CD-ROM: Quad Speed IDE or SCSI CD-ROM required.

Input Device: Keyboard and mouse required. Joystick supported.

DirectX: Microsoft DirectX 9.0a is included on this CD. You will be prompted to install
DirectX during the installation of this game if this or a more recent version
is not already properly installed on your system. Please refer to the
Installation and DirectX Setup sections of this Troubleshooting Guide for
more information about DirectX.

NOTE: DirectX may require the "latest" updates for your operating system.
This may also include the latest drivers for your particular motherboard,
sound and video hardware.

Installation: Installation requires 1.3 GB of free hard drive space. It is recommended


that you have at least an additional 200 MB of free space available after
installing the game for the Windows swap/page file and save games.

Multiplayer Support
Pentium III 700 MHz or faster recommended for Dedicated Server.

Local Area Network Play: Supports up to 16 players via Local Area Network.
Internet Play: Supports up to 16 players via 56Kbps or faster connection to the Internet.
Dedicated Server: Broadband connection (DSL/Cable modem or better) required for
Internet hosting.

Jedi Academy was designed to run under Windows 98, Millennium (ME), 2000, or XP with OpenGL 1.4
and DirectX 9.0a. If the game unexpectedly freezes up, returns you to your desktop, or if you experience
any other severe problems, you should try to properly shut down Windows and reboot your computer. (As
a rule, you should never turn off your computer while the hard drive is active.) This will help prevent
possible problems related to the error that you have experienced. It is especially important to reboot your
computer before trying any of the troubleshooting tips included in this guide or before attempting to restart
the game.

NOTE: If your computer reboots into Safe Mode, go to Shut Down Windows and choose Restart the
Computer. This will put you back into Windows’ normal operating mode.

Why Can’t I Get The Launcher To Respond?


 The Jedi Academy CD may have been removed.
 Your CD-ROM drive may have stopped responding.
 There may be a hardware conflict in your system.
 The Jedi Academy CD may be scratched or dirty.
 Your computer may not be 100% DirectX 9.0a compatible.
Please consult DirectX Setup (Section 9) or CD-ROM Drive Issues (Section 7) in this Troubleshooting
Guide for more information.
I Cannot Launch Jedi Academy. What Do I Do Now?
 Check to see how much room is available on your hard drive to make sure that you have enough
free space for Jedi Academy to run. It is recommended that you have at least 200 MB of free space after
installing the game for the Windows swap/page file and save games.
 Check to see if your Windows desktop color palette is set to High Color (16-bit). On some video
cards, 32-bit desktop settings may cause problems in Jedi Academy. Please consult Video Issues
(Section 5) for more information.
 Check to see if you have any other applications running, such as memory managers, screen
savers, or virus protection programs. Please refer to Should I have Other Programs Running in the
Background in this section for more information.
 Check to see if you have OpenGL compatible drivers. Failure in launching the game may occur
because of driver incompatibilities. Please refer to Video Issues (Section 5) for information on OpenGL.
 Check DirectX Setup (Section 9) in this Troubleshooting Guide for directions on how to find out if
DirectX supports your computer hardware.
 Check the Jedi Academy CD to see if it is dirty or scratched. The CD-ROM drive may be having
trouble reading the CD. Please check CD-ROM Drive Issues (Section 7) for more information.
 Make sure that your CD-ROM drive letter didn’t change since installing Jedi Academy. If it did,
you will need to uninstall the game and reinstall it with the new drive letter. Make sure to choose Yes
when prompted to keep your player and configuration files when uninstalling, so you do not lose your
progress.
 If none of the suggestions above help, you may have a corrupted installation. Try uninstalling,
then reinstalling Jedi Academy.

What Should I Do If My Computer Goes To A Black Screen Or Locks Up?


If you end up at a black screen or the game appears to lock up, please press ALT-F4 before trying
anything else. If this fails, press CTRL-ALT-DEL once and choose END TASK on Jedi Knight: Jedi
Academy, which should take you back to the desktop. Windows 2000 and XP users will need to click on
Task Manager, and then choose END TASK. If you do not see a dialog box after pressing CTRL-ALT-
DEL, press ENTER twice and this should take you back to the desktop. Then restart your computer and
try running the game again.

Why Do I Keep Hearing Static In Jedi Academy?


 Your sound card may not be fully DirectX compatible. Please look at DirectX Setup (Section 9) in
this Troubleshooting Guide for information about how to check for DirectX compatibility.
 You may need to update the drivers for your sound card.
 Your volume may be turned up too loud in Windows.
 Your amplified speakers may be plugged into speaker-out on your sound card.
Please consult Sound Issues (Section 6) in this Troubleshooting Guide for more information.

Should I Have Other Programs Running In The Background?


Generally, we have found that it is not a good idea to run any other programs in the background while
playing Jedi Academy. Please turn off any active screen savers while running this game, as they may
interrupt the game and cause problems. Various video, sound, or memory problems may occur if other
programs are running, including virus-detection utilities. You may need to disable or close programs that
start automatically when Windows is started, such as the Microsoft Office Toolbar and the Live!Ware
Creative Launcher. Some of these programs display icons on your system tray. If you have icons on your
taskbar, right-click on each of them and select the option to disable, unload, or close them before running
Jedi Academy. The next time you start your computer, these items will load once more and the icons will
return. If you cannot disable them from the taskbar and you experience problems running Jedi Academy,
we recommend that you consult Windows Help for information on how to remove shortcuts or how to
keep other programs from running in the background.
Why Can’t I Task Switch When Playing Jedi Academy?
Task switching is disabled when playing Jedi Academy in full screen mode. In order to task switch, you
must change Full Screen to Off in the Video Setup screen.

Running On Low-End Systems


When running Jedi Academy on a low-end system, you may experience some stuttering in the sound and
graphics. This usually happens if other programs are running or your system resources are low. Freeing
up system resources may improve performance. Check Performance (Section 4) in this troubleshooting
guide for more performance tips.

Power Management
If your computer is equipped with a Power Management feature, you may want to disable it. Please
consult your computer's documentation or the manufacturer for assistance in doing this. When Power
Management is enabled, the following problems may occur:
 The game may crash or go to a blue screen when sleep mode activates.
 The Windows mouse cursor may appear when the computer returns from sleep mode.
 The monitor may go to a black screen while you are playing or when sitting at one screen for long
periods of time.

Desktop Color Palette


If you experience problems running the game, we recommend that you set your desktop Color Palette or
Colors to High Color (16-bit). When running Jedi Academy with your desktop set to a color palette other
than 16-bit, some video cards may experience problems launching the game or you may see graphic
corruption. In most cases, switching to High Color (16-bit) solves these problems. To change your
desktop color palette and resolution:
 Right-click on the desktop where there are not any icons.
 Choose Properties from the shortcut menu.
 Click on the Settings tab.
 Windows 98/ME/2000: Look at Colors.
 Windows XP: Look at Color Quality.
 Choose High Color (16-bit).
 Click OK to close this window.
 If your computer prompts you to, restart.

Windows 2000 and XP Issues

Administrative Rights
Some of the steps noted in this Troubleshooting Guide regarding making adjustments to your system,
such as setting up your monitor, will not be available for you to modify unless you are logged onto the
system with Administrative Rights. Without these rights, you may be unable to select the option because it
is grayed out. You will be unable to install DirectX unless you are logged on with Administrative Rights.

Keyboard Functionality In Windows 2000 and XP


When playing Jedi Academy on a Windows 2000 or XP system, pressing ALT, CTRL or SHIFT multiple
times may bring up a Windows dialog box while playing the game. This is a function of Accessibility
options. For information regarding disabling this feature, please consult Windows Help.

Out Of Virtual Memory Error In Windows 2000 or XP


When playing Jedi Academy on a 128MB system with Windows 2000 or XP, you may see an Out of
Virtual Memory Error while playing or when exiting this game. This occurs in part because the minimum
memory requirement for Windows 2000 and XP is 64MB, leaving only 64 MB to run the game. If this
occurs, we recommend that you exit the game and reboot your computer to clear the memory before
playing again. If the problem persists, you may want to adjust your Page file settings to allow Windows to
start the game with more virtual memory. Consult Windows Help for information on how to modify your
Page file settings.

-3- Installation
Installing Jedi Academy
Please check the amount of available hard drive space on your system before installing Jedi Academy.
The two options, Automatic and Custom, require 1.2 GB of free hard drive space. We recommend that
you have at least an additional 200 MB of free space available for the Windows swap/page file and save
games. If you have too little free space on your hard drive after installing Jedi Academy, you may be
unable to start the program.

Automatic installs to the default directory, C:\Program Files\LucasArts\Star Wars Jedi Knight Jedi
Academy, does not put a shortcut on your desktop and may install DirectX 9.0a during installation if it is
not already installed on your system.

Custom installation will prompt you for an installation location, asks where to place shortcuts in the Start
Menu and if you want a shortcut on your desktop, and prompts you to install DirectX 9.0a if it is not
already installed on your system.

Available Hard Drive Space on Drive C


Installation requires some space on your C drive even when you are installing to a different hard drive.
This is due to a limitation in InstallShield, which requires uninstall information to be put on the C drive.
Because of this, you may see an error during installation stating that you do not have enough free space
to install the game when there is ample room available in the install directory. If this occurs, you will need
to free at least 10 MB on the C drive prior to installation.

CD Ejected During Install


If the CD is removed from the drive during installation at any time other than when prompted to switch to
CD2, the installation may be incomplete or the game may crash to the desktop. When this occurs, you
may be unable to reinstall through the launcher. To reinstall the game, go to the GameData directory on
the CD and run Setup. This will properly install the game.

Installing DirectX 9.0a


During the custom installation of Jedi Academy you may be prompted to install DirectX 9.0a if this or more
recent version are not already properly installed on your system. Important: You must have
Administrator rights in order to properly install DirectX on a Windows 2000 or XP system.

Shortcut Does Not Appear On The Desktop


The following are a few reasons why the shortcut to Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy may not
appear on your desktop after installing the game:
 When multiple users use one computer, each person may have a separate profile. If your system
is configured this way and you choose to create a shortcut to the game during installation, it may not
appear on your desktop. If this occurs, just go to the Windows Desktop folder and copy the shortcut to
your current desktop or copy the shortcut from the Start Menu to your desktop.
 You may have chosen Automatic installation. This option does not create a shortcut on your
desktop.

Unable to Launch the Game after Installation


If you are experiencing problems trying to launch the program after a successful installation, please try
the following:
 Re-boot the system and try launching the program again.
 Make sure you have the retail “Play” disc in a local CD/DVD drive.
 Close all other running applications, especially things such as Clean Sweep, anti-virus software,
ZoneAlarm, and CD burning software such as Nero or EZ CD creator.
 If you have more than one local CD/DVD drive, try all drives.
 If you have a Virtual CD Drive installed, make sure it is disabled.
 Make sure you have updated firmware for your optical drive AND that you have the latest
motherboard drivers available.
 Make sure you wait for the “Play” disc authentication after the program launches. It can take up to
one-half minute or more for initial disc authentication.

If you have tried all of the above and are still having trouble, please generate an analysis file for
submission to the SecuROM tech support group so we may be of further assistance. The analysis file
contains important information to help us analyze the program launch issues you are experiencing. After
successfully creating the file, the necessary data will be exported and stored in an “AnalysisLog.sr0” file.
Please perform the following steps:

 Make sure the “Play” disc is in a local CD/DVD drive.


 Locate the game executable. It is named JASP.EXE. This file is located in the Gamedata folder,
which is located in the Gamedata folder.
 Right click” (right hand mouse button) on the executable and a dialog window will appear.
 Choose “Launch Analysis” from the menu and release the mouse.
 Shortly, a disclaimer window will appear.
 To proceed, please click on the “Yes” button.
 The application will now generate an AnalysisLog.sr0 file within the root of your C:\ partition (hard
drive).
 Another dialog will appear to signify the successful generation of the analysis file. Click the “OK”
button to finish.
 If you have access to a compression utility program such as WinZip, please compress the file
(some email programs will corrupt the .sr0 file during transmission).
 Please email us the .sr0 file or zip folder with a description of your issue with as much detail as
possible. Be sure to include things you have already tried.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. Please accept our sincerest apology for any
inconvenience you have incurred. Are goal is to solve your launch issues as efficiently and quickly as
possible.

Disclaimer: The ability to generate the analysis file has been developed with your personal interest in
mind to check for possible hardware and/or software incompatibility on your PC. To shorten the analysis
time, system information is collected (similar to the Microsoft's msinfo32.exe program). Data will be
compared with our knowledge base to determine hardware and/or software conflicts. Submitting the
analysis file is totally voluntary. The collected data is for evaluation purposes only and is not used in any
other manner.

Uninstall Warning
When you uninstall Jedi Academy, you may receive a warning stating that the uninstaller may not have
removed everything. Here are a couple reasons why you may see this message:
 You may have chosen to keep your saved games and configuration file when you uninstalled the
game. In this case, the uninstaller will not remove the LucasArts, Star Wars Jedi Knight Jedi Academy,
and GameData folders. You will need to manually remove these folders.
 You may have installed other LucasArts programs on your computer after installing Jedi
Academy. The LucasArts folder will not be removed from your computer because other LucasArts games
are stored there.
Can I Move The Star Wars Jedi Knight Jedi Academy Folder After I Install?
If you wish to move the Star Wars Jedi Knight Jedi Academy folder to a new folder, uninstall first, then
reinstall to the new location. Make sure to choose Yes when prompted to keep your saved games and
configuration files when uninstalling, so you do not lose your progress. Simply moving the folder will
cause the game to stop working. If you have saved games, you will need to move the GameData folder
from the previous installation folder to the new location where you install Jedi Academy.

Performance Issues In Jedi Academy
When running Jedi Academy on the minimum required system, you may experience the following issues:
 There may be stuttering in the voice and sound.
 Saber throw may not work correctly.
 There may be pauses or hitching during the opening movie.
 Transitions may take a long time.
 There may be slow downs or stuttering during gameplay.

This occurs most frequently when other programs are running or if your system resources are below 70%.
Freeing up system resources may improve performance in the game. For more information, please refer
to the Close All Other Programs Before Running Jedi Academy section below.

Improving Performance In Jedi Academy


The following are a few suggestions that may free up system resources and improve performance in Jedi
Academy.

To run Jedi Academy with optimal performance:


 No other programs should be running in the background.
 System resources should be at least 85% free.
 There should be at least 200 MB of free hard disk space after installation.
 Your system should pass all tests run by the system analyzer, which is located in the help menu
on the Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy launcher.

Adjusting Configuration Options for Optimal Performance


If you experience any performance problems when running Jedi Academy, you may want to make
adjustments based upon the amount of memory on your 3D graphics card and the speed of your system.
If you experience performance problems after adjusting settings in the Main Menu Setup screens, we
recommend that you adjust these settings based upon the following guidelines:

PIII 450MHz, 128 MB RAM, 32 MB Video Card


Video Quality = Fastest
Video Mode = 640x480
Color Depth = 16-bit
Geometry Detail = Low
Texture Detail = Low
Texture Quality = 16-bit
Texture Filter = Bilinear
Shadows = Off
Video Sync = Off
Dynamic Lights = Off
Wall Marks = Off
Sound Quality = Low
PIII 700MHz, 128 MB RAM, 32 MB Video Card
Video Quality = Normal
Video Mode = 800x600
Color Depth = 32-bit
Geometry Detail = High
Texture Detail = Medium
Texture Quality = 16-bit
Texture Filter = Bilinear
Shadows = Simple
Video Sync = Off
Dynamic Lights = On
Wall Marks = On

PIII 1GHz, 256 MB RAM, 64 or 128 MB Video Card


Video Quality = High Quality
Video Mode = 800x600
Color Depth = 32-bit

Texture Quality = 32-bit
Texture Filter = Trilinear
Shadows = Volumetric
Video Sync = Off
Dynamic Lights = On

Close All Other Programs Before Running Jedi Academy.


This includes virus scanning, word processing and Internet programs. Simply disabling these programs
will not always help, as the programs will still use resources that are needed to run Jedi Academy. If you
experience problems completely closing programs that are running, consult the documentation for those
individual programs. This is a common problem when trying to completely disable virus-scanning
software.

-5- Video Issues


This section of the Troubleshooting Guide will provide you with information on problems encountered with
specific video cards while running Jedi Academy. First check to see if your video card is listed in the
“supported 3D cards” section. If your video card is supported but you are unable to resolve any video
issues through this Troubleshooting Guide, please contact your hardware manufacturer for updated
OpenGL drivers. We have included a list of web sites for downloading drivers for your specific card at the
end of this document.

General Information and Troubleshooting Tips

OpenGL Compatibility
To run Jedi Academy, your video card driver must have OpenGL 1.4 compatible drivers. OpenGL is a
graphics API that was originally developed for professional workstations. It is now a standard API
(Application Programming Interface) for 3D hardware acceleration, utilized in several current 3D games
for the PC, including all Quake based games.
Could Not Load OpenGL Subsystem
You may see an error when attempting to start the game stating Could Not Load OpenGL Subsystem. If
this occurs, please check the following before trying to start the game:
 Make sure that your video card is supported. Please check the list of Supported 3D Cards and
Chipset in the Video Section of this troubleshooting guide to see if your card is listed.
 Make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card. Please check the Video Section of this
troubleshooting guide for the list of drivers that were tested with this game.
 If you are using a video card that supports dual monitors, the secondary monitor must be disabled
for OpenGL to initialize correctly.
 Make sure the 3D hardware acceleration is turned all the way up. You can check this by going
through Analyze your Computer, which is accessible through the Help menu in the launcher.

Low-end Graphics Card Issues


When using a low-end graphics card, you may experience the following issues when playing Jedi
Academy:
 Performance may be slow in some areas.
 You may see flickering graphics.
 Textures may be missing or they may display incorrectly.

Please check Adjusting Configuration Options For Optimal Performance in the Performance Section
of this Troubleshooting Guide for recommended settings if you experience any of the issues listed above.

1280x1024 and Higher Display Mode Settings


Some cards may have issues when running the game after selecting any 1280x1024 or higher Display
Mode in the Graphic Settings screen. You may experience severe hitching, a generally poor framerate, or
occasional lock ups or crashes. If any of these issues occur when playing Jedi Academy, please select a
lower resolution.

Crashing After Selecting 1280x1024 or Higher Display Mode


The game may crash to the desktop or display an error message when you attempt to start a game after
changing display modes in the setup screen. This occurs if your monitor or its driver does not support the
display setting you selected. If this occurs, we recommend that you start the game in Safe Mode by
selecting the Play Star Wars: Jedi Academy (Safe Mode) shortcut in your start menu. Safe Mode
restores the game to its default settings, which resets the display mode to 640x480. If you have modified
any controls, you will need to reassign them when you start the game again. You may need to select the
correct driver for your monitor or set your monitor to Plug and Play to select higher display modes.

16-bit vs. 32-bit Resolutions


Jedi Academy is optimized for 32-bit color. We have provided the option to play in 16-bit color in order to
accommodate users with lower end systems or graphics cards to enhance performance. When playing in
16-bit color, you may experience various graphics issues in the game. These issues include:
 You may see unsatisfactory color blending or blocky graphics, particularly in textures.
 There may be corruption at the seams of adjacent textures.
 Volumetric shadows do not display correctly in 16-bit display modes.
Jedi Academy defaults to a 16-bit color depth because some video cards will not display 32-bit color. For
best results go into the Graphic Settings screen in the in-game menu and select a 32-bit display mode.

Volumetric Shadows and 16-Bit Mode


Volumetric Shadows may not display properly in 16-Bit color mode. If you experience this problem, please
set your color mode to 32-Bit. Please note, however, that both Volumetric Shadows and 32-Bit Color
mode are only recommended for high performance computer systems.
Integrated Video Chipsets
When your computer has the video chip built on to the motherboard and the system only meets the
minimum requirement for RAM, you may experience various problems that occur because the video
chipset may use system memory for its video memory. You may experience the following issues:
 Jedi Academy may not run.
 Transitions may be slow.
 You may go to a black screen when task switching for a prolonged period of time.
 The frame rate may be slow and choppy.

Setting Up Your Monitor


If you experience any video problems, you should make sure that your monitor is set up correctly in the
display control panel. To do this:
 Right-click on the desktop where there are no icons.
 Choose Properties from the shortcut menu.
 Click on the Settings tab.
 Windows 98/ME/2000/XP: Click on Advanced…
 Windows 98: Click on Change… on the Monitor tab.
 Click on Next>
 Choose Display a list of all drivers…and click on Next>
 Windows ME: Click on Change… on the Monitor tab.
 Choose Specify the location of the Driver… and click on Next>
 Choose Display a list of all drivers…and click on Next>
 Windows 2000/XP: Click on Properties on the Monitor tab.
 Click on the Driver tab.
 Click on Update Driver…
 Windows 2000: Choose Display a list of all drivers…
 Click on Next>
 Windows XP: Choose Install from list or specific location…
 Choose Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install…
 Click on Next>
 Choose your monitor from the list. If you are unable to find your monitor listed, please consult the
manufacturer of your monitor to see if they have Windows drivers available for your monitor. This driver
allows Windows to set up the monitor correctly.
 If the correct monitor is not an option in Show Compatible Devices, click on Show All Devices,
scroll through the list of manufacturers, click on the correct one, then click on the name of your monitor. If
you are unable to find the correct monitor listed, go to standard monitor types at the top of this list and
select Plug and Play Monitor. This driver should work with most Windows compatible plug and play
monitors, and may correct issues with some older video cards.

Below is a list of the 3D video cards and chipsets that are supported in Jedi Academy. If you do not see
your card listed, but you do see a chipset that matches the one used on your card, you should be able to
play Jedi Academy.

NOTE: Some of the following cards will work with Jedi Academy, but exhibit certain issues listed below
under Specific Video Issues. When using any of these cards and chipsets, you should be using the
latest drivers for your card unless noted below. We have included a list of web addresses for downloading
drivers for your specific card at the end of this document.

The following chipsets did not meet the minimum specification or were found to have significant problems
when playing Jedi Academy. Some chipsets listed below may end up working if updated drivers become

Windows 2000 Issues


When using Windows 2000, your video card may be disabled for running 3D applications. This occurs
because the driver for your card may not have enabled 3D acceleration when the driver was installed.
Please refer to the Windows 2000 supported card list for the driver version that corrects this issue.
The following chipsets have a Windows 2000 driver that correct this issue:
 NVIDIA RIVA TNT2
 NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Ultra

Specific Video Issues

ATI Cards
When running Jedi Academy with an ATI card in Windowed mode, you may experience graphic corruption
or the screen may display upside down if you change the desktop resolution while playing the game.

ATI Radeon, Radeon 7500, or Radeon 8500


When running Jedi Academy with these chipsets, you may see severe corruption after selecting
2048x1536 Display Mode in the Video Setup screen. If this occurs, select a different display mode.

ATI Radeon
While using this chipset, switching to 1600x1200 resolution may result in the game displaying off-center
on the screen. If this does occur, please lower your resolution to a setting lower than 1600x1200.

ATI Radeon 7200


While playing the game with this chipset, some textures may be missing during some of the cinematics.
Please check the ATI website for updated drivers which may resolve this issue.

ATI Radeon 8500 and 9000


While playing the game with one of these chipsets in 16-bit mode, Force push may cause some textures
to be very bright. Changing to 32-bit mode corrects this issue.

ATI Rage 128


While using a card with one of these chipsets, you may experience performance problems in some areas
of the game. If this occurs, please try setting your setup options to “Fastest.”

Matrox G450/550
When using a card with these chipsets, you may experience the following issues in the game:
 You may experience intermittent lockups, or the game may lock up on the transition between the
opening movie and in game cinematic on some systems. Please check the Matrox Utility website for the
updated ICD driver that may address this issue.
 You may see intermittent flashing or flickering at bottom of the screen during cutscenes.

Matrox Parhelia
When using this card, you may experience the following issues:
 When the in-game resolution is set to a lower resolution than the desktop resolution with this card set
to Triple head mode, the game may not fit in the screen correctly. Choosing a different resolution, or
disabling Triple Head Mode corrects this issue.
 When the in-game resolution is set to 2400x600, the game may not fill the screen. Choosing a
different resolution, or disabling Triple Head Mode corrects this issue.
 If you encounter performance issues while using this chipset, please be sure to set volumetric
shadows to Off. You may also need to lower your video settings in the setup menu.

NVIDIA Riva TNT2


While using a card with one of these chipsets, you may experience performance problems in some areas
of the game. If this occurs, please try setting your setup options to “Fastest.”

NVIDIA GeForce256
If you are using a card with the nVIDIA GeForce256 chipset, you may experience flickering on-screen. If
you experience this issue:
 Press ESC to enter the Setup section of the main menu
 Click on Video
 Set the V-sync option to On.
 Apply changes before returning to the game.

NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX
If you are playing through the game with High Textures on, you may experience missing textures on
character models. Lowering your texture settings to medium or low should resolve this issue.

PowerVR Kyro and Kyro II


When using a card with this chipset with Texture Quality set to High with any 32-bit setting, you may see
intermittent graphical issues, such as the HUD, textures and characters may flash white. Lowering the
Texture Quality or selecting a 16-bit setting corrects this issue.

Fog may not render properly on these cards. This is a driver issue which may be addressed at a future
date.

Flickering textures may be seen on the lightsaber's colored reflection. If you experience this issue, please
turn Dynamic Lights off in the Advanced Video Setup menu:

 Press ESC to enter the Setup section of the main menu


 Click on the Setup tab at the top of the screen.
 Click on the Advanced Video tab on the left of the screen.
 Click on the Dynamic Lights option and set it to Off.

-6- Sound Issues


If you are unable to resolve sound problems through this troubleshooting guide, please contact your
hardware manufacturer for updated drivers.

DirectX Compatibility
Your sound card needs to be DirectX compatible to run Jedi Academy. Consult the DirectX Setup section
in this Troubleshooting Guide for information about how to check for DirectX support. If the driver for your
hardware is not DirectX compatible, check with your hardware manufacturer for updated drivers.

NOTE: If the Media Player is not installed, some of the following instructions will not work. If you want to
add it, please consult Windows Help for assistance. Just type Media Player in the index section and follow
the directions provided by Windows.

Static Or Distortion In Jedi Academy


You may hear occasional static in sound effects or sound distortion in the game if the volume is set too
high. This is especially noticeable on some older model cards. If this occurs, we recommend that you
lower the volume control in the game. If that does not correct the issue, you will need to lower the volume
control in Windows. Some older cards work best with the Windows Wave volume set to 50%.

Adjusting Sound Quality Settings in Jedi Academy


To adjust your sound quality in the game:
 Select Setup from the Main Menu.
 Click on Sound.
 Click on Sound Quality to toggle between High and Low.

Adjusting Volume Levels Within Jedi Academy


To access these options:
 Select Setup from the Main Menu.
 Click on Sound.
 Click on the Music, Effects or Voice volume sliders to adjust the volume levels.

Adjusting The Volume Through Windows


With some sound cards, you may want to adjust the volume in the Windows control panel before starting
Jedi Academy, or you may need to exit the game to adjust the volume. Double click on the Volume
Control icon on your task bar and adjust the volume control, CD audio and wave volume. If the Volume
Control icon is not on your taskbar, follow these directions to adjust your volume:
 Click on the Start button on your taskbar.
 Choose Programs.
 Choose Accessories.
 Windows 98/ME/2000/XP: Choose Entertainment.
 Choose Volume Control.
 Adjust the Wave Volume slider.
 If you are not hearing any sound, make sure to de-select the MUTE box below the Wave Volume
slider.

Default Volume Levels Vary in Different Operating Systems


The default volume levels vary greatly on some sound cards in the different operating systems. Because
of this, you may need to adjust your volume control in Windows before entering the game. Please follow
the instructions above for information on adjusting the volume through Windows.

Volume Control Programs


Some sound card and/or PC manufacturers may have proprietary software that must be adjusted
separately from the Windows Volume control. Consult your hardware documentation for more information.

Powered or Amplified Speakers


If you have powered speakers and have both line-out and speaker-out jacks on your sound card, try
plugging your speakers into the line-out jack. Most sound card’s speaker-out jacks have an amplified
signal and may cause static or popping on your amplified speakers. Switching to your line-out jack may
greatly improve the sound quality.

General Sound Card Troubleshooting


If your sound card is not set up correctly in Windows, not 100% DirectX or Windows 98, 2000, ME, or XP
compatible, or you have a resource conflict, these sound problems may occur:
 You may hear static.
 You may hear stuttering, especially as someone starts speaking.
 You may hear repeating sounds.
 There may be no sound.
 The sound may drop out.
 You may experience a clicking or crackling sound.
 The game may not run.

Testing Your Sound Card In Windows


You can use the Windows Media Player to play a sound to make sure your sound card is set up correctly
in Windows. To do this:
 Click on the Start button on your taskbar.
 Select Programs.
 Select Accessories.
 Windows 98/ME/2000/XP: Select Entertainment.
 Select Windows Media Player.
 Go to the File menu.
 Choose Open... and choose a sound to test. Please be sure to choose Files of type: Sound
(*.wav).

Testing Your Sound Card In DirectX Diagnostics


After installing DirectX 9.0a, you can run the DirectX Diagnostics program to test your sound card. To do
this:
 Insert the Jedi Academy Disc in the CD-ROM drive.
 Select Help from the Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy launcher.
 Select Analyze your Computer.
 Click on DirectX Diagnostics. This takes you to the DirectX Diagnostics screen.
 Click the tab that says Sound, and then click on Test. If your card fails these tests, you may have
problems running Jedi Academy or any other program that requires DirectX.

Inspect And Clean The CD


A dirty or scratched CD can cause sound, video and installation problems. Check your CD for any dirt,
smudges, fingerprints, or scratches. To clean your CD, wipe it gently with a soft cloth, moving in smooth
strokes from the center hub to the outer edge of the CD.

Specific Sound Issues

Enabling EAX On Cards Without EAX Support


Jedi Academy supports EAX 4.0, however if you try to enable EAX on a card, which does not fully support
EAX 4.0, it could result in several problems occurring in game. Including incorrect sound effects play-
back, incorrect sound volumes, static, and sound distortion. If you encounter any of these issues, please
disable EAX in the shell. If you are unsure of whether or not your sound card supports EAX, please
consult your card’s manufacturer.

Dynamic Music
Systems close to the minimum specification for Jedi Academy may not hear dynamic music (music
changing as events occur in the game). These systems will play one music track throughout an entire
level. This is an intended feature designed to prevent low-end systems from experiencing severe
performance problems in the game. Adding additional system memory may enable dynamic music, as this
is the primary factor the game assesses for this feature. Once memory has been upgraded, you will need
to enter Safe Mode by selecting the Star Wars: Jedi Academy (Safe Mode) shortcut located in the start
menu under LucasArts Jedi Academy. This will cause the game to re-detect your memory and enable
dynamic music. If you have modified any controls in the game, you will need to reassign them when you
restart the game via the launcher.

Aopen AW230
When using this card, you may experience the following issues:
 You may hear warbling in environmental sound effects after enabling low quality sounds. Selecting
high quality sound corrects this issue.
 You may hear a hiss in sound effects and music in the game. Lowering the Effects and Music volume
sliders in the Setup menu improves this issue.
 Windows XP: When using this card with the default XP driver, the music may distort and drop out
during the opening movie. This does not occur during gameplay.

Diamond Monster Sound MX400


When using this card in Windows ME you may not hear sound coming from the rear speakers of a 4-
speaker system. This is a known issue with the drivers that Windows ME supplies for this card.
Unfortunately, there are no drivers that fix this issue.

The configuration software that comes with this card has a setting that enables Direct Sound acceleration.
This feature is enabled by default when the software is installed. With this enabled you may experience
distortion in the sound in Jedi Academy. If this occurs disable Direct Sound Acceleration in the In Control
Tools control panel.

Ensoniq Audio PCI


When using this card, you may experience the following issues:
 You may hear a hiss in sound effects and music in the game. Lowering the volume sliders in the
Setup menu may improve this issue.
 Windows 2000: When using the default Windows 2000 driver, you may also hear popping in the
sound effects and music in the game. Lowering the Effects and Music volume sliders will also lower the
popping sound.
ESS 1688, 1868 or 1887 Chipsets
When using a card with these chipsets, you may hear static or popping during movies. We recommend
that you check the ESS web site for updated drivers, which may correct this issue.

ESS Canyon 3D Chipset


When an ESS Canyon 3D sound card, such as the Diamond MX400, is set up in Windows 2000 or ME,
Windows detects the card as a Maestro 2E. When using these drivers, you may hear sound distortion and
static in the game, or the rear speakers may not work. If this occurs, we recommend that you change to
the driver for your specific card or check the ESS website for updated drivers which may correct these
issues.

I/O Magic Storm Surge


When using this card in Windows XP, all sounds in the game may become staticy if you go to the Main
Menu from an area where certain sounds are playing. Returning to the menu, then back to the game
corrects this issue.

Guillemot MaxiSound Game Theater 64


When using this card, you may experience the following problems:
 Windows 9x: Please make sure that you install the 1.2 drivers, d649xeu1, prior to installing driver
version 1.3, d64ess9xu13.
 You may hear stuttering and repeating sounds in the game after installing the updated drivers, version
1.3. Selecting Low Quality sound in the Setup Screen improves this issue. NOTE: This issue did not occur
when using the original CD drivers for this card.
 Windows XP: When using this card with the Windows 2000 drivers, d64ess-2k-100, voice lines may
be severely corrupted. Please check for updated Windows XP drivers, which may correct these issues.

MediaSonic Gold-16 Pro


When using this card in Jedi Academy, you may hear a pop in the sound during in-game movies. We
recommend that you check the ESS web site for updated drivers, which may correct this issue. You may
hear static in sound when the volume is set too high with this card. Lowering the volume corrects this
issue.

Microsoft Digital Sound System 80


When using these speakers in USB mode, you may intermittently hear static and distortion in the audio.
This occurs because the USB speakers require CPU time to run. Windows allocates 100% of the CPU to
the programs that are running, such as Jedi Academy, while some USB devices take up to 10% of the
CPU, thus trying to use 110% of the resources.

OPTi 931 Chipset


When using a card with this chipset, you may experience the following problems:
 You may occasionally hear long, loud bursts of static.
 You may randomly hear a scratchy sound.
Please check the OPTi web site for updated drivers for these cards.

Vortex and Vortex 2 Based Sound Cards


We are unable to provide support for Vortex or Vortex 2 based sound cards in Windows 2000 or XP with
this game. This includes the Turtle Beach Montego family of sound cards, as well as other cards with
these chipsets.

Vortex Based Sound Cards


When using a Vortex based sound card, you may hear occasional sound distortion in the game. If this
occurs, we recommend that you lower the volume control in the game. If this does not correct the issue,
you will need to lower the volume control in Windows to approximately ½ way.

Yamaha OPL3-SA Sound Cards


When using the Windows drivers with a Yamaha OPL3 sound card, your sound card may not be
recognized in the game. This issue is corrected with Yamaha driver version 2338 (4.05.00.2338).

-7- CD-ROM Drive Issues


Jedi Academy does not access the CD during play. However, if you are experiencing problems when
installing or launching the game, your CD-ROM may not meet the minimum requirements to run Jedi
Academy or there may be a problem with your drive.

Removing the Jedi Academy CD During A Multiplayer Game


We recommend that you do not remove the Jedi Academy CD during a multiplayer game. The game
needs the disc to load new maps. When you place the CD back in the drive when the game prompts for
the disc, the launcher may load in the background, causing the game to lose focus. If this occurs, click the
mouse button to return focus to the game.

CD-ROM Access Error


A blue screen CD-ROM access error might be a symptom of one of these problems:
 You may have a dirty or scratched CD.
 You may have removed the CD from the computer while Jedi Academy was running or paused.
 Your CD-ROM drive may be having trouble reading the disc. This is common on some 8X (eight
speed) CD-ROM drives.
 Your CD-ROM drive may be getting old or worn.
 Your CD-ROM may not be properly installed in Windows.
First, check your CD for any dirt, fingerprints, smudges or scratches. To clean your CD, wipe it gently with
a soft cloth, moving in smooth strokes from the center hub to the outer edge of the CD. If your CD looks
fine, replace it in the drive and see if you have this problem again. If the problem persists, try testing the
drive with a different CD.

Trouble Accessing Files


If you are having trouble accessing or using files on the CD-ROM or Hard Drive, your drives may be
running in MS-DOS Compatibility Mode. To check this:
 Right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop.
 Choose Properties from the pop-down menu.
 Click on Performance.
 Look at File System:
It should say 32-bit. If this field states that any of your drives are using MS-DOS Compatibility Mode, your
drives are not configured properly to run under Windows 98. This mode will greatly decrease the
performance of your computer, and may not allow you to access programs that are written for 32-bit file
access only.
This may be caused by:
 IDE or SCSI interfaces that are not properly set up under Windows.
 Inappropriate drivers for IDE or SCSI hardware.
 Proprietary CD-ROM drives.
 Computers that do not support LBA (Logical Block Addressing) modes except through software,
such as Dynamic Drive Overlay, which allows the computer to see the whole capacity of large hard drives.
 Software Viruses, such as the MYB or CMOS A virus.
If you are experiencing this problem, please contact your computer manufacturer or a computer
technician for assistance in correcting this problem before attempting to install the game.

-8- Controller Device Issues


USB Devices
When using USB devices on your system, you may occasionally hear static and distortion in audio or you
may experience slow downs and hitching in the game. This occurs because USB devices require a
percentage of the CPU’s processing time to run. Windows allocates 100% of the CPU to the programs
that are running, such as Jedi Academy, while some USB devices take up to 10% of the CPU, thus trying
to use 110% of the resources.

Gameport Latency Issues


Certain sound cards, such as cards with ESS and Yamaha chipsets, utilize the Standard Gameport driver
included in the Windows operating systems. These cards may cause performance problems if a controller
is connected to the gameport. You may experience hitching in the game or your controller may not work
properly. If you see these issues, try using a USB controller to play the game and disconnect any devices
from the gameport on your sound card.

Logitech Mouse
If the mouse wheel does not work in game when using a Logitech mouse, the scrolling size may need to
be set to none in the mouse properties under the buttons tab. The web wheel should also be disabled by
setting Button 2 to middle button.

NOTE: This may deactivate the mouse wheel in other applications, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Custom Mouse Cursors


When using custom Windows cursors, such as the 3D cursor, the game cursor may be discolored or
corrupt in some areas on the game, especially in menus. Disabling this feature corrects this issue.

Kensington Expert Mouse


When using the Kensington Expert Mouse with the PS/2 adaptor, the mouse may lose sensitivity in the
game. Adjusting the sensitivity in the Mouse Control Panel or Kensington Mouseware does not correct
this issue with this configuration. This does not occur when using the USB adaptor with this device.

Keyboard Issues
Users of compact keyboards, such as those found on laptop systems or those used for ergonomic
reasons may experience some problems using the default set of keyboard commands.

Keyboard Limitations
Some keyboards may have limitations in Jedi Academy. You may be unable to use multiple keys
simultaneously. For example: If you are pressing two keys at the same time, only one key may register
the action that you chose.

Onboard Keyboard Shortcut Keys


We recommend that you do not use any of the onboard shortcut keys on your keyboard when playing the
game. Doing so may have adverse affects on the game, such as causing the game to close while you are
playing a mission.
-9- DirectX Setup
Technical Overview Of DirectX
DirectX is a library provided by Microsoft to run inside the operating system and provide programmers
with seamless access to all of the hardware features available today. The DirectX platform provides an
environment that allows developers to use a standardized format when programming an application. This
makes it easier to support a wide variety of different hardware configurations. Prior to DirectX, developers
were forced to write hardware-specific code (with a specific driver for each different piece of hardware).

NOTE: Some older systems may contain hardware that may not be fully DirectX compatible. For optimum
performance in Jedi Academy, your system must fully support DirectX. Fortunately, many manufacturers
are releasing updated drivers. If you are unsure whether your system will support DirectX, please contact
the manufacturer of your system for more information.

WARNING: Once you have installed DirectX, it is not easily removed from your system.

Where To Find DirectX 9.0a


DirectX 9.0a is provided for you on this CD. During the manual installation of Jedi Academy, you will be
prompted to install DirectX if it is not already correctly installed on your system.

If DirectX 9.0a is detected on your system, you will not be prompted to install DirectX.

Important: You must have Administrator rights to properly install DirectX on a Windows 2000 or XP
system.

To install DirectX after installing this game, follow these steps:


 Insert the Jedi Academy Disc in the CD-ROM drive.
 Select Help from the Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy launcher.
 Select Analyze your Computer.
 Click on Install DirectX 9.0a and follow the on screen prompts.

Crash after Selecting Analyze your Computer Before Installing DirectX


You may experience a crash after selecting Analyze your Computer from the game launcher if the sound
or video card that you are using is not set up correctly in Windows. This occurs because some drivers
require a specific version of DirectX to perform correctly. If this occurs, reinstalling DirectX may correct
this.

If you are unable to access DirectX via the Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy launcher, follow these
steps to manually install DirectX from the CD:

 With the Jedi Academy Disc in the CD-ROM drive, open My Computer from the desktop.
 Right click on the Jedi_Academy icon.
 Select Open in the context menu.
 Open the DirectX folder.
 Double click the dxsetup.exe icon to run the installer.
 Follow the on screen prompts.

NOTE: Some programs that were made with earlier versions of DirectX may not work with DirectX 9.0a.

Checking Your System For DirectX Support


After you have installed Jedi Academy and DirectX, you may want to determine whether DirectX supports
your computer hardware. To do this:
 Insert the Jedi Academy Disc in the CD-ROM drive.
 Select Help from the Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy launcher.
 Select Analyze your Computer.
 Click on DirectX Diagnostics. This takes you to the DirectX Diagnostics screen.
 Click on the Display 1, Display 2, and Sound tabs.
 If you are experiencing any problems while running Jedi Academy, we recommend that you test
DirectDraw, Direct3D and DirectSound on their respective screens. If any of these tests fail, please check
for updated drivers for the hardware that failed the test. If you continue to have problems after updating
the drivers, we recommend that you contact the hardware manufacturer of the card for further assistance.
NOTE: The Display 2 tab will only be available if you have a 3D Accelerator pass-through card (i.e.
Voodoo/Voodoo2 cards) or two video cards in your system for dual monitor support.

If you are unable to open the Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy launcher, follow these steps to run
the DirectX diagnostics program:

 Click on Start to open the start menu.


 Click on Run.
 Type DXDiag into the Run dialog box.
 Click OK.

-10- Multiplayer Issues


This section lists some of the common problems that may occur during Multiplayer play and some
information to help you avoid these problems. For more information refer to the Star Wars Jedi Knight:
Jedi Academy Manual or the LucasArts Home Page on the World Wide Web at
http://www.lucasarts.com/.

Jedi Academy uses UDP (User Datagram Protocol), a connectionless protocol that runs on top of Internet
Protocol networks such as TCP/IP or IPX. UDP differs from TCP in that it sends packets out in a one-way
fashion without establishing a connection first, much like the difference between receiving a telegram
(UDP) versus receiving a telephone call (TCP.) UDP allows Jedi Academy to flow more smoothly during
Internet play due to the faster information transport time.

Recommendations for Improving Multiplayer Performance


 Make sure the host is the fastest computer participating in the game. During network play, it
is recommended that the game be hosted on a Pentium III 700 or faster. The faster the host computer, the
better the overall game performance will be, especially in non-dedicated server situations.
 More memory improves performance. More than 128MB of RAM in the host improves
Multiplayer performance and stability for all players. Clients also benefit from increased memory.
 Limit the number of players. The number of players in the game can greatly affect
performance, particularly for low-end systems. Setting the maximum number of players in the game to a
lower number may improve performance on hosted servers. Low-end system players may have better
performance joining smaller games, particularly over the Internet.

LAN Games

General Tips for Setting up and Troubleshooting a Home LAN


 Make sure that your Ethernet network card is properly installed. Look in Device Manager on
each computer to make sure that the Network Adapter’s driver is properly installed and the device is
functioning normally. Refer to your Ethernet Adapter’s manual for information on setting up the adapter.
 Configure your Network Settings. View your settings in the Network Control Panel to make
sure you at least have the following listed on each computer:
 Client for Microsoft Networks
 <Your Network Adapter>
 TCP/IP Protocol
 Make sure all computers have the proper protocol installed. If you are setting up a home
LAN, it is suggested that you use TCP/IP. NOTE: Some home network systems also require the IPX/SPX-
compatible protocol to work correctly. IPX is not supported in Windows 2000. If you wish to try to use IPX
for this operating system, please see the Windows help site (http://support.microsoft.com) for assistance.
 Make sure that the cable is correctly connected to your network adapter and/or hub.
Whichever kind of cable and connection you are using, make sure that it is firmly and securely plugged in
to your network adapter and/or hub.
 Make sure that all players are using the same Workgroup name. The Windows default name
is “Workgroup”. To check this in Windows 98, and ME, go to the Network Control Panel and click on the
Identification tab. Look at the box marked Workgroup. Make any changes necessary so all the
computers are in the same workgroup. You must be logged on as Administrator in Windows 2000 and XP
to make changes to your Network configuration. Please consult your System Administrator and/or
Windows Help for information on how to make these changes.
 Test your network. When you have the proper protocol on all the computers and the workgroup
names match, you should be able to see other computer names in Network Neighborhood, My Network
Places in Windows 2000 and XP.

It may be necessary to reboot the computers to update your Network settings after making adjustments.
Pressing the F5 key while viewing Network Neighborhood may allow Windows to find other computers.
You can also choose Find Computer in the Start Menu and type in the name of the computer. This is due
to the way Windows’ peer-to-peer networking functions. If all of the computers appear in Network
Neighborhood, then you are ready to try a Jedi Academy Local LAN game.

Please refer to Windows Help for information on configuring network Clients, Adapters, Protocols,
and File and Printer Sharing. Click Start, then Help. In the Find or Index Window, type network,
then choose from the available related subjects. Earlier Windows versions install IPX/SPX-compatible
protocol as their default, while later versions default to the TCP/IP protocol. You may need to install
another protocol on your system if you wish to use it. Installing a different protocol may require the
Windows CD.

Internet Games
Recommendations For Hosting An Internet Game
For optimal performance during Internet play, it is recommended that Jedi Academy be hosted on a fast
computer (PIII 700+) with a broadband connection. Games hosted on fast Internet connections such as
ISDN, Cable Modem, xDSL, or T1 will result in the best possible experience over the Internet. Having
more than 128MB of RAM installed on the server system also improves network performance and
stability. Multiplayer games played through the Find Server Internet page operate better when all players
use the same connection type (DSL, Modem, Cable Modem). Using a mix of high and mid bandwidth
connections might increase the chances of a player encountering intensified lag.

You Need An Account With An ISP To Play On The Internet


You must have a connection to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to connect with other players through
the Find Server Internet page. This includes Dial-Up Networking connections, Cable Modem service,
xDSL service and Direct Corporate Connections. The type of account that is needed is called PPP. This
type of account is used to browse the World Wide Web and is usually part of a number of services offered
by most ISPs. If you need help configuring your computer to use the Internet, contact your ISP’s technical
support.
Configure Your Firewall or Router for Internet Play
Firewall software is designed to prevent hostile action from outside your computer or network from
affecting files on your hard drive. Internet gaming activity can seem like such action to this type of
software. You may encounter problems trying to connect to a multiplayer game if your computer is behind
a firewall. Please refer to your firewall documentation for suggestions on how to allow specific programs
to operate through it if you do not intend to temporarily take it down, or ask your network/system
administrator for assistance. In addition, many routers designed to share one Internet connection among
more than one computer have firewalls built into them. Most routers require specific Internet ports to be
opened before multiplayer games will function correctly. The specific UDP ports that Jedi Academy uses
are 28060, 28061, 28062, and 28070 through 28081 (inclusive.) These ports need to be opened in the
Out-bound direction to join games. They will also need to be opened in the In-bound direction if you want
players outside of your firewall to be able to join your dedicated or non-dedicated servers behind your
firewall. Please consult your router manufacturer’s manual for information on how to set these ports.

Connect To The Internet Before Launching Jedi Academy


You must establish your connection to the Internet before starting the game. If you are having trouble
playing a Local LAN game due to your computer trying to dial up to the Internet, you may need to disable
the auto-connect feature in your Internet Options on your Control Panel before playing. Refer to
Windows Help for more information.

Getting Disconnected From Your ISP After Starting An Internet Game


If your ISP connection is set to automatically disconnect after a certain period of inactivity, you may be
disconnected while playing Jedi Academy. You should disable this option in your Internet Options on
your Control Panel before playing Jedi Academy to prevent being disconnected mid-game.

Internet Performance Issues


The time of day can have an impact on your connection quality. If you have trouble playing Jedi Academy
over your Dial-Up Internet connection during peak hours, you might try playing later at night or at other
times of the day to get a better quality connection. Setting the game to display at a lower screen
resolution or setting Texture Detail to Low in the Setup menu under Video might help other performance
problems during a multiplayer game.

Dropped Packets
Each piece of data that is sent over a network or the Internet is called a packet. It is important for all of
these packets to be delivered intact and in a timely manner for a smooth multiplayer experience. This is
generally not a problem on a LAN, but the Internet can frequently drop packets (lose them) depending on
the quality of your connection and the amount of congestion present on the Internet itself. If packets can't
get through between a player and the host due to a poor connection, some problems will occur.

Latency
Latency is a measure of the time (in milliseconds or ms) that it takes for data to travel round-trip from one
computer to another over a Network or the Internet. Latency is usually not an issue on a LAN, but on the
Internet, high latency can cause game performance to degrade severely. When playing any game over
the Internet, it is important to have a low latency connection. High latency will contribute to poor
multiplayer performance and decreased stability.

Connection Problems
If you are consistently having trouble with dropped packets or latency, the following are a few things you
can try to help with your connection to the Internet:
 Disconnect and reconnect to your ISP.
 Make sure that you are using a 56Kbps modem or a higher broadband connection.
 Play with fewer players. More players in the game increase the likelihood of having trouble on 56K
Dial-up connections or 56K to DSL/Cable Modem.
 Try another ISP. Some Internet providers have slow or congested networks and are not suitable for
gaming. If you consistently have trouble joining games or lose connection after joining a game you may
have an unreliable ISP.

Connection Times Out


If your connection times out while attempting to play the game via a 56K or broadband modem, check the
following:
 Your modem may not be installed or set up correctly. Make sure that your phone line or cable is
securely connected to your modem and that your modem is setup and operating correctly in Windows.
See your manufacturer’s hardware documentation for proper modem setup and your ISP’s documentation
for proper account setup information.
 You might have disconnected from your Internet Service Provider. Some ISPs disconnect after a
certain amount of inactive time, if too much data is being transmitted or if they are doing unscheduled
maintenance.

3Com US Robotics Sportster 56K Voice USB


If you experience occasional lockups during Internet or modem play using this modem in USB mode in
Windows 98, you can solve this by using a Serial cable to connect your modem instead of a USB cable.
This may be resolved in a future modem driver or Windows 98 update.

Other Multiplayer Issues

Using Bots (Computer Controlled Characters) in Multiplayer Games


If a host is playing while serving a game, make sure that the player with the fastest computer and fastest
connection hosts the game if computer players are to be used, otherwise various performance problems
such as hitching, freezing, and other packet loss related problems may occur.

Using large numbers of bots in both player hosted games and Dedicated Servers may result in
performance problems or an inability to load a map. If this becomes a problem, reduce the number of bots
on your server.

Server Disconnected Message


At some point while playing Jedi Academy you might find yourself at the Main Menu with a Server
Disconnected error message. Some reasons this may occur include:
 You may have changed settings in the Video Setup screen between matches after readying
yourself for the map change. If this occurs, you should be able to re-join the game through the Join Server
screen.
 You may have been voted out of the game.
 You may have been disconnected from your ISP. If this occurs, you will need to exit the game to
check that your Internet connection is still valid.
 The server may have been taken down or disconnected at the source.

Removing the Jedi Academy CD During A Multiplayer Game


We recommend that you do not remove the Jedi Academy CD during a multiplayer game. The game
needs the disc to load new maps. When you place the CD back in the drive when the game prompts for
the disc, the launcher may load in the background, causing the game to lose focus. If this occurs, click the
mouse button to return focus to the game.
