NOTE 1. Answer any FIVE full questions, choosing at least ONE full question from each MODULE.
2. Draw neat diagram where ever necessary.
3. Values of constants: Planck's constant (h) = 6.626 × 10−34 Js, Speed of light (c) = 3×108 m/s,
Botzmann's constant (kB) = 1.38 × 10−23 J/K, Mass of the electron (m) = 9.11 × 10−31 kg,
Charge of the electron (e) = 1.6 × 10−19 C, Permittivity of free space (ε0) = 8.854 × 10−12 F/m,
Avogadro number (NA) = 6.023 × 1026 /k-mol.

MODULE - I
1. a. What is internal field? Why the internal field do not exist for gasses, but 9 L2 1 1,12
exists for solids? Obtain the expression for internal field in a case of solid by
considering linear 1-D array of atoms.
b. State and explain Meissner effect with neat diagram. Also show that material 6 L2 1 1,12
in superconducting state is a perfect diamagnet.
c. Calculate the transaction temperature and critical magnetic fields at 0 K and 5 L3 5 2,12
at 4.2 K of a superconductor, if it's critical magnetic fields at 14 K and 13 K
are 0.176 T and 0.528 T, respectively.

2. a. Describe type-I and type-II superconductors with examples and necessary 9 L2 1 1,12

b. What is polarisation? Describe electronic and ionic polarisation mechanisms 6 L2 1 1,12
with neat diagrams.
c. Sulphur has density of 2.07 g/cm3, atomic weight of 32.07 and dielectric 5 L3 5 2,12
constant of 3.4. Calculate the electronic polarisability assuming the sulphur
has cubic structure.

c. He-Ne laser is emitting a laser beam of wavelength 6328 Å with average 5 L3 5 2,12
power of 4.5 mW. Find number of photons emitted per second by the laser.

5. a. Setup 1-D time-independent Schrödinger wave equation. Mention any three 9 L2 2 1,12
properties of wave function.
b. What are matter waves? Explain de Broglie hypothesis of matter waves. 6 L2 2 1,12

c. The energy of an electron constrained to move in a 1-D box of width 4 Å is 5 L3 5 2,12

6. a. The potential energy (V) of particle moving in a 1-D potential well of infinite 10 L2 2 1,12

V = ∞ for 0 > x > a. Solve the Schrödinger equation to obtain the expression
for normalised wave function. Why quantum number cannot take zero
value? Represent wave functions of first two excited states graphically.
b. State Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. Prove that the electron cannot exist 6 L2 2 1,12
inside the nucleus using uncertainty principle.
c. Calculate de Broglie wavelength of α-particle accelerated through a potential 4 L3 5 2,12
difference of 25 kV.

7. a. What are Maxwell's equations? List the Maxwell's equations in point form 9 L2 3 1,12
and integral form for time varying fields along with their physical
significances. Give the word statements of point forms.
b. State the law of conservation of charges. With usual notations show that, 6 L2 3 1,12

9. a. Describe Hall effect in semiconductor with neat diagram. Deduce an 8 L2 4 1,12
expression the Hall voltage in terms of Hall coefficient.
b. Describe the construction and working of photodiode with neat diagram. 8 L2 4 1,12

c. A pure germanium (Ge) has an intrinsic carrier concentration of 2.1 x 1019 4 L3 5 2,12
m−3. Boron is added to pure Ge to form p-type semiconductor. The
concentration of boron added is 4.5×1023 atoms/m3. The mobility of electron
and hole is 0.4 m2V-1s-1 and 0.2 m2V-1s-1, respectively. Calculate the
electrical conductivity of Ge before and after addition of boron atoms.

10 a. Describe the principle, construction and working of semiconductor laser with 10 L2 4 1,12
neat energy band diagram.
b. Explain the formation of energy bands in silicon based the formation of 6 L2 4 1,12
energy band due to splitting of energy levels at equilibrium internuclear
distance along with the necessary energy band diagram.
c. A p-type semiconductor slab of thickness 1 mm, length 12 mm, and width 5 4 L3 5 2,12
mm is placed in a magnetic field having flux density 0.3 T with its thickness
perpendicular to the field direction. A current of 2 mA flowing parallel to its
length produces a Hall voltage. Calculate the value of Hall voltage, if Hall
coefficient is 4.21×10−5 m3C-1.
