What Is It

7
Communication comes from Latin words “communis” and “communicare”.
Communis means to make common. Communicare means to make common to
many.

Communication is a process of sharing experiences among people that is clear

and understandable.

Communication is a systemic process by which people interact through the

exchange of verbal and nonverbal symbols to create and interpret meanings.

Five Functions of Communication

1. Social Interaction – The manner in which people talk, act and react towards each
other in different social settings. For example: a conversation
with family members,a talk with a friend, and a chat with an
officemate.

talk with a friend a conversation with

family members

Purposes of Social Interactions

A. Initiating Relationships - We interact with other individuals in order to

forge
relationships.

B. Building Relationships - One major key in building relationships is

constant social interactions with people in our
network.

C. Sustaining Relationships - In every social interaction, misunderstandings

are the normal occurrences. Social
interactions may always lead to sustenance
of relationships if speakers express their
thoughts sensitively and responsibly.
D. Transactions/Exchanges - Interacting in exchange of something.
E. Accomplishment of Goal - We involve ourselves in social interactions in
order to attain goals whether personal or
group.
2. Information - Information are conveyed to us
through various 8media –
television, radio, books,
magazines or simply through
word-of-mouth.
3. Emotional Expression - the manner on how we communicate
our emotions. For instance, when we
are physically or emotionally in pain,
our normal way of communicating
this feeling is through crying.

4. Motivation - Motivation is influencing or persuading

people to move from where they are to a
certain point. For example, influencing
people to care for the environment
garbage disposal
through proper garbage disposal.

5. Regulation/Control - communicating to maintain order. For example, we need to

be communicated with the do’s and don’ts in our respective
organizatios- family, schools, companies, business, etc.

Nature of Communication

1. Communication is a process.

It is a creative, continuing condition of life, a process that changes as the

communicators’ environments and needs change.

For example, many words in English have become obsolete, trite, or altered
in their meanings while new words have evolved. Nowadays, we hear blended
words or mash-ups, such as chillax (chill + relax), frenemy (friend + enemy),
bromance (brother + romance) which were previously unheard of.

2. Communication is systemic.

The various components of communication, speaker/sender, listener/receiver,

message, medium, channel, feedback, content, and noise are linked to one another
as parts of one system. The absence of any one of them can result to ineffective
communication.

3. Communication is symbolic.
9
Verbal symbols are spoken (using voice and speech sounds) or written (using
letters or characters). Nonverbal ones are employed and perceived through our body
language and voice quality while speaking. Our body language includes our
gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, posture or touch. The quality of our voice
refers to the tone, pitch, rate, volume and emphasis that we use.

4. Communication involves meanings.

Contrary to what many think or believe, meanings are assigned, given, or

invented, not received. Flags, crowns, crosses and traffic signals, for example, do
not contain meanings; their meanings are assigned to them. Our physical and social
environments, including the messages that we send or receive, can be given
different meanings depending on their frame or reference, as well as on whom we
are communicating with and what, when, where, how we are communicating.

Example:

The Nature of Communication

Process of Communication Example

The speaker generates an idea. Daphne loves Rico, her suitor, as a

friend.

The speaker encodes an idea or converts an

idea into words or actions. She thinks of how to tell him using their
native language.

The speaker transmits or sends out a

message. She tells him, “Rico mahal kita bilang
The receiver gets the message. kaibigan.’’

The receiver decodes or interprets the Rico hears what Daphne says. He tries to
message based on the context. analyze what she means based on the
context and their relationship, and he is
heartbroken.

The receiver sends or provides feedback. He frowns and does not say something
because he is in pain.
