I. INTRODUCTION:

Reading is one of the most important skills that should be developed in the
elementary school learners. This will lead them in a better learning process. It allows them
to access the breadth of the curriculum and improve their communication and language
skills. This will be the open doors to all kinds of ideas and knowledge that will be a great
help to their studies. It will broaden their imagination as well.

It is necessary for a teacher to ensure that all his learners must be a good reader. A
reading intervention may be given for those who were evaluated as struggling readers.

For this school year 2021-2022, since face to face instructions were allowed at
almost 2 months before the school year ends, the School Head and the teachers of Buasao
Elementary School planned and have revisions of the existing implemented remedial
reading program named Project LaBaN (Lahat ng Bata Nagbabasa) as intervention for the
learners that were in the Phil Iri frustration level. Whereas, the teachers asked the help of
the parents/guardians / relatives and friends of the learners in practicing their reading skills.

II. OBJECTIVES:

This Project LaBaN Remedial Reading Intervention aims to

a. make the struggling readers become a proficient reader.

b. improve reading level of the pupils in the frustration level

III. PROCESS:
The remedial reading intervention was divided into three phases.

The first phase is the preparation and planning. In this phase, the school head and
the teachers will plan the said intervention.
The second phase is the implementation of the remedial reading program. The first
step in this phase is to conduct the PhilIri PreTest to determine the learners in the
frustration Level and that will undergo on the remedial reading intervention.

The main part of this phase is actual implementation of the program wherein the
following were given to the learners and instructed the parent/guardian or relatives on how
they were able to help the learners in practicing reading.
 The following strategies, approaches and games may be used:
 Printed reading materials every week
 Marungko Approach
 Sending of reading videos thru FB Messenger (letter sounds, most frequently used
words, basic sightwords
 Reading through the use of flashcards
 Simple reading exercises like reading the labels of objects found inside the house
with the guidance of the parents, sisters, or brothers, etc.
 Asking the parents/guardian to let their child to read at least one story a week
 Listening and viewing different videos in reading ( letter sounds, phonetics, most
frequently used words, dolch basic sightwords, stories and fables)

The last and third phase was the post implementation or the final evaluation which is
conducting the PhilIri Post Test. This will be the basis if the remedial reading intervention was a
success, and if there is a change in the result of Pre test and Post test.

PROJECT LaBaN
( Lahat ng Bata Nagbabasa)
ACCOMPLISHMENT REPORT
S.Y. 2022-2023

The 3 B’s Initiative or Hamon: Bawat Bata Bumabasa is one of the advocacies of the
Department of Education that help to fulfill the mandate to produce a productive and
responsible citizen equipped with essential competencies and skills for lifelong learning. To
make every learner a proficient reader, schools are tasked to help learners develop their
reading skills. This is to strengthen the reading proficiency of every learner and to nurture a
culture of reading which is a requisite skill in all content areas. (DepEd Memo #173s.2019)

The Buasao Elementary School had a reading program for the past years. The school
follows the steps in achieving a zero-non-reader school.
The first step is using the PhilIRI Pre-test in evaluating the reading ability of each
learner from Grade 1 to Grade 6 wherein the teachers were able to track those learners in
the independent, instructional and frustration level. The pupils in the independent and
instructional level will be having enrichment activities by giving them extra reading materials
with questions that will help them enrich their reading skills and comprehension as well. The
evaluated learners in frustration level will undergo remedial reading instructions.
The second step step is having a parent-teacher conference regarding the result of
the pre-test and ask the assistance of parents in practicing their child in reading even at
home.
Then the 3rd is assigning the reading teachers who will have a schedule in doing the
remedial reading instructions. The SPTA officers were tapped to assist and be a reading
parent at the school from 3:00 to 3:20 in the afternoon.
The 4th step is the main process of reading intervention for struggling readers. The
assigned reading teachers and SPTA officers used different strategies like viewing lessons in

reading, videos of sounds of letters for Grade I, giving reading exercises, and other activities
that will help to develop their oral language skills, phonological awareness, phonics, that will
also enrich their fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
The 5th step is evaluating the learners reading progress thru Oral Verification every
quarter. The last step is evaluating the progress of the learners in reading by using the post-
test reading tools of PhilIRI.

The said reading program was successfully implemented. There is a great change in
the reading level as recorded at the of result of PhilIri and EGRA post test
