A Narrative Report on Summer Reading &

Numeracy Enrichment
The pandemic has affected many students with heightened stress disruptions
and remote learning hurdles, magnifying the existing literacy challenges and
exponentially increasing the inequity between children who are supported to read
and those who aren’t. Unfortunately, students here in Camaman-an National High
School had numbers of non-readers and/or low percentage rate of comprehension
level. This was base from the Reading Assessment results conducted by the school
last November 2021 and the overall grades for some students under Numeracy
subjects having low percentage grade from 75%-79%. This was a challenge for the
teachers in the school on how to sustain the learning of the students despite the
shades of pandemic.

Amidst this crisis, the Camaman-an National High School fights for careening
towards continuing education, highlighting the essence of reading and numeracy. A
child's reading skills are important to their success in school as they will allow them
to access the breadth of the curriculum and improve their communication and
language skills (Bacon, 1626). Moreover, it is a basic understanding that a person
tagged as literate once he/she has the ability to read and that follows the ability to
compute, write, spell, listen and speak.

Basing from the DepEd Order no. 13, s. 2018 Implementing Guidelines on
the Conduct of Remedial and Advancement Classes during Summer, it is
promulgated to provide students with academic proficiencies, personal improvement
and social opportunities highlighting the essence of reading and numeracy
enrichment. Hence, a Summer Reading & Numeracy Enrichment was implemented
for a fifteen (15) weekday activity which follows the integrated approach to teaching
and learning where all English, Filipino and Math subject areas are involved
focusing on reading comprehension skills. This would certainly address not only the
existing problems on reading deficiencies of our students but further nurture and
hone the individual’s love of reading thus exposing them to various opportunities
where reading and numeracy skills will be enhanced through play, fun games, oral
interpretation, videos and other enjoyable activities.

The aforementioned school-based activity is anchored on the following actions:

1. to recognize the value of selections read through literary appreciation to wit:

a. building vocabulary
b. pronunciation drills
2. to apply different reading strategies through various literary activities
3. to enhance their comprehension skills by teaching them how to use their
experiences and their knowledge to make sense of what they are reading, and
4. to provide numerical understanding on mathematical operations and
problem-solving skills.

DAY 1: VOCABULARY BUILDING (affixes)

On the first day, the students were being oriented of what they will
expect throughout the 15 days of summer camp. They were all very excited
for the different activities and lessons prepared for them. The first 3 days
focused on the vocabulary building and enhancing their pronunciation.
Specific topics on addressing such building are affixes, syllables, context
clues using synonyms and antonyms and homographs. There were
activities like tongue twisters, individual reading of words, bingo words and
drawings they had partaken.
Modules were created for them to address their learning needs. The
first module is a three-day series of learning English Vocabulary. This was
prepared for the students so that they will be able to give the meaning of
words not only by using the dictionary, thesaurus or online but also
through considering the group of letters added before or after a word.
The module will also teach them more about the proper way of
pronouncing words effectively.

What will be the Students’ Goal?

After studying this module, students should be able to:

• Pronounce words properly

• Engage students in actively thinking about word meanings, the
relationships of words and how we can use words in different
situations.

The campers were indeed enjoyed the activities they have partaken.
They gain and learn something about the discussions given to them and
play at the same time. They are more eager to look forward for the next day
activities.

DAY 2: VOCABULARY BUILDING (context clues)

The second day of the summer reading camp focus on the learning
context clues highlighting the synonyms and antonyms on every sentence.
This lesson is every important in building their vocabulary. Context clues
are the words and sentences that surround a word and help explain the
word’s meaning. Context clues are hugely important because their
comprehension and effective usage leads to academic success. They can
increase the child’s vocabulary, reading comprehension, and make children
better readers.

What will be the Students’ Goal?

This second day module aims to:

• Use context clues to find the meaning of unknown words.

• Recognize and identify synonyms and antonyms in sentences.

Activities prepared for this day was a BINGO games of words where
this game like a normal BINGO, have to cross straight line (either diagonal,
horizontal or vertical) in finding synonymous words of every word picked by
the teacher. This was so fun since only 1 winner can gain a BINGO among
the rest and have received a reward/ prizes. Other activities are worksheets
on identifying unfamiliar words on a multiple-choice type of assessment.
With all the fun and learning they had on this day, it was ended with grace
and left more excitement to them.
DAY 3: VOCABULARY BUILDING (homographs)

On the third day for the summer reading campers, focused on

recognizing the words with the same spelling but may be used in
different functions because of varied meanings or so called Homographs.
This can improve their lexical foundation, and can also improve their
English grammar in learning them. In an idiomatic sense, they were
hitting two birds with one stone. This lesson also catered their
pronunciation and diction in words provided to them.

What will be the Students’ Goal?

This third day lesson focus on:

• Understand what homographs are;

• Use homographs in a sentence; and
• Realize the importance of learning homographs.

On this 3rd day, they were asked to draw pictures based from the
exact used/meaning of the word used in a sentence. In this activity, they
were tasked to think wisely what specific meaning is intended before
drawing it. They were indeed happy in thinking out on this. Other
activities were answering their assessment worksheets provided to them
and Amazing Race. This game involved kinetically on finding clues and
follow tasks instructed in every station. They were all exhausted but
happy because they have enjoyed the game. This ended their vocabulary
building lesson, they will now move to the next phase of learning in the
camp.

DAY 4: READING COMPREHENSION
(skimming & scanning)

Fourth day has come, and this last two days for the first week focus
on the reading comprehension. Specifically, on the reading strategies –
skimming and scanning. Learning the different reading techniques and
when to use them is indeed important, especially under exam conditions
when time constraints come into play and decisions need to be made
depending on time availability and the importance of the task at hand. It is
a great pleasure to sit and enjoy reading, for it is one of the most beautiful
experiences one can have.

What will be the Students’ Goal?

On this fourth day, the students will be able to:

 The learner should be able to identify appropriate reading styles for

one’s purpose.
 The learner should be able to differentiate scanning and skimming
and;
 The learner should be able to use scanning and skimming for one’s
purpose.

The faces of the learners on this day, were quite stressed since this is
more on targeting their reading readiness. Knowing and using the reading
strategies might be tasking for them but still they were able to survive in
the end. Teacher campers reminded them the essence of reading for them
to be uplifted and inspired to read more and then learn more. Still, they
were all satisfied by the activities given to them with instilling play on the
lesson discussed.

DAY 5: READING COMPREHENSION
(intensive reading)

As the 1st week had closed, the 5th day activity lesson prepared for the
campers are on the application of Intensive Reading Strategy. This reading
strategy improves the power of expression, develop the skill of questioning
and answering, and students become interested in looking into details of
the text they come across as they find newer meanings being attributed to
the otherwise ordinary looking passages. Moreover, the benefits of intensive
reading include enhancing reading comprehension, helping students by
understanding sentence structure and developing critical thinking as
students have to answer all required questions after reading. It also
enhances collaboration among students, as it sometimes done in pair or
group work .

What will be the Students’ Goal?

On the 5th day, the students should be able to:

 Emphasize the accuracy activity involving reading for detail.

The last activity for the 1 st week of summer reading camp had certainly
digested all they have learned starting from day 1. It was a wonderful and
educational experience they have showcased among teachers and learners
during the 5 days. As a simple break, students were tasked to perform on
stage presenting all the learnings they have gained throughout the five
days. Some of them had danced, sang, dramatized and shared their
personal experiences. Prizes and certificates were given to them as they
have completed the first 5 day camp. With this, they are certainly more
eager to look forward on the next 5 – 10 days of the different activities and
rewards prepared for the summer reading campers.
DAY 5: July 29, 2022
Overall, the fits 5 days of Summer Reading & Numeracy Enrichment was
implemented smoothly, and it was a success. Teachers planned to continue the
project and hope the program will help advocates continuity in learning amidst covid-
19.
