Introduction and Objectives

Welcome to the compulsory part of your training as Historians. To become a good
Historian, you need to learn the historical facts well. You need to also show that you
possess the skills of a detective, and be able to find out more about the past
using clues and other information.
This is what the Historical Investigation (HI) project for Secondary 1 is about! It
gives you a chance to go beyond your History lessons in the classroom.
In this project, you will be able to:
(i) Create your own exhibit to teach others about the contributions of the
Chinese community.
(ii) Reflect on whether the contributions of the Chinese community contributed
to the development of Singapore.

What can I expect for my HI project?

You will be submitting both individual work and group work. This will take up 20% of
your History grade for the year. Through the year, you will go through the historical
investigation process as shown below:

Source Provenance of source:

X Adapted from an online description of a pauper’s hospital in

Singapore.

Health conditions in the 19 th century were very bad. The poor and sick were given
little access to medical treatment. Tan Tock Seng, an immigrant of Fujian descent
from Melaka who became a wealthy trader in Singapore, offered to donate $5,000
to set up a hospital for the poor. On 25 May 1844, the foundation stone for Tan’s
hospital was laid on Pearl’s Hill. The hospital was first called Chinese Pauper*
Hospital. It was later named Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

Inference: What does the source tell you about the early migrants’
contribution to education or healthcare in Singapore before 1942?

(Use the I.S.E writing structure)

Source X tells me that the early migrants contributed towards improving

healthcare in Singapore by setting up hospitals for the poor.
Source X states that “Tan Tock Seng, an immigrant of Fujian descent from
Melaka who became a wealthy trader in Singapore, offered to donate $5,000 to set
up a hospital for the poor.”
This shows that early Chinese migrants such as Tan Tock Seng contributed
towards building hospitals, which helped to provide cheap healthcare for the
people in Singapore.
