According to Richard & Rodgers (2003), an approach is the primary theory of language
that is used as the guide to teach the language itself, while the method is the overall plan to
represent the language material systematically. Technique is the specific strategy to reach a
certain goal in language learning. Imagine learning is like baking a cake. So, just as we need
a good recipe (approach) to bake a cake, The approach is like having the right recipe. Just
as a recipe guides us in choosing the ingredients and the general steps to make a cake, the
approach in education sets the overall plan and philosophy for teaching and learning. The
mixing and baking process (method) is like how teachers organize lessons, Just as we follow
a recipe to create a tasty cake, teachers follow a method to help students understand and
remember what they learn and the decorations (techniques) make learning fun and
interesting to shape knowledgeable and capable learners, just like adding finishing
decorations to a delicious cake.

Jeremy Harmer, a famous writer and teacher in the world of English teaching, says it's
really important to use lots of different ways to teach English in his book "The Practice of
English Language Teaching." He agrees with Richard and Rodgers, who also think that good
teaching means using lots of different methods and techniques that fit what the students
want to learn and achieve. An example of the method used for learning a language is the
Direct Method which aligns with the structural or grammatical approach that emphasizes
direct immersion in the target language and Paragraph writing is a specific technique used
within the Direct Method to reinforce language learning. This technique helps learners apply
the grammatical rules and structures in a practical context to encourage the use of
vocabulary and sentence structures promoting language fluency and expression. In this
example, the structural or grammatical approach is like the big idea for language learning, as
grammar is really important. The direct method is the way to do this, and it's all about
learning by being surrounded by the language and using it in real situations. When it comes
to writing paragraphs, this can help to practice grammar and language skills with writing
exercises that make sense.
