PURPOSE :

To provide guidance for purchasing of materials, formwork scheme preparation

formwork making, erection removal and checking of formwork during construction
SCOPE:

This procedure covers erection and removal of formwork and checking of formwork

PROCEDURE:
1. Pre-check:
 Check if cleaning and oiling form’s surfaces by removing the concrete properly clean
the shutters / mortar and protruding, if any. Check for health and stability of forms
and props.
 Formwork shall be made to the exact dimensions within the permissible tolerance as
mentioned below or as directed by Engineer in charge. Required thickness and quality
of steel / plywood shall be used to meet the requirement of design & surface finish.
 For beam bottom & slides, proper size of timber at required spacing shall be provided
to take the design loads / pressure considering sleeves, conduit anchors & inserts.
While designing form works, required construction stress during concreting shall be
pre – examined and adequate consideration shall be given.
2. Erection of formwork:
 Sufficiently rigid and tight to prevent the loss of grout or mortar from the concrete.
 Capable of providing concrete of the correct shape and surface finish within the
specified tolerance limits.
 The formwork may be of timber, plywood, steel or plastic depending upon the type of
finish specified/ required or as directed. Erect staging / shuttering shall be done as per
drawing /sketches in such a way that de-shuttering can be done easily including
provision for re-propping if required or planned.
 Check the location, line, level, plumb and dimensions of the formwork to ensure that
the deviations are within the permissible limits as per Clause.11 of page 25 of IS: 456.
 Provide bracing at proper places and intervals as per the formwork scheme to take
care of lateral loads and conspicuous construction loads.
 Apply mould releasing oil or emulsion before reinforcement steel is placed.
 Wire tying passing through beams, columns and walls shall not be allowed. In their
place bolts passing through sleeves shall be used.

 Check that all the shutters are properly aligned and fixed firmly with required lateral
supports and ties.
 Check that all the spanning members have proper bearing at the supports. Wedges or
jacks shall be secured in position after the final check of alignment.
 The following points shall be observed very carefully:
a) Joints of moulds shall be water tight. It is easy to check from the bottom and
make sure that no light is visible.
b) Props shall be on solid base, plumed, in one straight line and braced
horizontally and cross.
c) Tie bars in beams, walls and columns shall be at the correct place and fully
tight.
d) Wedges shall be fully secured and nailed with heads left out for easy
removal.
e) All saw dust, dirt any other unwanted materials shall be cleaned and hosed
out.
f) Provisions shall be made for walking over form work while concreting and
any other platform needed for movement of workers without any
disturbance to reinforcement.
g) Form work shall be safely erected in accordance with IS: 3696 Part –I & II
for scaffolding, IS: 4014 Tubular Scaffolding, IS: 8989-Safety code of
erection of scaffolding. Safety supervisor / steward should ensure that
Hazard Identification & Risk Analysis (HIRA) is followed for this particular
process.
 Check all the inserts/ embedment and openings are exactly placed as per the drawings.
3. Inspection of forms before concreting:
 In case of leakages, bulging and sagging immediate actions shall be taken by
Tightening wedges or adjusting by jack which must be done before the concrete takes
its initial set.
Removal of forms:

Time period for removal of shuttering should be as detailed below for OPC

a) Walls, Columns and vertical faces: 24 to 48 hours

b) Slabs (Props left under) 3 days
c) Beams-soffits (props left under) 7 days
d) Removal of props under slabs
Spanning up to 4.5 m-7 days
Spanning over 4.5 m-14 days
e) Removal of props under beams and arches
Spanning up to 6 m-14 days
Spanning over 6 m-21 days
f) Removal of props under flat slabs
Spanning up to 4.5 m-7 days
Spanning over 4.5 m-14 days
g) Removal of props under column capitals and strips between column capitals.
Spanning up to 4.5 m-14 days
Spanning over 4.5 m-21 days
h) Cantilever Slabs 14 days

4. Reuse of forms:
 The formwork shall be used carefully so that the same is not damaged by de-
shuttering action and in particular during the shuttering.
 Normally for timber formwork 5 to 8 uses are permissible only if the forms are
Properly cared for, stored and repaired after each use.
 After De-shuttering all the materials should be properly stacked and cleaned for next
repetition.
