3. Attempt questions based on specific instructions for each part. Write the correct question number in your answer sheet to
indicate the option/s being attempted.

SECTION A – READING SKILLS

1. Read the text carefully and answer the questions:
1. The role friends play in our lives has become significantly greater now than at any other time in our history. Today
many of us live and work great distances from where we were born or have grown up & are separated from our
original families. The pain we feel when we are away from our families can be significant.
2. The happiness of the individual relies on friendships that form a necessary human connection. It is perfectly normal
to need and want friends and depression is more prevalent among those who lack friends. They lack the intimacy and
richness friends can bring into our lives. Frequently friends reflect similar values to us. Yet these values are often
different from the ones we grew up with; they are the values we created for ourselves in our adult lives.
3. Communication skills are fundamental in all friendships. The more friends and acquaintances one has, the greater are
one’s communication skills. Some call these, people skills.
4. Like watering a plant, we grow our friendships (and all our relationships) by nurturing them. Friendships need the
same attention as other relationships if they are to continue. These relationships can be delightfully non-judgmental,
supportive, understanding, and fun-filled.
5. Sometimes a friendship can bring out the positive side that you never show in any other relationship. This may be
because the pressure of playing a 'role' (daughter, partner, or child) is removed. With a friend, you are to be yourself
and free to change. Of course, you are free to do this in all other relationships as well but in friendships, you get to
have lots of rehearsals and discussions about changes as you experience them. It is an unconditional experience
where you receive as much as you give. You can explain yourself to a friend openly without the fear of hurting a
family member. How do friendships grow? The answer is simple. By revealing yourself; being attentive;
remembering what is most important to your friend and asking them about it; put yourself in their position; showing
empathy; seeing the world through the eyes of your friend, you will understand the value of friendship. All this
means learning to accept a person from a completely different family to your own or perhaps someone from a
completely different cultural background. This is why we have learned tolerance. In turn, we gain tolerance and
acceptance for our own differences.
6. Friendships are made by being considerate which means all the communication skills come into play: active listening
skills, questioning skills, negotiation skills, reflecting content skills, reflecting emotion skills and editing yourself.
7. Friendships offer a great opportunity to learn about yourself because a friend can reflect back to you ‘how you come
across in the world’. They also allow you to practice skills in dealing with 'personal boundaries' by looking after
yourself as well as your friend. They help you develop resilience in relation to the wider society that would be
beyond your family.

Sir,
Subject: Educational counsellors needed in schools
Through the columns of your esteemed daily, I would like to raise an issue about the perplexitythat every student
confronts after appearing for the secondary school examination. This is an important phase in a student's life as he has to
decide what he aims at and how he would accomplish it. The students have to make a difficult choice from a number of
streams available to them at the senior school level for further studies. Students appear to be totally helpless and
sometimes even end up making the wrong choice, which they regret later. There is no valid mechanism to assess the
suitability of a candidate for a particular stream. If there was, the process of stream selection would have been much
easier for them. They must go for the stream they feel themselves to be good at and wherein they can have their utmost
growth, personally as well as professionally. But the irony is that they take subjects forced by peer pressure or parental
pressure without realising their own capabilities. Hence, I feel that there is a need for educational counsellors who can
help the students to understand their hidden qualities. They are required in every school on a regular basis. Parents and
teachers can also play a very important role in shaping young minds.
As it is a critical decision wherein the students need the utmost help, I request you to highlight this in your newspaper in
order to spread awareness about it.
Yours sincerely
Vinita

6. Which Life Would You Prefer - Safe or Adventurous?

by XYZ As compared to the older generation, the youth of today are greatly inclined to pursue adventurous activities
either for money or for fun. There is the latest craze for joining reality shows, rafting, rock climbing, mountaineering etc.
But which life would you prefer - safe or adventurous? The adventure tourism has grown leaps and bounds in recent
years because the adventurous life has become the latest craze. More and more youth are fascinated by adventure as it
both excites and rejuvenates an individual. Experiencing life in the lap of nature, rock climbing, river rafting, jungle
safari, mountaineering, skiing etc. is a unique experience altogether. This experience not only benefits physically but is
also enlightening for people. Adventure tour operators nowadays are flourishing only because of the increasing
popularity of adventurous trips among the people. People enjoy new experiences and seek out thrills, but, these activities
involve risk equally. These activities signify danger and attract people who are ready to gamble their personal safety.
People risk their lives in search of a rush of excitement or an unusual accomplishment.
The reality shows have also prompted our youth to take part in risky adventurous games by promising fabulous prizes
and stardom. Some people try these stunts at home putting their life in extreme danger. It is impossible to understand
why people engage in such activities. Ideally, one should prefer an adventurous life but within safe and reasonable limits.

10. Answer any five of the following questions in 40-50 words each:
i. The crofter was a generous, kind and friendly man. He not only gave the peddler shelter but also gave him food to eat
and tobacco to smoke. He also trusted him with his money though he was a stranger.
ii. The title of the poem suggests the importance of silence. The poem is about the importance of self-examination and
introspection. It is also an appeal for universal harmony.
iii. Every human being lives a life of ups and downs. Trials and tribulations in one's life spread the pall of despondency
over our dark spirits. We weave a flowery wreath around us which reminds us of our connection with the mother
earth. But the failures and disappointments make us disillusioned and we tend to become unhappy, depressed and
lonely. We get bogged down to the surroundings that we are unable to understand whether the exercise of finding
beauty around us is even worth or not.
However, a thing of beauty, which surrounds us from all sides, in all shapes and size, elevates our spirits and thus the
pall of gloominess can be removed. Beauty lies in the lap of nature that can bring us back to life. There are traps
which bind us to the materialistic things and keep us away from eternal happiness. The Earth is full of hatred, greed
and negativity. According to the poet, the gloom and sadness caused by this negativity fade away with the positive
vibes of the beautiful things that surround us.
iv. Sophie did not want Jansie to know anything about her meeting with Danny Casey because she knew that Jansie was
a blabber mouth. The moment Jansie knew of someone’s secret, the whole neighbourhood would get to know of it.
Sophie did not want to be ridiculed in front of others and be a laughing stock.
v. The lawyer wore pants and a tie and sometimes a coat whereas everyone else in the Story Department wore similar
khadi dhoti with a slightly oversized and clumsily tailored white khadi shirt. Thus, the lawyer stood out from others
at Gemini Studios as if he was a dispassionate man who did not take sides. Moreover, he was a logical man with no
emotional attachment whatsoever.
vi. Lewis Carrol shunned interviews for the fear of being projected as larger than life. He vehemently refused to give
interviews and kept his fans, acquaintances and interviewers at an arm’s length. This gave him a great sense of
satisfaction.
11. Answer any two of the following questions in 40-50 words each:
i. The programme “Students on Ice” was a huge success. When the students so visibly saw glaciers retreating and ice
shelves collapsing, they began to realise that the threat of global warming was very real. This must have forced them
to think of ways to save the world and its future from ecological imbalance.
ii. No, the Maharaja was not able to kill the hundredth tiger. He had shot at the tiger, but the bullet missed the target.
The tiger being old and infirm, fell unconscious at the sound of the gun. The Maharaja thought that it was dead. It
was actually killed by some other hunters. After shooting the last tiger, he was very happy that he proved the State
astrologer's prediction wrong. So he told his Dewan to bring the carcass in a procession and erect a tomb in its honor.
iii. The programme 'Students on Ice' was a success because it offered a life-changing exposure to the future generation of
policymakers at an age when they could absorb, learn and act. It provided them with inspiring educational
opportunities which would help them foster a new understanding and respect for our planet.

12. Douglas had an aversion to water since he was three or four years old. Once, while accompanying his father on the
surfboard, he was engulfed by strong waves and had a near-death experience and developed a fear in his heart of the
overpowering force of the waves. His fear grew stronger when he was thrown into the YMCA pool by a bully. His fear
haunted him till later in his life and deprived him of joy. Nevertheless, with time, he overcame his fear by first learning
to swim with the help of an instructor and then swimming alone across the Lake Wentworth in New Hampshire. “At last
I felt released — free to walk the trails and climb the peaks and to brush aside fear.” These were Douglas’s thoughts after

he had conquered the greatest fear of his life. When he overcame his fear of the terrorizing force of water that had
gripped him since ages, Douglas knew that there was nothing he could no longer achieve. He had experienced both the
sensation of dying and the terror that fear of it can produce. However, his strong determination and willpower helped
him to overcome his fear. Finally, he felt free to walk the trails, climb the peaks and do what he liked by brushing aside
his fear and live a fearless life.

Ordeals are the attrocities, oppresion and tortures she has to bear at the hands of her husband. The word 'ringed' has a
double association. It indicates not only the ring that 'sits heavily' on Aunt Jennifer's hand, but the difficulties in her life
that continue to surround her. The last stanza of the poem gives us an insight of the reality. Aunt Jennifer and other
women in her position all over the world never win. Even in death, they must conform to the patriarchal society. The ring
on her finger symbolizes the ordeals she must go through, dead or alive. Just as she created and controlled her
needlework, men in her life and the men dominated society controlled her.
13. Derry had gone into seclusion after he accidentally burnt his face. Mr. Lamb told him that there were many other things
than his face, to think of. His ideology about life, people and things had undergone a deep change since Mr. Lamb
had developed and inculcated in him the will to live and ability to face harsh realities of life. He made him realise that
the world had a full face not half like him and no one was bothered unless he paid heed to what others thought. Derry
told him the story of the beauty and the beast and said that he won't ever change and no one would love him. He was
made to realise that there were people in the world who were not bothered about looks like the Beauty who loved the
beast. Mr. Lamb made him realize that he had all his body parts intact. He could do better than others. Thus, Mr. Lamb
infused in Derry, a new spirit, zest and lease of life. He also talked about the man who shut himself indoors for fear of
getting hurt by everything but died in the room because a picture fell on him and killed him. This completely changed his
perspective towards life.

Dr Sadao’s final decision was the best possible one in the given circumstances. He has the instincts of a doctor. When
Tom, the prisoner of war, was found wounded, the first thing he did was to save his life. As a doctor he was duty-bound
to save lives. Next, he completed the duty towards his nation by informing the General about the presence of the
prisoner. Since he was a patriot, he accepted the killing of the prisoner by assassins to be sent by General. Since General
did not send the assassins for three days, he had to decide about the fate of the prisoner and his own duty towards nation
and humanity. His compassionate heart rose above the narrow confines of hatred and war and he helped the prisoner
escape and leave his country. As a doctor, Sadao could not have left the wounded prisoner of war unattended yet he
decided to operate upon him and save his life. However, at the same time he discharged his duty towards his nation by
informing the General about the enemy. And finally, the surgeon helped the enemy escape because there was no other
solution available that would have helped both, the prisoner and the doctor himself.
