ISDN transport over the system uses Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)
technology. The DSL signal consists of 144kB/s of bidirectional customer data
(2B+D), 4kB/s of overhead in support of network operations, and 12kB/s for
framing and timing functions. Using 2 Bit 1 Quarternary (2B1Q) line coding,
the DSL line rate is 80kB/s. The DSL transceiver incorporates a hybrid with
an echo canceller to achieve bidirectional signal transmission.

363-252-714, Issue 12 Applications

DSL technology operates over all loop plants using resistance design rules.
The maximum loop length for the SCU13 is 1300 W or 42 dB at 40 kHz.

The SCU13 can be configured as a Line Unit Loop Termination (LULT) or a

Line Unit Network Termination (LUNT). In the LULT mode, the SCU13
connects to subscriber ISDN-compatible equipment, and in the LUNT mode,
the SCU13 interfaces with an ISDN-compatible network. Depending on the
service option selected, the SCU13 could require one, two, or three timeslots.

Applications
A common timing source must be used by the switch and transmission
equipment so that synchronization exists throughout the ISDN circuit. The
composite clock (64 kHz) must be used to time the transmission equipment.

The SCU13 channel unit can be used in the Universal, SLC®-96 Mode 1, and
Integrated Network Access (INA) modes only. It cannot be used in SLC-96
Mode 2.

Provisioning configurations involving Universal, TR-8 Mode 1, and INA DS-1s

with Special Services digroup assignments are recommended. Provisioning
configurations involving INA DS-1s with fixed digroup assignments other
than Special Services digroup assignments are not recommended.

Note: Manual provisioning of the SCU13 is recommended in all

cases. Automatic provisioning of this channel unit should be avoided.

B1 and 2B modes are not currently supported by the SCU13 channel unit.

Installation
SCU13 installation procedures are presented in this section. Definitions,
channel unit positions, channel grouping, and restrictions on SCU13
installation are also discussed.

Definitions
When the SCU13 is provisioned for 2B+D service, three timeslots are
required. The SCU13 requires one physical cable pair or channel from the
switch to the odd channel in the Central Office Terminal (COT). The SCU13
also requires one physical cable pair or channel from the odd channel of the
SCU13 in the Remote Digital Terminal (RDT) to the customer’s equipment.

Channels

The term channel describes bandwidth used in the COT or RDT channel shelf.

SCU13 Description, Application, and Installation August 2004
Timeslots 363-252-714, Issue 12

A channel is either a shelf-slot such as 1-1, 2-3, or 7-96, or as a pair gain cable
address such as PG99, 1, and EPG5301A, 23. Pair gain cables are denoted as
F1 for the COT and F2 for the RDT.

Timeslots

A timeslot refers to the DS-0 contained in the feeder DS-1. Timeslots are
always referred to as riding on a DS-1.

Channel Unit Positions

Timeslot Position Descriptions

Provisioning ISDN channel units, especially when using the Timeslot

Interchanger (TSI), varies as to whether the channel unit is in the Right or
Left slot position.

With the FP-1055 configuration, the SCU13 channel is automatically

provisioned upon receipt of a card insert message based on the physical slot,
not relative to where other cards are located in relation to the SCU13 card.

Dual-channel slots 1/2, 7/8, 13/14, etc. default to the Left configuration, while
slots 3/4, 9/10, 15/16, etc. default to the Right configuration. Channels in slots
5/6, 11/12, 17/18, etc. are not automatically provisioned.

Up to three time slots are required for provisioning an SCU13 channel unit.
The user can override or force Left or Right default settings during channel
provisioning of an SCU13 card. Two ISDN channel service options, 2B+D
(Left) and 2B+D (Right), are used instead of the standard 2B+D configuration.

Default provisioning for an AB or CD shelf configuration is the same as for an

A, B, C, or D configuration.

Any Quad channel slot (such as a 24-channel DISC★S MX ONU) is

automatically assumed to be a Left configuration for SCU131 channel units.

Left and Right ISDN configurations for dual-channel slots are shown in
Fig. 1.3.

Figure 1.3: Dual Channel Slot ISDN Left and Right Configurations

Channel Allocation

Whether the Left or Right slot is used determines which channels the ISDN
card uses out of the distribution bandwidth.

Three channels can be used by the ISDN channel unit, one representing the
cable pair used to carry the ISDN circuit, and the other two representing dead
pairs whose distribution bandwidth is used by the ISDN circuit to provide
more than one timeslot.

The three possible channels used by the SCU13 are termed the primary,
secondary, and third channels. Each channel has a specific function,
depending on the service option for the channel unit. Table 1.A shows the
distribution bandwidth allocation at the RDT/ONU. Table 1.B shows the
distributed timeslot assignments per cable pair at the COT.

An example of how Table 1.A is used is that a Left channel in slot 1-1 would
use 1-1 as its primary channel, 1-2 as its secondary channel, and 1-4 as its
third channel at the RDT. Similarly, a Right channel in slot 1-3 would use 1-3
as primary, 1-5 as secondary, and 1-6 as third.

An example of how Table 1.B is used is that a Left channel in slot 1-1 with
service option 2B+D would use 1-1 as its primary channel, 1-2 as its secondary
channel, and 1-3 as its third channel at the COT. A Right channel in slot 1-3
with service option 2B+D would use 1-4 as primary, 1-5 as secondary, and 1-6
as third. Note the cable pair of 1-3 is used by the adjacent Right unit.

If one or more of the primary, secondary, or third channels is not available for
the SCU13 during a provisioning process, one of three things happens:

• From a menu interface, an error message displays, stating that one of the
three channels is not available. Table 1.A can then be used to determine
the exact channel in question.
• Provisioning menus can be accessed to delete provisioning or to assign
timeslots as necessary for proper operation of the channel unit.
• On inserting the SCU13, the Channel Unit Light-Emitting Diode (CU
LED) on the fuse and alarm panel, along with an audible indicator, reflect
a problem. The exact problem is determined by examining the alarm log,
which shows the channels that are mismatched or not properly
provisioned for the ISDN channel unit.

Channel Grouping
2B+D Service

Dual Channel Slots

The following rules and restrictions apply to channel slot provisioning and
installation for the SCU13 configured for 2B+D service in a dual-channel slot.
2B+D service is auto-provisioned by the Supervisory System (SS) or
Narrowband EMS. Channel services other than 2B+D must be manually
provisioned at the SS or Narrowband EMS. AFC recommends that the SCU13
be manually provisioned for all service applications.

• An SCU13 channel unit configured for 2B+D service requires three

timeslots on the feeder (DS-1) side and space in the channel shelf
corresponding three cable pairs. Fig. 1.4 and Fig. 1.5 illustrate the
grouping of channels from adjacent slots for one SCU13 and for adjacent

Dual Channel Slots 363-252-714, Issue 12

SCU13 channel units configured for 2B+D service in a Universal,

Integrated Network Access (INA), or Dynamic Timeslot Assignment
(DTA) mode.
• A Dual Channel Unit (DCU) must not be placed to the adjacent right of an
SCU13 configured for 2B+D service.
• When only one SCU13 is used, the next highest odd slot is available for use
by an SCU, as shown in Fig. 1.5 and Fig. 1.6. However, although the
SCU13 reserves space by an SCU, not all channel units are compatible.
The following SCUs can be used adjacent to a single SCU13.
— SCU1
— SCU3
— SCU4
• Channel units that may not be used in a slot immediately to the right of
an SCU13 are:
— SCU12
— SCU22
— SCU52
— SCU57
• If two SCU13 channel units configured for 2B+D are placed in adjacent
channel slots, the adjoining channel slot to the immediate right of the
second SCU13 must remain vacant. See Fig. 1.4 and Fig. 1.5.
• An SCU13 cannot be inserted in a channel slot that has been
user-provisioned for a different type of channel unit.

Installing the Card 363-252-714, Issue 12

Installing the Card

ALERT! The SCU13 uses certain semiconductor devices that can be

damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). Do not remove the SCU13 from
the protective packing container until time of installation. To equalize the
static charge on the SCU13 and the channel shelf, establish a body path to
ground using a ESD wrist strap connected to the ESD ground jack of the
Common Shelf. If storing or shipping the SCU13 becomes necessary, place
the SCU13 in a conductive shipping container or wrap it in aluminum foil to
prevent static buildup.

ALERT! When unplugging an external cable from any installed circuit pack,
hold the circuit pack in place while removing the cable.

The SCU13 is installed in the Central Office Terminal (COT), Remote Digital
Terminal (RDT), and DISC★S MX Optical Network Unit (ONU) channel
shelves. Use the following procedure to install the SCU13.

Note: Manual provisioning should be performed before installing

the SCU13 channel unit. Automatic provisioning of the SCU13
should be avoided.

1. Verify correct card received for installation. Contact your next level of su-
pervision if card received is incorrect or damaged.
2. Wear an approved ESD wrist strap properly connected to the ESD ground
connection on the lower right front of the common shelf.

ALERT! Channel units are susceptible to damage from ESD. To prevent

static discharge damage, use an ESD wrist strap. An ESD ground
connection is provided on the lower right front of the common shelf.

For first-time installation, go to Step 5. If installation is due to a failed

SCU13, continue with Step 3.
3. Remove the desired SCU13 channel unit from the channel shelf.

ALERT! When removing a channel unit, be sure that it does not touch
components on an adjacent unit. Contact with other components could
disable the entire system.

4. Pack the channel unit in an appropriate ESD-safe container.

5. Remove new SCU13 channel unit from shipping container.

ALERT! Channel units are susceptible to damage from ESD. To prevent

static discharge damage, use an ESD wrist strap. An ESD ground
connection is provided on the lower right front of the common shelf.

6. Inspect contacts on new channel unit. Contacts are located on connector

and back edge of card. Contacts should be clean and free from damage.
7. Place latch on SCU13 circuit card in open position and insert channel unit
into slot. While holding faceplate, position card onto guides and slide card
into slot until firmly seated.
8. Position latch on SCU13 circuit card in closed position. Verify that card is
firmly in place before closing latch.
9. Update office records. SCU13 installation procedure complete.

Audible and Visual Indicators

When the SCU13 is installed, both the alarm and loopback LEDs shown in
Fig. 1 illuminate for approximately one second and then the loopback LED
extinguishes. Should both LEDs remain illuminated, the channel unit is
defective and must be replaced. However, the unit might not be defective if it
is in an alarm state and a loopback or test is being performed on the unit.

If the system detects an error during the provisioning of an SCU13 channel

unit, an alarm sounds and a CU LED lights on the Alarm Unit of the COT
Fuse and Alarm Panel.

If the system detects an error after the SCU13 is provisioned, an audible

alarm sounds and a CU LED lights on the Alarm Unit of the RDT Fuse and
Alarm Panel. If the Loopback LED illuminates, the channel unit has been
placed in a test access or loopback mode.

The ALARM LED lights when trouble is detected on the U-interface. The
ALARM LED also lights when the far-end ISDN card cannot be detected. The
ALARM LED lights at the COT if the SCU13 does not link up to an
ISDN-compatible switch or if it does not see the far end ISDN card. At the
RDT, the ALARM LED lights if the SCU13 does not see the customer’s
equipment or the ISDN card at the COT.

Outside Plant Engineering

DSL technology operates over any loop plant using resistance design rules.
The maximum loop length for the SCU13 is 1300W or 42dB at 40kHz.

Provisioning 363-252-714, Issue 12

Provisioning
Provisioning consists of setting the channel unit options to the desired
function(s) using the SS or Narrowband EMS TUI. This section provides
detailed provisioning information for ISDN service over the system. The
SCU13 can be used at the COT, RDT or DISC★S MX ONU.

Overview
Options

The SCU13 has five user-selectable options:

• Card Mode
• Channel Service
• Sealing Current
• Zero-Byte Substitution
• Enable Multi-Point Embedded Operations Channel (MP-EOC)

Card Mode Option

The Card Mode Option is set for either Line Unit Network Termination
(LUNT) or Line Unit Line Termination (LULT). LUNT is the default setting
for COT operation and should be used when connecting to a Central Office
switch or a tandem source channel unit. LULT is the default setting for RDT
operation. The LULT setting should be used when interfacing to a Network
Termination (NT). Default options can be overridden for special applications.

Channel Service Option

The Channel Service Option allows the SCU13 to be provisioned for 2B+D
(Left), 2B+D (Right), B1+D, B2+D, 2B, B1, B2, or D-only operation. The
default setting is 2B+D, which serves most common applications. The 2B+D
setting requires three timeslots; the B1+D, B2+D, and 2B settings require
only two timeslots; and the B1, B2, and D settings require only one timeslot.

Note: If a service option other than 2B+D is selected, changing the

service option to the 2B+D setting at a later time could be difficult
because of timeslot allocation. If 2B+D service is anticipated but not
initially required, the ISDN circuit should be turned up as 2B+D to
ensure adequate bandwidth allocation.

Sealing Current Option

The Sealing Current Option determines whether the unit will source/sink, or
ignore sealing current. When the unit is provisioned for LUNT operation,
setting the sealing current to YES provides a path to ground for sealing
current coming from the Central Office switch. When the unit is provisioned
for LULT operation, setting the sealing current option to YES causes a
-48VDC sealing current to be applied to the tip and ring leads of the cable pair
leading to the NT1. This option defaults to YES.

August 2004 SCU13 Description, Application, and Installation
363-252-714, Issue 12 Zero-Byte Substitution Option

Zero-Byte Substitution Option

The Zero-Byte Substitution Option indicates whether a zero byte on one of the
bearer channels (B1 or B2) is allowed to pass through on the DS-1. When the
DS-1 carrying the ISDN circuit is set for B8ZS operation, this option can be
set to NO. When the DS-1 is operating with Alternate Mark Inversion (AMI),
this option must be set to YES. Setting this option to YES causes a bit to be set
in the D+ channel alerting the far end that a zero byte is to be substituted. In
either case, there is no restriction on the data that can be sent at a 64kbs rate
on either the B1 or B2 channels.

Note: A SONET DISC★S system operating in Universal mode does

not have AMI or B8ZS designations because there is no physical DS-1
span. However, for purposes of this discussion, it can be considered to
have a B8ZS designation.

Enable MP-EOC Option

The Enable Multi-Point Embedded Operations Channel (MP-EOC) is used to
select the EOC format for Universal or Non-Universal applications. This
option should be set to YES for Universal or DTA applications. The option
should be set to NO for INA and SLC-96 Mode 1 applications. This option
defaults to YES.

Automatic Provisioning Function

The SCU13 has an automatic provisioning function that causes all default
settings to be applied to the channel unit upon insertion into a channel shelf if
the channel shelf has sufficient channel space and timeslots assigned to
provide a 2B+D circuit.

ISDNL: and ISDNR: and F1:F2 Cross-Connects

The SS (FP-1055 and later) or Narrowband EMS TUI commands ISDNL: and
ISDNR: can be used to simplify the process of entering F1 and F2
cross-connects at the RDT. In a 2B+D system, the commands precede the first
channel identifiers and instruct the system to automatically assign the
appropriate following channels for F1 and F2 per Table 1.E for INA
cross-connects, or Table 1.F for universal DS-1 cross-connects. (Use ISDNL:
for SCU13s in left slots and ISDNR: for right slots.)

For example, in a universal DS-1 system with Left channel units using service
option 2B+D, after entering menu commands 3,5,4, the menu prompts are
as follows (bold, italic text indicates user-entered data):

NOTE: For ISDN, use ISDNL:, or ISDNR: before PG address for both F1 and F2

WC or COT-RDT ID = __

7. Enter RDT identification number and press <ENTER>. The system dis-
plays:
F1 = __

F1 represents the PG number for the cross-connect at the COT. It

includes both the PG cable identification number and the cable pair count
at the COT. For example, if the PG cable number is PG1 and the cable
pair count at the COT is 1, then F1=PG1,1. Unless ISDNL: or ISDNR: is
entered preceding the data, a cross-connect must be entered for each of
the three channels.
If ISDNL: or ISDNR: is enter with the cross-connect (F1=ISDNL:PG1,1)
the following channels are automatically assigned per Table 1.F.
Note: At the COT, when a right unit is installed next to a left unit,
and both units have a service option that uses three time slots (i.e.
2B+D), the right unit must add one to its first cable pair count (F1+1).
For example, a SCU13 in slot 1/2 (left) uses channels 1, 2, 3, the
SCU13 in slot 3/4 (right) will use channels 4, 5, 6 because channel 3
is used by the left SCU13.

8. Enter F1 cross-connect in accordance with Table 1.F. The system displays:

F2 = __

F2 represents the PG number for the cross-connect at the RDT/ONU. It

includes both the PG cable identification number and the cable pair count
at the RDT/ONU. For example, if the PG cable number is NPG1 and the
cable pair count at the RDT/ONU is 1, then F2=NPG1,1. Unless ISDNL:
or ISDNR: is entered preceding the data, a cross-connect must be entered
for each of the three channels.

Testing
The SCU13 provides faceplate-mounted jacks for access to the channel circuit.
All channel units of the system are compatible with the integrated Metallic
Test Access Unit (MTAU) and provide the interface as required for the remote
test units.

Note: The Metallic Test Access, Bridge Mode (command 5,5,2,1)

provides no valid test results for the SCU13 channel unit.

The system provides channel testing using internal channel unit diagnostics
inherent to the system. The SCU13 channel unit is equipped with a self-test
feature that is invoked upon installing the channel unit in the shelf.

Local Tests
Local testing from the channel unit is accomplished using the
faceplate-mounted jacks and indicators. The faceplate test jacks provide
access to the SCU13 Transmit (Tx) and Receive (Rx) lines for B1, B2, or D
channel testing and access. Testing is performed in both directions using the
KS20908 and KS20909 DDS test sets.

Diagnostic Tests
There are no channel unit diagnostic tests available for SCU13 channel unit
testing.

Maintenance
This section gives procedures to determine timeslot assignments, connect
channels to the test access jacks, perform loopbacks, and support MP-EOC
messages.

DS-0 Access
Timeslots assigned to each channel used by the SCU13 are determined by
using the SS or Narrowband EMS TUI. Use the following procedure to
determine the channels and associated timeslots for a specific SCU13.
Depending on the service option selected, the SCU13 uses up to three
channels. Refer to Fig. 1.7 for an example of how channels can be grouped for
a 2B+D service option. This information is provided so that the SCU13 circuit
card can be examined using a DS-1 test set.

1. Logon to SS or Narrowband EMS TUI. Main Menu displays.

2. Press 3 Channel Provisioning and <ENTER>. Channel Provision-
ing Menu displays.
3. Press 5 Time Slot Assignment and <ENTER>. Time Slot Assign-
ment Menu displays.
4. Press 5 Retrieve Channel Shelf and <ENTER>. The system prompts
for COT or RDT identification number and channel shelf number.
5. Enter the identification number and channel shelf number. The system
displays and/or prints a report that includes timeslot assignments and
other data for each channel within that shelf.

Connecting Channels B1, B2, and D to Test Access Jacks

The user can connect the B1, B2, or D channels to the faceplate test access
jacks via the SS or Narrowband EMS TUI using the following procedure.

1. Logon to SS or Narrowband EMS TUI. Main Menu displays.

2. Press 5 Maintenance and <ENTER>. Maintenance Menu displays.
3. Press 7 ISDN Maintenance Menu and <ENTER>. The system displays:

Note 1: The following procedure assumes B1 channel loopback

testing. The B2 or D channel is tested in the same manner by
selection from the menus instead of B1.

Note 2: Typically, these tests are more simply conducted from the
ISDN switch. The switch can command the channel unit to loop back
using the MP-EOC. This procedure is given for cases where the
switch does not have the required equipment or is not available.

The ALARM LED on the SCU13 faceplate (Fig. 1.1) illuminates if the unit’s
DSL is not linked to an ISDN-compatible switch. It is not necessary for the
DSL to be linked to perform this loopback test. To pass this test, an SCU13
ISDN channel unit must be installed and provisioned as a LULT at the
RDT/ONU in the corresponding channel shelf and slot. A LUNT-provisioned
SCU13 must also be installed at the COT. A digital data loopback test
performed from either end confirms that the ISDN channel units at both ends
are operational.

1. Logon to SS or Narrowband EMS TUI. Main Menu displays.

2. Press 5 Maintenance and <ENTER>. Maintenance Menu displays.
3. Press 7 ISDN Maintenance and <ENTER>. The system displays:
