Description
This document provides technical information for the SCU52 Office Channel
Unit Data Port Single Channel Unit.

The SCU52 provides the OCU DP portion of the two-card Digital Data System
(DDS) for the digital loop carrier system. Fig. 1.1 shows the faceplate for
SCU52 versions B and earlier, and Fig. 1.2 shows the faceplate for SCU52
version C and later.

Changes in Document
This document has been reissued for rebranding to reflect AFC corporate
identity.

Application
The SCU52 provides rates of 19.2 kb/s (including subrates of 2.4 kb/s, 4.8 kb/s
and 9.6 kb/s), 38.4 kb/s, 56 kb/s, switched 56 kb/s, and 64 kb/s.

Note: For 38.4 kb/s, switched 56 kb/s and 64 kb/s, an SCU52 card
version B or later is necessary.

1-2 Proprietary Information AFC

363-252-716 SCU52 Description, Application, and Installation
Issue 6, March 2004 Zero Substitution Option

The SCU52 offers error correction, zero substitution, latching loopback,

secondary channel, and customer channel loopback. The OCU DP provides
interface between the system and the customer drop. The OCU DP has a
receiver range of 18 kft over 22, 24, or 26AWG cable.

The SCU52B offers switched 56 kb/s operation that can be used by Local
Exchange Carriers to offer switched digital access via AT&T ACCUNET
switched 56 or equivalent 4-wire service. When the enhanced switched 56 kb
option is enabled and the local CPE is on-hook, call progress information is
passed to the CPE.

Zero Substitution Option

To ensure adequate ones density and sufficient signal transitions for proper
functioning of timing recovery circuits on the T1 span, the SCU52s provide a
zero substitution (or zero code suppression) option for rates of 56 kb/s and
lower. When operating at the 64 kb/s rate, the B8ZS mode should be used to
ensure adequate ones density.

Digital Data System Card Set Error Correction

Error correction methods are also provided by the DDS card set (SCU52 and
SCU57). For subrate service at 2.4, 4.8, 9.6, the eight-bit bytes are repeated
20, 10, and 5 times respectively. The error correction is based on a majority
voting scheme using the repeated bytes. For 19.2, 38.4, 56, and 64 kb/s service,
the error correction scheme is based on the (16, 8)
Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) code to derive a parity byte. If 38.4, 56,
or 64 kb/s service with error correction is desired, a second DS-0 will be
required. Error correction is not available for switched 56 kb/s service.

Latching Loopback Feature

To operate the latching loopback feature, the correct code sequences must be
transmitted to the channel unit. Once the correct code sequence is received,
the SCU52 remains in loopback until it receives the correct release code. The
latching loopback feature eliminates most of the restrictions on the test data
that can be transmitted.

Secondary Channel Capability

The secondary channel capability is an optional function that may be selected
during provisioning. This feature provides the transmission capability of a
low-speed telemetry channel added to the overhead control bits. The
maximum data rate of the secondary channel will vary dependent on the
primary data rate. Secondary channel capability is not available for switched
56 kb/s or 64 kb/s service.

Customer Channel Loopback Issue 6, March 2004

Customer Channel Loopback

The Customer Remote Test and Selection of Terminal Options are not
supported options for the SCU52 card. The Customer Remote Test is pre-set to
always ON regardless of provisioning options, and the Selection of Terminal is
pre-set to always OFF regardless of provisioning options.

Installation

ALERT! The SCU52 uses certain semiconductor devices that can be

damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). Do not remove the SCU52 from
the protective packing container until time of installation. To equalize the
static charge on the SCU52 and the channel shelf, establish a body path to
ground using an ESD wrist strap connected to the ESD ground jack of the
common shelf. If storing or shipping the SCU52 becomes necessary, place it
in a conductive shipping container or wrap it in aluminum foil to prevent
static buildup.

Restriction
When 38.4 kb/s, 56 kb/s, or 64 kb/s service with error correction is required,
and the shelf is provisioned for digroup pair (AB, CD) operation, the adjacent
right slot must be left vacant. The SCU52 may not be installed in either slot
47/48 or 95/96 in this mode. When the SCU52 is intended for use at less than
38 kb/s speeds, only one time slot is required.

Installing the Card

The SCU52 can be installed in any channel slot of a COT or RDT channel shelf
subject to restrictions. Insert the unit in the slot, ensuring the connector
mates properly with the connector in the channel shelf. Use the following
procedure to install the card.

1. Verify correct card received for installation. Follow local procedures for ob-
taining a new card if the card received is incorrect or damaged.
2. Logon to Supervisory System (SS). Main Menu displays.
3. Press 3 Channel Provisioning and then <ENTER>. Channel Pro-
visioning Menu displays.
4. Press 4 Retrieve Channel Parameters and then <ENTER>. The
system displays:

5. Enter COT or RDT identification number or CLLI™ Code-Bay/frame Loca-

tion and then press <ENTER>. The system displays:

6. Enter channel number or Pair Gain (PG) address of channel slot assigned by
system administrator and press <ENTER>. The system displays:
UNEQUIPPED Channel NOT PROVISIONED

If system does not respond with UNEQUIPPED Channel, verify that you
have entered the correct information in Step 4 and Step 5.
7. Make sure you are wearing an approved ESD wrist strap properly connected
to the ESD ground connection on the lower right front of the common shelf.
For first-time installation, go to Step 10. If installation is due to a failed
SCU52, continue with Step 8.

ALERT! Channel units are susceptible to damage from ESD. To prevent

static discharge damage, use an ESD wrist strap. An ESD ground
connection is provided on the lower right front of the common shelf.

8. Remove the desired SCU52 from the channel shelf.

ALERT! When removing a channel unit, be sure that it does not touch
components on an adjacent unit. Contact with other components could
disable the entire system.

9. Pack the SCU52 in an appropriate ESD-safe container.

10. Remove new SCU52 from shipping container.

ALERT! Channel units are susceptible to damage from ESD. To prevent

static discharge damage, use an ESD wrist strap. An ESD ground
connection is provided on the lower right front of the common shelf.

11. Inspect contacts on new channel unit. Contacts are located on connector edge
of card. Contacts should be clean, straight, and free from damage.
12. Place latch on SCU52 circuit card in open position and insert SCU52 into slot.
Note 1: When 38.4 kb/s, 56 kb/s, or 64 kb/s service with error
correction is required, and the shelf is provisioned for digroup pair
(AB, CD) operation, the adjacent right slot must be left vacant. The
SCU52 may not be installed in either slot 47/48 or 95/96 in this mode.

Note 2: When the SCU52 is intended for use at less than 38 kb/s
speeds, only one time slot is required.
