EXPERIMENT #1

Pre-Lab

Name: Date:
Grade & Section: General Chemistry 2

Phase Changes and Heating Curve of Water

Objectives:
In this experiment, students would be able to:
• illustrate the concept of phase change
• determine the heating curve of water

Materials:
• Metal stand with clamp
• 250mL beaker
• Thermometer
• Alcohol lamp
• Tripod
• Gauze mat
• Ice cubes
• Lab gown
• Goggles

Experimental Procedure:
1. Construct a heating setup using metal stand, clamp, tripod, gauze mat, and alcohol lamp.
2. Put ice cubes in a 250mL beaker.
3. Measure the temperature of ice cubes inside the beaker and record it.
4. Place the beaker in the heating setup and measure the temperature of water every 2 minutes.
5. Do this for 20 minutes.
6. Record the results on the table provided.

Guide Questions:
1. What happens to the temperature of water as time increases?

2. What happens to the phase of water as temperature increases?

3. In what time did the ice cubes turned into liquid water?
