Absorption Spectrum and Color

[Experiment 1]
(1) Sample solution
Eight test tubes are ready for use.
Confirm that all of them are completely dry.
Put four sample solutions (x = 0 to 4; 5.0 mL each) Note1 in the four test tubes.
The rest four are used to mix the diluted solution.
5.0 mL sample solution
+ 15.0 mL ethanol solution

Mix the solution by pouring it back

and forth between two test tubes
three or four times.Note2

Note 1: Make sure to record the concentrations of the sample solutions.

Note 2: If you happen to spill some amount of the solution, tell the instructor about it.

(2) Filling of the solution to an absorption cell
Before filling the absorption cells with the solutions, rinse them very well
with the solutions.
You prepare 20 mL of the diluted solution, but you only use several mL for the absorption spectrum measurements.
Thus, you can use about 15 mL for rinsing.

Fill the cell up to about 70-to-80% with the solution. water droplets

If there are fine air bubbles in the cell after filling it with the

70-to-80%
solution, flick the cell lightly with your finger to remove them.
flick!
Wipe water droplets on the outside of the cell with a KimWipe
fine bubbles
by pressing it against the cell. Don't scour the cell wall.

Prepare four absorption cells filled with the solutions with x = 0-to-3.
The fifth cell is filled with 50% ethanol solution.
x= 0 1 2 3 EtOH
When setting the cells in a cell holder,
the transparent sides should be in the light path.

(3) Measurement of absorption spectrum
See the instruction manual for the procedure to acquire absorption spectra.

Measured spectra are printed out.

The wavelength and the absorbance at the absorption maximum of each

spectrum should be recorded.

Report your results to the instructor. If there is no problem with your results,
clean up all labwares before proceeding to [Experiment 2].

All solutions are collected in a plastic jerrycan as liquid wastes.
