on a new sheet. Use free-floating decimals in all your calculations and in expressing your
answers. In compiling your solutions, please follow the sequence of the problems. Failure to
follow instructions, deductions will be applied. Box your final answers.
1. The required NPSH of a pump is specified to be 8 ft. Determine the vertical distance above
or below the pump axis from a vented surface of water at 25oC in a supply tank if suction side
friction losses are equivalent to 3.8 ft.

2. A venturi meter having a throat diameter of 38.9 mm is installed in a line having an inside
diameter of 102.3 mm. It meters water and the measured pressure drop across the venture
meter is 156.9 kPa. Determine the flowrate in gpm if the coefficient is 0.98.

3. A pump is used to deliver water from BAWADI reservoir that is situated at Mt. Cabuyao, Sto.
Tomas at a rate of 0.2832 m3/s. The water level in the reservoir is 1.280 m below the pump.
The pressure is assumed to be atmospheric at 98.62 kPa and the temperature of the water is
20oC. The total head loss in the suction pipe is 1.158 m of water. Determine the NPSH of the
pump used.

4. An orifice with a diameter of 3.94 in is inserted in a pipe of 7.87 in diameter. The pressure
gauges fitted upstream and downstream of the orifice meter gives a reading of 19.69 N/cm2
and 9.81 N/cm2. Coefficient of discharge for the meter is given as 0.6. Find the discharge of
water through pipe in m3/s.

5. Air is flowing in a venturi meter at a pressure of 620.5282 kPa and a temperature of 50 oF.
The pressure at the throat is 372.3169 kPa and the area is 14.4 ft2. The inlet area is 79.2 in2
and the coefficient is 0.98. Calculate for the mass flowrate of discharge.
