Check, measure and adjust the castor, camber, king pin

inclination, toe-in and toe-out of a car using wheel

alignment
Experiment No: Date:
Aim:
1. To check the balancing of the given wheels and correct the
same.
2. Using the computer wheel alignment machine, the wheel
alignment is inspected for the given vehicle. The camber,
castor, king pin inclination and toe in and toe out are inspected
and corrected according to the manufacturer’s standards.
Equipments and materials required:
1. Microprocessor wheel balancing machine with partner setup.
2. Wheel balance weights. (10g, 20g, 100g, 150g, etc.)
3. Four wheel computer wheel alignment machine with printer
setup.
Tools required:
Wheel spanner, hydraulic jack, chalk piece and basic mechanic
tools. Air compressor, Typre pressure gauge, Valve core remover, Tyre
tread depth gauge.
Procedure:
A. Wheel alignment:
1. Before performing the computer wheel alignment is necessary
to perform a pre-alignment check in the vehicle.
2. Remove all the non required mass inside the vehicle.
3. The tyre pressure on all the four wheels is inspected.
4. The bearing shake and the tightness of the wheel bearing are
checked.
5. The wheel balance of all the wheels, ball joints and steering
joints are checked and inspected.
6. The quality of the suspension and shock absorber is analysed.
7. The vehicle is correctly made to stop on the turning radius
gauge plate in front of the computer wheel alignment machine.
8. the levels of all four wheels are checked and cameras are fitted
on all the wheels. The cameras are connected to the computer wheel
alignment machine.
9. The straightness of the steering wheel is determined and using
the steering lock, the steering wheel is locked.
10. The manufacturer’s recommendation is taken from the saved
data of the computer. ( For all the makes of the vehicles, the
manufacturer’s wheel alignment data is already loaded)
11. The vehicle’s original data is displayed against the
manufacturer’s data in the screen of the computer.
12. the eccentric cam bolts on the upper arm or lower arm are
adjusted ( loosened or tightened ) in such a way that the caster and
camber angles are in acceptable ranges.
13. The nut connecting the end of the tire rod itself is loosened on
either side to adjust the toe in.
14. The centre of the tier rod is turned over to adjust the toe in.
after turning over; the two lock nuts are tightened as per
manufacturer’s standard.
15. All the adjustment nuts are tightened and their tightness is
checked.
16. Using the print option in the computer, the results are printed.
Generally for the rear wheels there is no too much change in caster,
camber or toe in.
Result:
Thus the wheel alignment for the given vehicle is performed using
a computer wheel alignment machine is carried out successfully.
