LESSON FOR: Money & Me – Source

POWER TRUTH: God has blessed me to be a blessing.

POWER VERSE: God can bless you with everything you need, and you will always have more
than enough to do all kinds of good things for others. ~ 2 Corinthians 9:8 CEV

OBJECTIVE: At the end of the series, the kids will understand that God blesses us to honor
Him and so that we can also be a blessing to others.

INTRODUCTION (Preschool, Primary, Preteens)

We are starting a brand-new series entitled Money and Me! All of us

here will be handling money. Some will even be managing huge amounts of money, either your
own or for the company you will be working for. That’s why it is important for us to learn at a
young age how to see money and how to handle it. Today, we will learn about the Source of
money or provision.

Picking Up Manna (Primary, Preteens)

CONNECT Materials: marbles, small buckets, chopsticks

It’s game time! Scattered on the ground are marbles. Our players will gather as many marbles
as they can using chopsticks and place them inside their buckets. At the end of one minute, we
will count how many marbles they were each able to gather. The player with the most marbles,
wins! (Preschool can also do a similar game without using chopsticks. They can do this after
the crafts, so they can use their own basket.)

Congratulations to our winner! You were very good at using a chopstick to pick up marbles!
Our lesson today is about the time God provided manna or food for the Israelites and all they
had to do was to pick them from the ground.

Exodus 16:1-36 CEV (Lesson Video for Preschool; Lesson Video &
WORD Short Preaching for Primary & Preteens)
SOURCE
Have you ever been on a long trip? During this trip, where did you usually eat? In our story
today, the Israelites were on a long trip, one that took them into the wilderness for 40 years. Do
you think there were any restaurants or supermarkets in the wilderness? Of course not! And do
you know how many Israelites were travelling at that time? More than one million!! More than a
million Israelites began complaining to Moses that they were hungry. Can you imagine how
much food they needed to feed a million people? That’s a lot of food!

Exodus 16:11-21 CEV 11 The Lord said to Moses, 12 “I have heard my people complain. Now
tell them that each evening they will have meat and each morning they will have more than
enough bread. Then they will know that I am the Lord their God.”

13 That evening a lot of quails came and landed everywhere in the camp, and the next morning
dew covered the ground. 14 After the dew had gone, the desert was covered with thin flakes
that looked like frost. 15 The people had never seen anything like this, and they started asking
each other, “What is it?”

Moses answered, “This is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat. 16 And he orders you to
gather about two quarts for each person in your family—that should be more than enough.”
17 They did as they were told. Some gathered more and some gathered less, 18 according to

their needs, and none was left over.

19 Moses told them not to keep any overnight. 20 Some of them disobeyed, but the next morning
what they kept was stinking and full of worms, and Moses was angry.

21 Each morning everyone gathered as much as they needed, and in the heat of the day the
rest melted.

The Israelites were in the wilderness after escaping from slavery in Egypt and they began
complaining to Moses that they were hungry. They even said they wanted to go back to Egypt!
Moses was angry at them; but God in all His mercy and grace provided food for the Israelites.
He made quail, a certain bird smaller than a chicken, come in huge quantities every night to
provide the Israelites with meat. Then in the morning, God sent them manna, which the Bible
described as something that tasted like honey wafers.

What was amazing was that God always provided the right amount of food every day. Every
Israelite had enough to eat. The greedy ones who tried to get a lot of food found out that their
extra food had worms the next day. God gave the Israelites all that they needed, while helping
them learn not to become greedy and to trust Him that there will be food again the next day.

POINT: God is faithful to provide for all that we need.

The Israelites ate the manna for forty years until they came to the land where they would
settle. Isn’t it amazing how God provided food for the Israelites? Forty years is a very long
time and because they were in the wilderness, it was not suitable to plant and grow any food,
nor were there any restaurants that they could go to. Yet God sent them food every day for
forty years and the Israelites did not go hungry. God wanted the Israelites to trust that He will
provide for them and that He is the source of their provision.

2
Maybe you might think, “How can God be the source of our provision?” The Bible says in
Psalm 24:1 “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world and all who live in it.”
Because everything belongs to God, then all that we have were given by Him. When we
realize that God is the source of all that we need, we can stop worrying because we know that
as His children, He will surely provide for us. Not only that, we are able to share more,
because all that we have actually come from God.

POWER TRUTH: God has blessed me to be a blessing.

POWER VERSE: God can bless you with everything you need, and you will always have more
than enough to do all kinds of good things for others. ~ 2 Corinthians 9:8 CEV

POINT TO JESUS (Preschool, Primary, Preteens)

Manna appeared on the ground each day as thin flakes like frost. The Israelites gathered it,
ground it like grain, and made it into cakes that tasted like honey. For the Israelites, the manna
was a gift – it came every day. It satisfied their temporary physical need. In John 6:48-51 Jesus
compares himself to manna. Christ is our daily bread who satisfies our eternal, spiritual need.

John 6:48-51 (ICB)“I am the bread that gives life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert. But still
they died. Here is the bread that comes down from heaven. If anyone eats this bread, he will never
die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats this bread, he will live forever.
This bread is my flesh. I will give my flesh so that the people in the world may have life.”

PRAYER (Preschool, Primary, Preteens)

Lord, we thank You that You own everything and that You hold all things in Your hands. Thank
You because you know our needs. Thank You for providing for us. Forgive us for doubting You
and for worrying about the things we need. Help us to trust You more. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

CRAFTS Basket of Manna (Preschool)

Materials: Colored paper, glue, cotton or bread

Instructions: Follow the instructions to make the basket in this video: https://www.youtube.com/
watch?v=QGDVsSopF24 or search for “KIDS Church| Money & Me - Source” in Youtube.
Prepare cotton balls to put inside the basket to represent the manna.

Spiel: Great job on your basket of manna! Let your craft remind you of the time the Israelites
were in the desert where there was no food, God provided food for them the whole time they
were there – 40 years! God is indeed the source of our provision. Do you know why? Because
everything belongs to Him (Psalm 24:1). All that we own – our home, our clothing, the food we
eat, our money and everything else – were given by God. Our parents may have worked hard
to earn them but even all their knowledge and skills come from God because He is the one
who gave us the ability to produce wealth (Deuteronomy 8:18).
