words or fragments to describe. (Tiger orange.) May give limited
details or repeat another student’s details.
❑ I Intermediate uses simple statements to describe (Tiger is
living.) and may use more details (Tiger orange and black.) but
may hesitate frequently to think about how to communicate what
is wanted or may exhibit errors.
❑ A Advanced uses complete sentences to describe and can
elaborate on details, but may make some errors, especially when
trying to form more complex statements. (A tiger is orange and
black. Tiger is a living thing.)
❑ AH Advanced High uses a variety of statement structures
nearly comparable to native English-speaking peers. (A tiger is
orange with black stripes. It is a living thing. It can move fast.)
Can use English grammar structures and complex sentences
to describe but may have minor acquisition or vocabulary gaps
or errors.
Rubric Date

may also be limited to recently practiced words and phrases.
Some responses to questions may not match task at all.

more details but may hesitate frequently or may exhibit errors.

❑ A Advanced uses complete sentences to retell the story. (I

plan.) May make grammar errors or lack some vocabulary. (the
grasshopper play.)
❑ AH Advanced High uses a variety of statement structures
without hesitation and can vary and adapt language to his/her
needs. Has a vocabulary nearly comparable to native English-
speaking peers. (I will tell a story about an ant and a grasshopper.
The ant is smart and the grasshopper is lazy. The ant worked hard
in summer, and had food in winter.)
