a. Project Director briefed the participants  Apropos the minutes of Pre-CDWP meeting
through a detailed presentation. He added dated 09.06.2023, this office did not receive any

would have participated. However, Wapda

intrusion. According to estimate, half of Keti
Bunder Taluka has been badly affected.
Moreover, two tapas in Taluka Ghorabari and
6 Dehs in Taluka Mirpursakro have lost their
productivity due to sea intrusion of sea water.
In Kharochan, Shah Bunder and Jati Talukas
of Sujawal District, at least 03 Tapas have lost
their fertility due to sea intrusion. As for Thatta
District is concerned 6 Dehs have been totally
eroded and 11 Dehs are partially damaged.
The optimum relief would be a flow of 10 MAF
water downstream of the Kotri Barrage, but
this may not always be feasible.
Nevertheless, significant relief can be
anticipated by building coastal. In the current
project, a sea protective dyke of 18 miles will
be built having height of 18 to 20 feet and top
width of 18 feet , stone pitching overlying
Geo-membrane on water front, along with
different inlet structures and bridges.
b. Chief (Water Resources) M/o PD&SI added A study conducted by Federal Flood Commission
that the Feasibility Study of Sindh Barrage in 2005 “Study on Water Escapages below
Project is under implementation by W Kotri to check Seawater Intrusion “ to address
that unresolved agenda of Water Apportionment
Accord 1991 which concluded that 5,000 cusec
discharge (3.5 MAF annually) throughout the year
and approximately 5 MAF as flood flows each
year will check the sea-intrusion at 53 km from
river mouth. Wapda has proposed twin barrage
system with a gross storage of 2.2 MAF about 45
km upstream of Indus River mouth. Further, two
canals on left and right bank have also been
proposed with 3,000 and 2,000 cusecs discharge
capacities to meet the water supply, agricultural
and environmental flows requirement for
checking the sea water intrusion. It has been
found that with Sindh Barrage Project, the fresh-

sea water interface will be further pushed towards
sea with considerably less water as determined in
2005 study of Federal Flood Commission.
b. Wapda has prepared a comprehensive plan for
integrated management of Coastal region which
caters for water storage, water supply to nearby
communities, augmentation of irrigation supplies
(if required) besides protection of Coastal area
and checking the menace of sea water intrusion
through construction of twin barrages, reservoir
dykes (80 km on each side), left and right bank
canals (54 km on left & 60 km on right), Coastal
protection dykes (193 km covering 50% of
Coastal belt).
