Document Revisions
• This document has been reissued for rebranding to reflect AFC corporate
identity.
• Due to the evolution of AFC's DISC★S Element Management System
(EMS), the name of this product has gone through some changes. This
document uses the term Narrowband EMS to refer generically to the
Supervisory System, MarcView Voice, and NarrowbandManager products.
The functionality and menuing of these products are similar and the
procedures described in this book are universal to all of them.
• The term Broadband EMS refers to either MarcView Data or
BroadbandManager

Description
DSL technology allows digital access to customers over the present, in-place,
two-wire loop plant. A DSL is a 160 kbaud, two-wire loop also known as a
U interface. The DSL allows Basic Rate Access (BRA) digital services to be
provided to end customers via ISDN. The DSL line rate of 80 kbaud
(equivalently 160 kbits using 2B1Q encoding) is divided into 12 kb/s for
synchronization words, 144 kb/s for customer data (two 64 kb/s B channels
and one 16 kb/s D channel, i.e., 2B+D) and 4 kb/s for DSL overhead functions.

The SCU41 is an intelligent channel unit that converts subscriber and

signaling digital data over the DSL into B channel data for transport over
DS-0 channels, D channel data for transport over 1/4 DS-0 channels, and
maintenance data for transport over the GR-303 Embedded Operations
Channel (EOC). The SCU41 channel unit converts these pieces from the DS-1
carrier onto the DS-1 in the other direction as well.

Features and functions

Applications
The SCU41 is used in a DISC★S Remote Digital Terminal (RDT) channel
shelf only. It cannot be used in an Optical Network Unit (ONU). The SCU41
requires a Local Digital Switch (LDS) compatible with the requirements of
GR-TSY-0000303, which supports 4:1 TDM on the D channel as well as
provisioning through the Common Management Information Service Element
(CMISE) interface. For more information on GR-303 applications, consult the
DISC★S GR-303 Application Engineering practice, Section 363-250-110.

The SCU41 must be directly integrated with the LDS rather than with a
Central Office Terminal (COT). No COT complement card exists. For
applications that do not provide direct GR-303 integration, SCU13 or SFU13

channel units should be used. The SCU41 always functions as a Line Unit
Line Termination (LULT). The SCU41 provides a point-to-point ISDN EOC
from the card over the DSL to the Network Termination (NT). Intermediate
devices such as ISDN loop repeaters may be placed between the SCU41 and
the NT. However, LDS control of these devices for maintenance purposes is
limited.

Use of the SCU41 channel unit requires that the DISC★S common equipment
cards consist of the CPU 5, TRU 2, and SPU 3 common card set or later.

Channel Unit Features

Basic Rate Access

ISDN Basic Rate Access (BRA) service capability is based on 2B+D channels.
The two B channels are transported as independent, byte-oriented 64 kb/s
channels. The D channel contains signaling and routing data for the B
channels and possibly customer packet data. Both B and D channels are clear
channels in the sense that there are no constraints of any kind on the
transmission of logical information.

The B channels on the SCU41 are most likely to be concentrated by the LDS.
After the LDS concentrates these channels, a timeslot connection between the
SCU41 and the feeder DS-1 circuit is only in place during a call. The LDS and
RDT exchange information on placement of the B channels using the Timeslot
Management Channel (TMC). In some cases, the LDS does not concentrate
the B channel. Then, using the CMISE interface, the LDS provisions the
SCU41 channel unit to provide full-time B channel connections to the feeder
DS-1 circuits.

The D channel connection from the SCU41 channel unit to the feeder DS-1 is
always full time. As indicated by the term, 4:1 D channel multiplexing, up to
four SCU41 cards may share one feeder DS-0 to provide four 16 kb/s D
channels over one 64 kb/s circuit. Using the CMISE interface, the LDS must
provision the SCU41 to establish which feeder DS-0 and quarter DS-0 is used
for each ISDN circuit. In most cases, the CMISE interface is invisible to the
user.

The SCU41 channel unit provides sealing current at all times toward the
customer drop.

Loopbacks

As part of the DSL hardware, there is circuitry to provide various loopbacks

toward the DS-1 carrier. In addition, the SCU41 channel unit can transmit
commands to the NT and telephone set to provide loopbacks toward the DS-1
carrier for Bit Error Rate (BERT) testing done by the LDS. The LDS may loop
channel B1 only, channel B2 only, or 2B+D at either the SCU41, the NT, or the
telephone. All loopbacks must be initiated by the LDS.

Performance Monitoring 363-252-729, Issue 4

Performance Monitoring

Performance Monitoring is not currently supported by the SCU41 channel

unit.

Faceplate Features
Faceplate LEDs

The red alarm LED located on the faceplate is illuminated when any alarm
condition is declared. It is extinguished when the alarm is cleared. This LED
is not illuminated for a status change condition.

The yellow loopback LED located on the faceplate is illuminated when a

loopback is in progress and extinguished when the loopback is released.

Faceplate Jacks

Dual BANTAM test access jacks, one each for Transmit (TX) and Receive (RX),
are provided on the faceplate of the SCU41 for future test access. These jacks
are presently unused.

Channel Unit Diagnostics

Channel unit diagnostics are not available for the SCU41 channel unit.

Metallic Test Access

The SCU41 channel unit features Metallic Test Access Unit (MTAU) relays,
which allow full splitting access to the customer drop. The test relay may be
activated by the LDS either through the No Test Trunk (NTT) interface or
through software commands. The test relay may also be activated through the
Supervisor System (SS) for manual access to the drop.

Restrictions
Depending on the circuit type of ISDN service and the shelf configuration, the
SCU41 can use the timeslots associated with three physical card locations.
The timeslots are programmable through Channel Unit Data Link (CUDL)
output bytes in the SCU13 emulation mode. In the SCU41 mode, the channels
used depend on the physical address, D-channel multiplex type, and 3-DS-0
pair select bit.

363-252-729, Issue 4 Installation and Testing

There are no slot restrictions on using the SCU41 channel unit. Up to 48

SCU41 cards may be placed in one DISC★S channel shelf. The SCU41
channel unit could be used in an MX ONU, but not in a FITL-A ONU. The LDS
may impose restrictions on the number of ISDN circuits in the RDT,
depending on the type and configuration of the LDS.

Installation and Testing

ALERT! The SCU41 uses certain semiconductor devices that can be

damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). Do not remove the SCU41 from
its protective packing container until time of installation. To equalize the
static charge on the channel and the channel shelf, establish a body path to
ground using an ESD wrist strap connected to the ESD ground jack of the
common shelf. If storing or shipping the SCU41 becomes necessary, place it
in a conductive shipping container or wrap it in aluminum foil to prevent
static buildup.

Verification
F1:F2 Cross-Connects

The SCU41 slot must be associated with a GR-303 Call Reference Value (CRV)
at the RDT. Assign a CRV only to the B1 channel (the odd channel slot) of the
SCU41. A CRV cannot be assigned to the B2 channel (even channel slot) of the
SCU41. CRVs may be assigned at system turnup or on individually as lines
are placed in service. If CRVs have been assigned at system turnup, this
section is not required. For more information on CRV assignment, refer to the
DISC★S GR-303 Application Engineering practice, Section 363-250-110.

If CRVs are assigned on a per-line basis, the F1/F2 menu can be used to assign
the CRV as described in Verification. Alternatively, the CRV can be assigned
directly by using the GR-303 Channel Assignment menu on the Supervisory
System (SS) or the DISC★S NarrwobandManager.

If installed, the F1:F2 cross-connects are verified using the SS/Narrowband

EMS. By installing and verifying the F1:F2 cross-connects, you are able to
make cable pair assignments at the COT or RDT. Use the following procedure
for verifying the cross-connects and displaying or printing the Channel Shelf
