DCU14 Single-Party Service Dual Channel Unit

Description
This document provides technical information for the DCU14 Single-Party
Service Dual Channel Unit (Fig. 1.1).

Figure 1.1: DCU14 SPS Channel Unit

The DCU14 mounts in a single slot of the channel shelf. This channel unit
provides two independent channels, each having a two-wire single-party
Message Telephone Service (MTS). It is a current-sink circuit that provides
interface between the subscriber and the system. Each DCU14 channel
supports loop-start signaling, detecting ringing, and reverse battery. Off-hook
and on-hook status indication is also provided. The DCU14 is compatible with
rotary and dual tone multi-frequency (DTMF) dialing, and is equipped with
forward disconnect and on-hook transmission capabilities.

AFC Proprietary Information 1-1

DCU14 Description, Application, and Installation 363-252-732
Changes in Document Issue 2, March 2004

Subscriber channels served by the DCU14 may be integrated to a local digital

switch with a digital interface meeting the requirements stated in
TR-TSY-000008, Digital Interface Between the SLC®-96 Digital Loop Carrier
Systems and a Local Digital Switch.

The DCU14 model number, revision level, and date of manufacture are coded
in the unit’s nonvolatile memory, allowing an operator to access card inventory
information from the Supervisory System (SS).

Changes in Document
This document has been reissued for rebranding to reflect AFC corporate
identity.

Installation

ALERT! The DCU14 uses certain semiconductor devices that can be

damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD):

• Do not remove the DCU14 from the protective packing box until time of
installation.
• To equalize the static charge on the DCU14 and the channel shelf,
establish a body path to ground, using an ESD wrist strap connected to the
ESD ground jack.
• To prevent static buildup when storing or shipping the DCU14, place it in
a conductive shipping container or wrap it in aluminum foil.

Installing the Card

The DCU14 can be installed in any channel slot of a Central Office Terminal
(COT) or Remote Digital Terminal (RDT) channel shelf. Use the following
procedure to install the DCU14.

1. Verify correct card received for installation. Contact AFC if card received is
incorrect or damaged.

Issue 2, March 2004 Testing

Testing
General
The DCU14 contains a faceplate-mounted jack for access to the channel
circuit. All channel units are compatible with the integrated Metallic Test
Access Unit (MTAU), and provide the interface as required for the remote test
units. The system provides channel testing, using internal channel unit
diagnostics inherent in the system.

Local Tests
Local testing from the channel unit may be accomplished by using the
faceplate-mounted jack and a D3/D4 Portable Test Set.

Diagnostic Tests
The system can perform diagnostic tests to verify the following DCU14
functions:

• Off-hook status
• Ringing
• Reverse battery

The results of these tests are recorded and maintained in the SS for later
analysis. Routine diagnostic reports are maintained in the SS for display or
printing, until new diagnostic reports are generated.

Demand Diagnostic Tests

Demand diagnostic test procedures should be used when a small number of

channel units are to be tested. Use the following procedure to perform demand
diagnostic tests on a DCU14.

ALERT! Demand diagnostic tests can be service-affecting. Before

proceeding, be sure that the channels you plan to test are not connected,
and/or that the subscribers have been notified.

1. Log on to Supervisory System. Main Menu is displayed.

2. Press 5 Maintenance and <ENTER>. Maintenance Menu is dis-
played.
3. Press 4 Channel Unit Diagnostics and <ENTER>. Channel

If the channel unit passes the diagnostic tests and an additional channel
unit is to be tested, press <ESC> repeatedly to return to the Channel
Unit Diagnostics Menu, and repeat Step 4 through Step 7 for each
channel to be tested.
