Power Electronic
There are several kings of converters based on the source input voltage and the output voltage
and these falls into four categories namely the AC to DC converter known as the rectifier, the
AC to AC clycloconverter or frequency changer, the DC to DC voltage or current converter, and
the DC to AC inverter.

There are several types of

converters used for energy
conversion and control. Here are
some commonly used types:

1. AC to DC Converters (rectifiers) : These converters, also known as rectifiers, convert

alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). They are widely used in various applications,
including power supplies, battery charging systems, and electric vehicle charging stations.

2. DC to AC Converters (inverters) : Also known as inverters, these converters convert direct

current (DC) to alternating current (AC). Inverters are used in applications such as solar power
systems, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and electric vehicle inverters.

3. DC to DC Converters: These converters convert DC voltage from one level to another to meet
specific power requirements. DC-DC converters are commonly used in portable devices,
automotive electronics, and renewable energy systems like solar-powered charging systems.

4. AC to AC Converters: These converters convert AC voltage at one frequency to AC voltage at

another frequency. They are used in applications such as motor drives, adjustable speed drives,
and voltage regulation systems.

5. AC to AC converters Cycloconverters : Cycloconverters are specialized AC to AC converters

that directly convert input frequency to a lower or higher output frequency. They are mainly
used in high-power applications like induction heating, industrial motor drives, and railway
traction systems.

6. Matrix Converters: Matrix converters are bidirectional AC to AC converters that do not

require bulky energy storage elements like capacitors or inductors. They provide direct
conversion between different voltage and frequency levels and find applications in electric
vehicles, aerospace, and renewable energy systems.
