Quadratic Eqution LP
Quadratic Eqution LP
Quarter 1
Topic: Chapter 1
Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of quadratic
equations, inequalities and function, and rational algebraic equations.
Learning Competency: solves quadratic equations by: (a) extracting square roots; (b) factoring;
(c) completing the square; and (d) using the quadratic formula. M9AL-Ia-b-1
I. OBJECTIVES
1. Cognitive Determine the pattern used in solving for the roots of a
quadratic equation.
2. Psychomotor Solve quadratic equations by factoring
II. INTRODUCTION
A. Prayer
B. Checking of Attendance
The different types of factoring were already discussed in your Grade 8 Mathematics: common
factor, the difference of two squares, sum and difference of two cubes and perfect square
trinomial, and the likes. The principles of these mathematical concepts will be applied in our
topic, finding the roots of a quadratic equation by factoring.
A. MOTIVATION
B. DISCUSSION/LECTURE
Before we proceed to our next topic, let us have a review first. Last time we tackle about
quadratic equations, who can state the meaning of quadratic equation and its standard form
Before we proceed to our next topic, let us have a review first
Note: When constant is 0, the quadratic equation will be of the form ax2+bx=0
x+6=0
x=-6
Therefore , the solutions of this equations are 0 and -6. For equations of this forms, one
root will always be equal to zero.
Note: There is an easy way to solve for x. The roots of quadratic equation of the form
ax2+bx=0 are x=0 and x=-b/a
Solve, 11x2-13x=8x-3x2
Transform the equation into standard form
We simplify the equation by combine same variable and exponent on one side :
11x23x2-13x-8x=0
Simplifying the equation will give us: 14x2-21x=0
Now using the easiest way to get the roots, The roots of quadratic equation of the form
ax2+bx=0 are x=0 and x=-b/a.
X=-b/a =-(-21)/14 =21/14 =3/2
Therefore the solutions of this give equations are x=0 and x=3/2
Solve, 7x2+18x=10x2+12x
Transform the equation into standard form: 7x2+18x-10x2-12x=0
Simplifying the equation will give us: -3x2+6x=0
Using the short cut: x=-b/a =-6/-3 =2
Therefore the solutions for this equations are x=0 and x=2
Solve the equations without factoring, Instead use the fact that the roots of ax 2+bx=0 are
x=0 and x=-b/a
What will happen IF OUR CONSTANT IS NOT ZERO? What will happen and what are
we going to do?
Factoring may also be used to solve a quadratic equation when none of the constants
a,b,c is zero.
a. Solve x2+9x=-8
b. Solve 2x2-5x-3=0
c. Solve 9x2-4=0
C. PRACTICE EXERCISE( SEATWORK/ QUIZZES) w/ answer key
Factor Then Solve!
Find the roots of the following by factoring. The boys will answer numbers 1-5 and the girls will
answer numbers 6-10
D. GENERALIZATION
How do you solve equations by factoring?
Expected Answer: Quadratic Equations can be solved using the following steps:
Write in the standard form
Find the Factors of the left member of the equation
Apply the zero product property
Solve each resulting equation
Check the values of the variable obtained by substituting each in the
original equation
