On July 16, 1990, a 7.8

magnitude earthquake struck
near Mount Pinatubo in the
m

Philippines, shaking
Earth's crust beneath the
volcano. The earthquake
caused landslides, local
earthquakes, and increased
steam emissions.

In March and April 1991, molten

rock triggered small earthquakes
and powerful steam explosions,
causing thousands of small
earthquakes and sulfur dioxide gas
emissions.
