    Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS), also known as hyaline membrane disease, is a serious lung condition in premature babies caused by a lack of surfactant. Surfactant helps keep the alveoli inflated during breathing. Without enough surfactant, the alveoli can collapse, making breathing difficult. Therapies include administering artificial surfactant via endotracheal tube, oxygen therapy, ventilation with CPAP or PEEP to prevent alveolar collapse, nitric oxide to improve oxygenation, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation as a last resort. Supportive care such as keeping the baby warm is also important.
