Exercise No. 8
Soil Acidity and Adjusting Soil pH

INTRODUCTION
Soil acidity and pH are crucial for plant health and productivity, as they affect
nutrient availability, microbial activity, and overall plant growth. A low pH indicates higher
acidity, while a high pH indicates alkalinity. Soil acidity affects the solubility of essential
minerals, making certain nutrients less available to plants. High soil acidity can lead to
toxic elements like aluminum and manganese, harming plant roots and hindering growth.
To maintain optimal growing conditions, soil pH can be adjusted using lime application,
elemental sulfur, or organic matter amendment.
Regular soil testing and monitoring are essential for determining current pH and
monitoring adjustments. Understanding soil acidity helps in selecting appropriate
amendments and managing nutrient deficiencies or toxicities effectively.

METHODOLOGY
In 2 kg of garden soil that has been screened or cleansed to remove large pebbles
or plant debris. Then 12 pieces of 3.5 oz. plastic salad cups. Antacid (Kremil-S):12 pieces;
crushed or powdered, (corn or munggo): 36 pieces of seeds. Vinegar (100 mL); Marking
pen (or masking tape, a ruler, and a ball pen) Plastic syringe (10 mL).

Treatment Amendment
T0 None (control)
T1 10 mL vinegar
T2 10 mL vinegar + 1tablet kremil-S
T3 10 mL vinegar + 2 tablets kremil-S
T4 1 tablet kremil-S
RESULT AND DISCUSSION
You’ll need 12 plastic cups, garden soil, a got hot nail, a knife, or a drill, vinegar,
and antacid tablets (kremil-S) to complete this experiment. First, use a hot nail, knife, or
drill to make a few holes in the cups’ bases. Then, gently fill each of the 12 cups with
garden soil until they are about completely filled, and mark each cup with a number (T0R1,
T0R2, ect.). Continue these two cups with label “T0” aside to use as controls. In order to
make the other cups, go through the treatment guide one at a time. Put the amendment,
using the above table as a reference, after transferring the soil from the cup into a clean
area. Before using, crush the antacid pills and carefully mix or stir the soil with the
amendment for at least a minute before putting it back in the plastic cup. After putting the
soil back, use a syringe to inject 10 mL of water into the T0, T4, and T4 containers. Verify
that the soil in each cup is just moist enough, and add additional water if required to keep
the moisture level in each cup roughly the same. Set the cups aside in a sunny location,
but keep them covered to prevent damage. Place the cups in a random order, and make
sure they are all properly labeled. Plant three seeds in each cup after the cups have
existed for five days, planting them deep enough to covered by soil. During the first
germination, notice the cups each day, take photos on a daily basis, and check the soil’s
moisture regularly. Five days following the first germination, if a number of seedlings have
appeared in a cup, trim to one plant per cup. The height of the plant should be measured
from the base to top of the plant, or from the root to the tip of the longest leaf, depending
on which is longer, within ten days following the initial germination.

CONCLUSION
It is essential to comprehend soil acidity and adjusting soil pH in order to produce
healthy plants, maximize nutrient availability, and avoid imbalances that affect growth. The
possibility of achieving effective plant development and productivity will increase if you
know about soil pH and use the proper practices, even if you are a farmer, gardener, or
horticulture enthusiast.
