Self-Learning Module 7
Substances and Mixtures
Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Science 7 Self-Learning Module on Substances and Mixtures!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the Science 7 Self-Learning Module on Substances and Mixtures!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active
learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

Expectations - This points to the set of knowledge and skills

that you will learn after completing the module.

Pretest - This measures your prior knowledge about the lesson

at hand.

Recap - This part of the module provides a review of concepts

and skills that you already know about a previous lesson.

Lesson - This section discusses the topic in the module.

Activities - This is a set of activities that you need to perform.

Wrap-Up - This section summarizes the concepts and

application of the lesson.

Valuing - This part integrates a desirable moral value in the

lesson.

Posttest - This measures how much you have learned from the
entire module.
EXPECTATIONS

At the end of the learning episode, you are expected to:

1. define mixtures and substances operationally;

2. describe mixtures and substances based on their composition and properties; and
3. appreciate the importance of mixtures and substances.

PRETEST

Encircle the letter of the correct answer.

1. Which of the following is a substance?

a. milk
b. oxygen
c. sugar and water
d. toothpaste
2. Mixtures are combination of two or more substances. Which of the following is a
mixture?
a. salt
b. sugar
c. salt and water
d. water
3. What kind of mixture is coffee in water?
a. solid in a gas
b. gas in a liquid
c. liquid in a solid
d. solid in a liquid
4. You combine oil and water. How many phases have you observed?
a. one
b. two
c. three
d. four
5. Mixtures can be separated by physical methods while pure substances cannot be
separated physically. Which of the following groups contain only pure substances?
a. air, methanol, sodium chloride
b. iron, methanol, calcium fluoride
c. ammonia, vinegar, smog
d. oxygen, calcium, water
RECAP

In the previous lesson, you had learned the difference between element and
compound. Are you familiar with Four Pics Ones Word? Identify the name of the
elements or compounds in the following:
LESSON

How wonderful is it to see God’s creation. The land where plants, trees and man
live; the nonliving things like land, rocks, volcanoes, seas and mountains; the
water from the river, seas and oceans and the air that envelopes the earth. These e
make up our only HOME; the EARTH. All the things that you can see around are
called MATTER.

Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass. Since there are plenty of
materials around us, matter is classified into substances and mixtures. Look at
the diagram below:

Pure substance contains only one kind of matter. This can either be an element or
a compound. In the previous lessons, you have learned that elements are the
simplest form of matter. Some of the examples of elements are:

Sulfur powder Magnesium metal Copper Wire

Compounds on the other hand consists of two or more elements. Let us look at the
given examples.

Fig 1: Water Fig 2: Baking Powder Fig 3: Table Salt

Water, baking powder and table salt are examples of compounds, but what about
mixtures.
Mixtures on the other hand consist of two or more substances that are combined
physically. They can be separated by physical means like evaporation, floatation,
scooping, decantation, filtration and by using a magnet.

Fig 1. Salt and Water Fig 2: Oil and Water

Figure 1 is a mixture of salt and water. Notice that the salt cannot be seen because
it has been dissolved in water; thus, the solid salt is distributed throughout the liquid
water. Since there is only a liquid phase; then the mixture is said to be homogeneous.

However, in the mixture of oil and water, there are two liquids. The two liquids can
still be seen. Since the components are not distributed through the sample, then the
mixture is heterogeneous.

There are variety of mixtures at home and in our environment. Some of the examples
of mixtures are the following:
Body/
Food/ Medicine/
Personal School Industry Environment
Beverage Health
Hygiene
jam shampoo decoction ink paint air
jelly detergents syrup paste cement sea Water
drinks soap dextrose glue brass garbage
rubbing dental
cheese chalk ore sewage water
alcohol amalgam
tincture of liquid hand decaying
butter crayons alloys
iodine wash matter
leche
cologne liniment paper solvent smog
flan
halo-
lotion aromatic oil floor wax grease smoke
halo
soft vegetable
perfume vaccine oil pastel pollutants
drinks oil
herbal
juice toothpaste staple wire glass soil
medicine

VALUING

Science plays an important role in technology. Several products are now at

hand and available making man’s life convenient and successful. Substances and
mixtures are important in our life. The study of substances and mixtures enable man
to find solutions to health, medicine, industry, food manufacturing, textile,
transportation, communication, environment and other areas in our life. This Covid-
19 pandemic is a challenge to the scientist. Indeed, substances and mixtures are
needed in creating this vaccine.
