What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

My student learning goal for this lesson idea would be that students grasp the importance in
America’s involvement in World War 1 effectively. Students will be expected to use
technology to create a PowerPoint explaining important information that they researched about
one of the topics of World War 1, Jazz Age, Harlem Renaissance, baseball, automobile, and
transatlantic. Students can work in groups to better their knowledge of the topic.

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ (X) Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ (X) Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their
learning and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached
by displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

Students will work in groups and each group will choose one of the six categories. First, I will
show students the PowerPoint video I created and allow them to watch it and take notes on
each topic. I will then express my expectations to the class. Students will then pick the topic
they want to research and plan out how they are going to research their project and how they
want to go about completing the activity. Students will be able to use information that I have
used but will be expected to research their own facts. I will give them specific websites to use.
They will take the information they have gathered and put it into a PowerPoint. I expect
students to use their imagination and think outside of the box. I will express this to students
and tell them that I want pictures and even videos. Students will then be expected to turn their
presentation in online for me to give them feedback. I will simply grade the assignment and
give feedback on what they need to fix. Students will then revise their projects and finally,
share their presentations to the class. The class will be given a sheet where they will write
down stuff they learn from each group’s presentation. As the students work on this, I will walk
around and help, guiding students to the best resources and explaining to them what they may
want to include. I will conclude this lesson by talking amongst the class and asking questions
to see what my students learned. Students will be expected to answer all the questions
correctly.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:

I plan to use this technology in the classroom to allow students to do what interests them. By
doing this, it will affect student learning. I will manage the technology by giving my students
specific websites to use to make sure they are not getting off tasks with games or other
distractions. Students will be expected to plan out their topics and descriptions in a worksheet

before researching it using technology. This knowledge will help students know exactly what
they are looking for and stay on task while doing it. I believe doing this will likely keep
students on task and engaged, so they do not feel like they are at loss of ideas while
completing the project. I will manage behaviors through this by walking around and seeing
what ideas students have had and progress they are making.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This lesson idea supports the principle for Universal Design for Learning (UDL) by including
representation, action and expression, and engagement. This lesson plan supports
representation by giving students different ways to learn the material. Students can choose
their topic and research by what they find interesting about the topic. Students also get to work
with other peers and see all the different thoughts on the subjects. In the end, all the students
will get to see different definitions of the topics through the presentations. This lesson
represents action and expression by allowing them to show what they have learned in different
ways. Students are given the opportunity to insert videos, pictures, and data that is intriguing
to them. This lesson supports engagement allowing the teacher to see the different perspectives
of the students and what works best for their learning. In this lesson, I can give students many
ways of motivation. They have the will to do it the way that makes sense to them.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

The lesson idea will impact student learning by giving them a choice. Students can do the
activity the way that works best for them. Students are given high expectations and are
expected to use their creativity to produce a project to advance their learning. This layout will
be very beneficial for student learning. I look forward to using this in my classroom and seeing
all the different ways students make these. It will allow me to see all the different learning
ideas that help students learn.
