Q\¡rat sometimes make use of the empty nest of another species,

blackbircls were reared in one season in one nest on the

Hampshire cattage: whether rhis m,as dane by otrc and the sarue

bird or by two different birds I cannot be rcrtoin; I assumctl it to

be tlone by one bird. Afier the seconti brood oJ'blackbirds hnd

known a spotted flycatcher put a new tining

ffrnu 6. Another glorious lune day. Drove with alarge
party to Yarningale Common. There were great numbers

of birds, chiefly Linnets and Warblers, llitting about

the furze, I also noticed a pair of Win-chats and some

Tit-larks. We discovered eight bird's nests in the patches

of gorse qnd bramble-a Yellaw Hamn'ter's, two Linnet's,

a Wite-throat's, a Willow Warbler's, a Greenfinch's

and two Thnsh's. Most of the nests had young ones in,

but the Yellow Hammer's contained four eggs.

EDIrH HoTDEN

Qo, *ony of us stay walled up because we are afraid

of beinghurt. We are afraid to care too much for fear

that the other person does not care at all.
