Summary of Immersion Experiences

Work immersion is a key feature of the Senior High School curriculum and

refers to the 80 hours of hands-on experience or work simulation that Grade 12

students will go through to expose them to the actual work setting and to enrich

the competencies provided by the school. Work immersion is a key subject in the

SHS curriculum that is delivered in a variety of formats and time frames to meet

the needs of SHS students. The subject gives students the opportunity to

become acquainted with the workplace, to simulate employment, and to apply

their competencies in areas of specialization/applied subjects in authentic work

environments.

During my work immersion at Buenavista Water District, I was fortunate to

have firsthand experience and learn many different aspects of what goes into a

project, the general process of how a project is initially planned, progressed, and

completed, as well as how much work and detail goes into each stage. Another

important lesson I learned during these 80 hours of work immersion was the

many different types of work that an employer has to perform, which has given

me a deeper understanding into the different types of roles and responsibilities

that I could perform as an Engineer. Looking back on my first day at Buenavista

Water District, it was one of the most memorable days of my career. After being

introduced to everyone, I was given a tender to work on in which they asked for

advice to improve certain aspects of the project wherever I saw fit, as well as my

overall thoughts on the project. They were very open and happy for me to make

a contribution as much as I wanted, and they were open to any proposals or

concepts. This immediately put me at ease and made me feel like I was a part of

the organization. I was overwhelmed by the work and responsibilities that had

been assigned to me, but with the assistance of my supervisors and the board of

directors, all of whom have years of experience in the company, I felt more

confident and supported because I knew my work would be double checked and

any uncertainties explained. I was able to pick up tips and learn different types of

skills by observing and learning from them, ranging from learning to

communicate and deal with other stations in the company to comprehending and

decipher many different types of plans. It was enjoyable for me because it

required me to apply all of the techniques I learned at the Buenavista Water

District in every station of Engineering that had been taught to us, namely,

operating pump stations, consulting all pressure gages, reading water meters,

surveying and cleaning each pump station. I was happy to have the opportunity

to apply all of my knowledge to real-life situations.

As a student working at Buenavista Water District, I learned a lot of things that

I will undoubtedly bring and use someday. One of those things is that, despite the

numerous tasks at hand, you must continue and complete them because it is

your responsibility to do so. I also learned how to interact with others, especially

customers. Another thing I've discovered is to be a quick worker because some

tasks have a time limit and must be completed within a certain amount of time.
