OFE Construction will setup storage containers to store their material and put all required
equipments on site. First day on site, the contractor will require drawing of the site from the
Engineer and confirm the quantities. Pre-construction activities need to be carried out by the
Installation Contractor prior to the start of the main pavement installation. These activities include
finalising the pavement route, detailed design finalisation, mobilisation, notification of entry to
landowners, setting-up of pavement arear, establishing temporary works requirements, setting-up
, design of land drainage in agricultural areas and reinstatement works, construction of temporary
access roads and pre-environmental mitigation works, and agreeing with landowners any special
requirements prior to entry onto their properties.

• Employees must wear the appropriate PPE at all times (A minimum of hard hat, hi-vis
vest/jacket and protective boots).
• The site is already hoarded off; secure any areas with barricades if needed.
• Conspicuous safety sign will be mounted with site rules, petroleum precautions and
details of protective equipment needed. Deep excavation signs should be displayed
where appropriate around the dig area.
• The area of the excavation is to be cordoned off and clearly marked; no personnel are
to work within close proximity of the pit.

FIRST AID AND EMERGENCY

• A first aid, fire point and emergency muster point will be arranged, with staff being
aware of existing equipment and procedures.

OFE Construction uses a Site Establishment Checklist Before Starting Construction

It’s there to help you prepare the construction site.

Site Establishment Checklist

Site establishment includes things like:

• Protection to floors and existing surfaces.
• Safety signs and first aid equipment.
• Electricity connection
• Water disconnection
• Designated areas for material deliveries and rubbish etc.

Site Establishment Checklist

1) NEIGHBOUR NOTIFICATION LETTERS

Inform your neighbors of intended start date and site contact numbers.
Do this at least 2 weeks prior to starting on site.
2) FIRST AID EQUIPMENT

To be stored on site in a prominent location.

Include for any site inductions with new contractors on site.

3) SITE AMENITIES

Including toilets, running water, site sheds, tool lock ups, lunchrooms, etc.

4) PERMITS

May need to be obtained from local authorities for project specific items i.e. skip bins, work zones or
traffic control items.

5) TRAFFIC CONTROL

Needs to be considered for organizing deliveries and managing pedestrians.

6) PLUMBING AND ELECTRICAL SERVICES

Need to be disconnected to work zones prior to construction.

Temporary utilities may need to be installed for the duration of the build.

7) SIGNAGE

Builders contact details.

Private certifiers (if you have one) contact details.
Relevant warning signs.
Location of site office signs or any safety and induction signs to be erected on the site fence or in a
prominent location.

8) DIAL BEFORE YOU DIG SERVICES

Is required before arriving on site.

This ensures that any authorities services or mains will not be damaged during construction.
9) INSURANCES

To cover the type of work being undertaken during construction.

Homeowners household insurances may need to be varied or amended during the course of the
building works.
Includes insurances like:

• Public liability.
• Workers compensation.
• Construction all risk.
• Homeowners warranty.

Activity 1.
The survey crew are the first personnel from the construction contractor’s workforce to
enter the site to commence the main construction activities. The setting out of the works should
be scheduled to commence at least 2 days prior to the remainder of the construction activity
group 1 activities. This work will be carried out with small four man crews using surveying
instruments. Setting-out pegs will be placed at all boundaries, changes in direction
and intermediate sightings on the proposed centre line and the extremities of the working
easement. Part of the setting-out crew’s duties is to identify any existing services that cross or are in
close proximity to the pavement and supervise the trial hole crew. The trial hole crew will hand
excavate to expose, identify and determine the exact location of all existing services. This data will
be recorded and transferred to the engineers for incorporation into the final pavement design.

Activity 2 – Prepare the existing surface(Gravel)

Step 1
Examine the area that is to be torn up. Put up construction works signs to inform the local
authorities. The size of the area will determine what tools are needed to do the job. Remove any
vegetation on the surface.

Step 2

Level the area according to slope. Spray Herbicide and pesticide

Step 3
Apply riversand as bedding in preparation of Paving blocks.

.
Activity 3 – Installation of New Block Paving.

Where the paving is to be laid on an existing subgrade that is too low, the subgrade and subbase
shall be constructed in accordance with the requirements of SANS 1200 DM and SANS 1200 ME,
respectively, and shall conform to the tolerance requirements.

We will check the levels of the earthworks conform to the specifications and drawings and where
necessary gets the contractor to take remedial action. Depressions shall be filled with material that
has the physical properties specified for subbase material in SANS 1200 ME, and the material shall
be compacted to 98% of modified AASHTO maximum density

The top of the subbase shall be so constructed that surface water cannot pond and shall have a
longitudinal fall of at least 1% and a transverse fall of at least 2%.

Activity 4 - EDGE RESTRAINTS

Edge restraints consisting of channels will be constructed before any units are laid. The function of
the edge restraint is to retain the sand bedding and to ensure that units at the edge of the pavement
do not creep outwards or rotate under load with consequent opening of joints and loss of interlock.

Activity 5 - PLACING AND COMPACTING OF BEDDING (Riversand)

Bedding sand shall be spread over the subbase and evenly screeded in the loose condition so as to
achieve a compacted thickness of 25 ± 10mm. When the sand is spread, its moisture content shall be
6 ± 2%. The sand bed shall be laid slightly in advance of the placement of the units but only to the
extent that the particular area of pavement can be completed on the same day.

Levels should be checked at regular intervals as laying proceeds. If levels change due to variation in
the sand type or its moisture content, then the surcharge will change and blocks may have to be
lifted and the sand raked and rescreeded to new levels before the blocks are relaid.

Activity 6 - LAYING OF UNITS

The principal lines of the paving unit pattern as laid shall be as specified in the project specification
or given on the drawings, and as agreed with the engineer which is herringbone pattern. Joint widths
shall be between 2 mm and 6 mm. Whole units shall be laid first. Full depth closure units of special
size or cut or part units split from whole units, shall be fitted into gaps around the perimeter and
around service installations such as manholes. Where plant has to be moved over an uncompacted
newly laid pavement, boards shall be laid to prevent disturbance of the units.

Activity 7 – Compaction

Plate compactor will be used to level the whole unit. The manner of compaction of units shall be
such that damage to the units is prevented. At least two compaction passes shall be made over the
paving as soon as practicable after laying, and before the introduction of any jointing sand. By the
end of each day, compaction shall be completed to not closer than 1 m from any free edge. A
uniform even surface shall be obtained over the paved area.
Activity 6 – Joint Filling

The joints shall not be filled until all closure units have been inserted, all the necessary adjustments
to line and level have been made and the pavement has been subjected to at least two passes of the
compactor. Sand that complies with 3.3 (b) shall be broomed into the joints until they are full, and
sufficient passes of a plate compactor shall be made to settle the joint filling. The procedure shall be
repeated until the joints remain full after compaction. On completion of compaction, all excess sand
shall be broomed off and disposed of. Damage caused during compaction shall be made good by the
contractor at his own expense. COMMENTARY Both the sand and the paving units should be as dry
as possible when sand is spread. Due to the narrowness of the joints, damp sand may bridge across
them and resist compaction without this being obvious at the surface. Fully filled joints are essential
for the achievement of the full structural performance of the pavement throughout the service life
of the pavement. If construction work is still in progress, excess jointing sand can be left in place
after completion and swept off at a later stage. The sand should be brushed and not washed into the
joints.

KERBS
WORKS:

• Site operatives will be made aware of heavy plant movement.

• Reduce levels for the kerb line in accordance with site layout drawing and set a
string line.
• All kerbs are to be delivered along or near the installation line (as possible), to
eliminate any manual handling.
• Ensure that there is an area of hard standing for concrete mixer to manoeuvre
around the site safely.
• Move mixer into its positions with the use of safety man to direct around the site
and make personnel aware of its trajectory.
• Pour lean mix and create level bed for kerbs, wearing the appropriate gloves for
protection. Site manager will advise as to correct protection to use.
• A grab attached to a machine is to be used to manoeuvre the kerbs into position.
• Use the grab to raise the kerb.
• Manoeuvre the kerb into position and lower into place with the grab.
• Use a rubber mallet to level the kerbs along the string line.
• Repeat procedure for all kerbs.
• Fix kerbs into position with the concrete lean mix.
• Demobilise leaving a clean and tidy site.
Site De-establishment

On completion of the project, the site will be cleaned, site will be handed back to the
client and the following will be removed from site:

• Plant
• Storage offices
• Excess material
• Jojo Tank(Water supply)
• Electricity disconnection
