KB KB!! “There's always a story behind every success. It’s that of ‘breaking barriers’. The greatest barrier we need to break is that within us. Fears only limit success”, Itall began on Saturday, 11TH of January, 2020. Another KB KLUB executive year that will keep the flag flying right after the grand celebration of the SOthanniversary fromthe previous tenure. The idea was simple. To maintain the status quo by being the foremost medical student's organization in the business of philanthropy, academic excellence and social empowerment while grooming disciplined individuals with powerfulminds, greatheartsandready hands. However, we've been able to achieve all these, as I'll highlight in subsequent paragraphs, it’s ust as important to highlight the challenges encountered during this 749 daysjourney. Commissioningofthe KB Multipurpose Court The events of the executive year began with the commissioning of the KB Multipurpose Court, a newly renovated sports facility serving the entire student populace of the College. Itstarted as an idea to fix the old and substandard court and was commissioned on Monday, 13th of January by Grand Patron/Life KBite Prof. Oladapo Ashiru with other Life KBites and College management in attendance. This was done as part of the philanthropic activities of the 50th anniversarycelebration. Following this event, we organized a novelty volleyball match later that day that witnessed the excitement of students who watched eagerly fromthe stands andhostels. ‘The KBKUP: King of theCourt Weedidn’t stopat that. The KB KLUB deemedit fit to be the first organization to organize a proper competition using the court. With the permission of the College, we kicked it off on Saturday, 18th January, 2020 to feature Five-a- side football, basketball and volleyball games. Students enjoyed the KB KUP because it wasn’t just about the sports ac it also featured amazing side attractions like food, drinks, shopping items from vendors and amazing music performances from student artistes in the College. It remains a memorable all round event that lasted for 3weekends. TheCOVID Hiatus Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic marked the temporary cessation of the regular academic and social activities within the College and world alike. This did not leave the KB KLUB out and it was a tough challenge, asit took a lot of time and relative inactivity to adjusttothe newnormal. Inorder not to give an exacttimeline of events, ll go ahead to summarise everything we've been able toachievewith the various committees. MediPhi 2021 EDITION AN ANNUAL PUBLICATION OF THE KB KLUB Committee on Philanthropic Activities (COPA) Events organized include: 1. The KB Royale 2021 was undoubtedly the biggest and most memorable ever experienced so far. We all witnessed the induction of 5 new KBites at the dinner andother fun-filled activities were experienced withour guests-KB Jewels and offered by our host, Whispering Palms Resort, Badagry and its side attraction. Dr Ajayiis wasraised in Lagos, He graduated from the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Nigeria in 1999. He is a diligent personality who enjoys his free time and gives his full potential when it's time to work. He is an excellent Philanthropist. Dr Ajayi is happily married with 3 kids. gi MediPhil 2021 EDITION [AN ANNUAL PUBLICATION OF THE KB KLUB 1, What made you choose Reproductive Medicine? Well, it's funny. During your clinical rotations in medical school, you will know the specialties you enjoy, theones thatare easier for youthan others. For me, | found Obstetrics and Gynaecology very easy and logical, there is always an endpoint. For example, if asked about the management of a condition, you could manage medically or surgically. It is straightforward unlike Internal medicine where you could have more than 50 differentials for a patient's headache and you wouldn't still arrive at a diagnosis. By the time | was done with my Senior posting in medical school, Ihad already solidified the choice. knew what I wanted and wentforit. Ididn'teven wait for my NYSC program to be concluded before | wrote primaries for Obs & Gyn residency which | passed. | wasn't going to leave Obs & Gyn for anyreason. 2. Tell us the joy you feel when you make new patients who had formerly lost hope smile? Fulfiling.... | have had patients who started off with avery bad fibroid who later went on to have 3 or 4 kids. We removed the fibroid, treated the cause of infertility and they became pregnant. Sometimes it doesn’t even have to be an IVF (In Vitro Fertilization). Just simple things like a rightly-timed intercourse, taking the prescribed medication can make the change. And you will be surprised. These are the patients who have followed me till date and through them, we have been able tomeet other people because once you help a family, you are likely to help everyone around them as we kept getting more referrals. | used to work in Surulere before I came to Leki, the crowd got bigger when we got here as we keep on getting more referral. | wouldn't claim credit for everything. The truth is if you know your stuff well, most of your patients don't really have complex issues. It could be a couple that don't have frequent intercourse, situations where the husband works in Abuja and the wife stays in Lagos but the husband keeps missing his wife's ovulation period due to the distance and absence. ‘Sometimes, just educating the patients on simple things, sitting down and listening to them so you deduce from their story what could give away their problem. | always say only a bad gynaecologist willoffer everyone IVF. 3. Looking back at how far you've come, how would you describe your journey? Ithas been rough, can't sugarcoat that. Where do | start rom? I didn't write my part one exams until after Four and a half year, an exam | should have written after 3 years and the reason was because accreditation for Surgery was withdrawn from LUTH for 18 months and we couldn't write the exam tll the accreditation was restored. Asif that wasn't enough torture, we didn't receive any salary for 6 months and we even got aletter from the management to leave the residency programme if we didn't pass. | passed anyways. Then when | became a senior registrar, the workload went overboard as there were a few of us then, Asa senior registrar, you are assumed to be able to handle all the challenges you face. Imagine at night when someone comes into the Emergency Room with a complex issue that you are not sure about what to do, say a uterine rupture when you haven't done hysterectomy before. | was abit lucky, sometimes when there is aproblem, |could reach out toone of my mentors, Professor Ajayiwho stays in the compound then. | should add this too. | wasn't trained to ‘kiss ass’ and that posed some challenges for me compared to my colleagues who were good at doing such. For people like that, there is a way things are glossed over for them even when they run into trouble. Imagine when you get heavily criticized forsomethingthatisnoteveninyourcontrol. I remember when a patient came to the Emergency Room really bad on a day when | was ‘on call and we had to rush to the theater. We got to the lift and it wasn't working but we found a way to move the patient, sadly the patient diedon getting to the redline in the theater. During mortality review, | was heavily criticized and the H.O.Dsaid" and taken you should have put the patient on your shoulder and take the patients up thestairs’. MediPhil 2021 EDITION [AN ANNUAL PUBLICATION OF THE KB KLUB What about the exams too? They are freaking difficult. Asides that, you can be failed because your examiner doesn't like the shape of your beardsor eventhecolor of your tie. And that was the training, there were trial and errors too, My first IVF unit was in Surulere when | partnered with someone to set up an IVF lab in an existing hospital. This is 6 years after and | can tell you | haven't received a dime, we haven't held any board meeting of which | own about 20% of the shares. In all | would say you shouldn't expect anything you want to get to you on a platter of gold. 4, What are the couple of highlights on this journey? | would say my international tours to gain more experience and when | got a job at Lagoon Hospital already waiting for me even before | finished my training. | did locum in Lagoon during my trainingand my patients liked me, so they held ‘ontothe post tll finished, During residency, we learnt some advanced skills but they were mostly theory as the equipment are not available or barely functional. So, | had to travel to Germany, Dubaito learn using simulator so that I can have some hands-on experience since the theoretical knowledge is there. These are courses that last for barely a month and you spend close to 5 million. The most important is, patient satisfaction, you see all these years of training and development boost patient's satisfaction, especially when your patients know your standard of practice is what they obtain anywhere else they goin the world. 5. What is your philosophy of Life? | already gave a hint on that. For me, | believe Nothing good comes easy, younust work hard for it, so | don't even expect myself to win a lottery. | believeit's what you work for that lasts. I don't cut corners because if | do, | will get into troubles. Even with my patients, | dot my I's and cross my T's so that my patients don't come down with complications. My Prof will say“Watch your back, assume all patients will put you in trouble, in that way when you see blood ooze from an artery, make sure it stops before you close and don't assume itwillcloseitself” also believe what is worth doing at all is worth doing well, so whatever I learn or do, I give it my best and not just use idea like a road side mechanic. Whenever I do something, | ask why too. 6. Who are your mentors and what unique characters do they have that young people should look for when choosing mentors? They are a lot. Prof. Ashiru, prof. Osibogun, Dr. Kunle Hassan, Dr. Akinluyi are some of them. Your mentors should be people you can point to and say they are honest and started from the bottom, no shady business and you could see the hard-work up to the present moment. Money is what money is but I still admire the ones who live adecent life and are content. When you see Prof. Ashiru's CV, you will know he has put in the work andhasdistinguished himself. Ihaveafewmentors outside the medical field too, someone | admire alot is the vice-president, Prof. yemi Osinbajo. He rose through the ranks too. If you can mention anybody who did the ‘Rags to Riches’ kind of thing and did it legitimately, | admire them already. My Parents weren't buoyant so | understand the work it takes and | respect them. MediPhil 2021 EDITION [AN ANNUAL PUBLICATION OF THE KB KLUB 7. You are a mentor to most of us, what advice do you have for budding medical students who want to choose this career path? Be inquisitive, get rounded and acquire knowledge not just medicine alone, be thorough and be honest. I can't stress this enough, don't be caught cheating. Whatever you choose to do, aim tounderstandit very well, havea deep knowledge base and | can tell you the sky is just the starting point. | remember when | was in medical school, | was on shell scholarship and whenever the money comes in, the first thing I do with the moneyis to buy textbooks then | finda nice sound system or TV for chilling too. Even though I said you should be thorough, you should be smart about it too. Don't go about reading what you don'tneed, bediscerning, \" One last advice that I have for you especially when it comes to exams is to be humble, dress decently and not too flashy so that someone doesn't just automatically hate you and subject you to more questioning because they think doctors shouldn't dress like celebrity. You also need tobe diplomatic. remember failinganexam because | told the examiner the test he mentioned is now obsolete and there are newer alternatives. 8. Is there a line where Medicine meets Entrepreneurship? Definitely, in the past people say’ A Doctors reward is in Heaven’ In fact, | remember during my induction, the person who gave the speech said we should never expect to be millionaires but we would be comfortable. People cajole you with the Hippocratic oaths meanwhile your kids are suffering, you can't even send them to the best schools. I think entrepreneurship needs to be incorporated into our medical school curriculum and that is what differentiate them abroad. Look. at the owners of Moderna who are also doctors, they've made the FORBES 500 now. Medicine has gone beyond being a good samaritan all the time. As youare helping people, youneed tohelp yourself and people around you. Asides that when you have entrepreneurship knowledge as a doctor, you can deliver service that is top-notch with air of professionalism. You can provide quality care in a cost-effective manner while still being profitable. Aside the health providers, let's lookat the patient side, using Nigeriafor example, you will know it is the private sector that is championing innovation in health sector. Lagos seems to be the hub now, innovations in Cardiology, Interventional Radiology, Gynaecology, Oncology and surgery are all happening in the private sector and these institutions are worldclasscenter. MediPhi 2021 EDITION [AN ANNUAL PUBLICATION OF THE KB KLUB 9. Asa talented Doctor, dynamic business man and a philanthropist, how do you manage all that with family? Trying to balance work and life is not easy, especially when you're still growing and haven't really assembled your team. | have three kids, a son and two daughters. | am friends with my kids because I'm the cool parent. We play games together when I'm around and they make it easy tounwind. My sonisin the University already, the eldest daughter is in SS3 and wants to be a psychologist and the youngest daughter is really the one after my heart. She doesa lot of things like me and wants to be a doctor too. She said she wants to study at Harvard and what I told her is “get a scholarship first because | still want to buy myG-wagon’. And my madam, she is no push-over. She is a doctor too and when she wants your attention, she must get it or else she protests. We've been married for 19 years and we are very good friends. We dated in medical school and got married after youth service. Most of the things | do, we do it together, we run Clearview hospital together and sheistheco-director. 10. Outside of work, what do you do for leisure to release the stress? Whenever I'm not working, | unwind in an extreme manner, | let go,! just want to forget work. I club sometimes, go swimming. | ike dancing and hangingoutwith my friendstoo. 14. How well has your membership as a Kbite made you distinct from your peers? Idon't ever regret joining, being amember means youare discerning, not just about work alone. The part | love most about the Klub is the philanthropy aspect, not just money alone, spending time with the less privileged. We organize parties for these organizations, sit with them for hours and we still give them gifts when, leaving and that is pure philanthropy because it ‘comes from the heart. Imagine a small group causing a wave felt all over the world and everyone is doing well. | can't fathom my stay in medical school without the KB Klub. | probably wouldn't be a gyneacologist in the first place. There is this story I tell, one that stays with me forever. After passing my primaries in © & G and Iwas been tossed around. Iwenttto Life Kbite Dr Kunle Hassan's office in GRA Ikeja (I doubt if he will still remember). | introduced myself and told him my predicament, all he did was gave me his card and wrote something at the back for me to give the then CMD and that was it. The CMD followed the case himself and discovered the foul play. Guess what, | started my residency training the following Monday. This is how | will describe philanthropy. It is investing in mankind to build a society we are happy to call ours. A wonderful feeling combining compassion, time and talent for the benefit of the World. "The best philanthropy is constantly in search of the finalities- a search for a cause, an attempt to cureevilsattheir source.” - John Rockefeller Over the years, the KB KLUB has shown dedication to her core ethos of philanthropy, utilizing a disruptive mindset and innovative thinking in order to discover ways to serve the community and committing to action. This year, following the COVID-19 pandemic, the KB KLUB remains relentless in putting asmileon the face of the common man. Amid the period of the resident doctors’ strike, a General Medical & Dental Outreach themed “Ilera Loro” was chosen, born out of the idea of reaching out to as many lives as possible. The event took place at the heart of Ojuwoye Market in Odi-Olowo Ojuwoye LCDA, Mushin, Lagos State, Nigeria on the 13th of October, 2021. Ameetingwiththe Baale, Chief Folorunso Bakare and other community stakeholders secured their full support and publicity prior to the event. A display of tents, tables and chairs with the banner of the event flying proudly attracted an expectant audience. The event took off at 11:05am as Kbites were sharp as usual to assume their respectiveduties with utmost efficiency. The flow of the event saw the audience steady progressing from registration, anthropometry, blood pressure and blood sugar check, dental examination, medical and dental consultation by our team of volunteer doctors and dentists, and appropriate dispensation of drugs at our Med station with referrals ifneeded. Attendees were also administered a short questionnaire regarding Health Insurance and the COVID-19 vaccine. MediPhi 2021 EDITION [AN ANNUAL PUBLICATION OF THE KB KLUB Kbite Shaniyi engaged the community with an interactive session regarding the COVID-19 pandemic talking about the risks, prevention and clearing all misconceptions about the vaccine. The audience and Kbites were entertained by the appearance of a community stunt man performing daring feats defying logic to general delight. The Baale graced us with his presence and a face full of smiles as he witnessed a lively event with Kbites happy and active. total of 130 attendees were impacted, with the event ending at3:20pm. During the course of the program, | would pause and observe the flow of the event. | noticed something, everyone who came to be attended to, wore a smile on their face. “Why are you so happy?" | couldn't understand but | knew of one thing for sure, that sight made me smile. What seemed like a task, became a fun event. | realized I'm the one gaining here for | was given happiness. where I never thought I would find it. You know, before you begin to dive into the unknown, you must learn the ‘known’. Looking at my clay works, they are in realism form, this is the ‘known’ and you must learn the’known' before you can go into the ‘unknown’. My art style is still being developed. PCO: That's great. We will now focus on the sculpture piece, “AGBADA’, the artwork that drew the attention of the internet. What inspired youtocreatethe piece? Adesokan: Initially, | intended to carve a stylized figure which | had presented as a sketch to my project supervisor. She later called me and said, “Timmy, why can't you do something unique? These stylized figures are commonly seen by people." That was howwe came up with AGBADA, ~theuniqueness of the Yoruba culture. PO: It was an amazing piece. What does the ‘Agbada personally represent for you, in relation toYorubaculture? Adesokan: Thank you. The carving of the Agbada represents the culture we are losing. We as Africans no longer value the history of our forefathers and because we embraced the colonization of the British, we disowned the components of our culture and termed them as ‘fetish. My artwork is a call for the revival of our lostculture. PO: Interesting. Can you enlighten us on how your piece was made? How long did it take you to createtthework? Adesokan: Sure. | first started with a sketch, which was approved by the lecturer and then | created a marquette, a smaller sample of the work in order to guide my creation. | purchased six logs of wood and assembled them together using the process Dowel joint and then sealed it with an adhesive called ‘araldite. | then processed incarving, The motifs were stone dyed tocreatea distinction from the wood itself. P.O: What is your advice for intending artists lookingtouncover their creativity? Adesokan: My advice is for them to enjoy the process of art. They need to take it as a hobby. There are artists who are into art just for money and they are miserable because they don't enjoy it. Think of it as a hobby, that’s what unleashes creativity. P.O: Alright. Cake Ae MediPhil Fellow Life KBites, Your Excellencies, Royal Fathers Present, Distinguished Guests, ladies and gentlemen, it is quite an honor, and it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all, on behalf of the Planning Committee and KB Klub Executive Committee, to the KB Klub 50th Anniversary celebrations. October 2018 seems like only 10 short months ago when the conversation was started by Life KBites about having a befitting anniversary celebration for KB Klub and now the moment is upon us. Fifty years is a unique milestone in the life of anyone, most certainly a milestone in the life of a unique club of extraordinary gentlemenlike KB Klub. For 50 years, KB Klub has made a difference in the area of academic empowerment and improved social standards in the College of Medicine University of Lagos, but more importantly, the club has continued to make a difference in the area of philanthropy by continuing to touch the lives of the less privileged in our community. In 1969, a group of medical students of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos came together and founded the KB KLUB onatripod of Philanthropy, Academic Excellence and Social Empowerment. Early philanthropic events of the Klub included taking children from orphanage homes on picnics, celebrating Valentine's Day with the disabled, donating food and clothing materials to the less privileged, etc. These activities quickly became part of the norms and traditions of the KB KLUB, and yearly, we have charity visits to institutions such as Wesley Schools 1&2, Pachelli School for the blind, Modupe Cole Memorial School for the mentally impaired, lle-Anu & Atunda-Olu Schools, Heart of Gold Hospital, Cheshire Home, Bethesda Home for the blind, just tomentiona few. As the years passed, we became more innovative with our philanthropic activities as we began to organize more projects such as Medical Outreaches, Health Awareness Programs, Blood Drives, Donation of facilities to CMUL, etc. All through the year, we make it a priority to put a smile on the faces of various people. After the last editionof the Medi-Philin 2018, we hosted a myriad of events which also included the glorius Golden jubilee week events. However, we were faced with challenges just like the rest of the world and we couldn't keep up with our readers. Despite the challenges, we were ready to pick up the baton and determined to overcome. This edition of the MediPhil is unique. Though it is a 2021 edition, a special portion of the magazine is reserved for events that happened during the Golden Jubilee anniversaryin 2019. VITA NOVA are Latin words which translate to New- Life in English. This compound word connotes and brilliantly captures the ever-green KB KLUB that has been touching lives in a magnificent way since its inception. This culture is now being maintained and refined by the newer generation of kbites who have kept the ball rolling. ‘The KB KLUB, a klub with STYLE and PANACHE, an association to be reckoned with started in 1969 by group of male medical students headed by Professor Oladapo Ashiru, OFR. With the damaging effects of the pandemic, we were still able to pull off a successful academic day in 2020 and 2021. In 2020, we organized a #STACK Webinar themed Navigating a Career in Non-Clinical Healthcare. This webinar held on Wednesday, the 10th of June 2020 at 6pm on the zoom platform. In total, we had over 100 people that registered for the event. The guest speaker was Dr Lola Odedere, a seasoned expert in healthcare financing and management and at the time, the team lead of operations at AXA Mansard, The event was moderated by the KB Viceroy, Kbite Akinwande. Our guest spoke on the increasing need for medical graduates to be more open minded about the field of non- clinical healthcare. She spoke on the various career paths that await medical graduates who were not interested in clinical practice. There was a Question and Answer session afterwards and the event ended on a good note. In 2021, the world began to move on from the pandemic step by step as the nationwide lockdown was being lifted in bits. Even with this, physical activities of the Klub could not begin in the entire magnitude of itself. The financial implications of the pandemic on different companies, the industrial strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the frequent sending home of students from the hostels were important factors as to why we could not host a large physical event for our academic day. This however did not stop us from carrying out one of our core ethos, which is academic empowerment. We hosted the PROFESSOR AYODEJI FEMI-PEARSE ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION in honour of our late and immediate past Grand Patron among students of tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Registration for this event started and ended on the 15th of October, 2021 and 31st of October, 2021, respectively. AKINWANDE FOLUSO VICE-ROY/CHAIRMAN, COMMITTEE ON ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES MediPhil 2021 EDITION AN ANNUAL PUBLICATION OF THE KB KLUB Transforming Healthcare Through Fintech PANG CMY ele ee aN The healthcare industry of every nation holds the key to a sustainable future for such nation. Healthcare, as we see today has developed from thecrudetimes oftrialsanderrorstotimeswhere we engage in laser technologies and augmented reality hologram-assisted surgery. The growth of technology has led to significantly huge booms and progressions in several industries across the world and one of such industries is the Financial Technology industry, popularly called FINTECH. Fintech refers to any business that uses technology to enhance or automate financial services and processes. The healthcare system, despite its technological development in care delivery, still suffers and struggles through a number of ways. Establishing proper data management, while also warding off cyber attackers poses to be at the forefront of problems the Healthcare system face. The healthcare industry receives one of the largest influx of consumers(patients) and as such, keeping proper track and security of patients’ details is most paramount. While documentation might be an existing problem, a proper infusion of Financial Technology could help tackle this problem successfully.Fintech companies can provide online services which could be in-app or website services that ensure ease is possible in working with patientdata. Through this, fintechcan ensure thatthe security, availability and effective retrieval of patient data is achieved, In the world today, processing payment for healthcare services has proven to not just be very costly, but also complicated, stressful, and time consuming, Aclearpathneeds to be provided when it comes to paying medical bills, as variations and errors are always bound to arise when manual labor is employed. With Financial Technology and the use of Artificial Intelligence-driven Data analysis, bills for medical procedures and drugs could be better processed, and this could help to build a strong credibility base for the hospital. Financial Technology could also help patients to better their savingsandinvestment habits. Itis also important to note that the ever-growing economy of cryptocurrency would always come in necessary when plans towards the transformation of healthcare are being made. Countries are beginning to establish a number of verified and thriving cryptocurrency coins as legal tender and this could aid in healthcare. Fintech companies that tow the path of insurance would find investments such as this brilliantly beneficial as it would be able to help patients who might incur huge hospital bills, thereby reducing, application for loans and taking huge burdens off patients whowould have togo throughrecovery.
