My opinion of the idea: “Anyone who speaks the language can teach the language.

” By Manuel
Guerrero.

In my opinion and based on my experience both as an English teacher and as a student in

different subjects not only English lessons I can tell you that not everybody can be a teacher or
a good teacher at least.

Being a good teacher or being able to teach the language implies and requires much more
than just speaking the language. In order to transmit the knowledge, you need to follow the
steps and tips explained in this lesson. For example, some of the most important aspects is
giving instructions. They must be clear, concise and as simple and easy to understand as
possible. This covers in part the section for teacher talk which mentions that TT must include
reduced grammatical forms, simplified vocabulary, clarification questions and more.

In order to achieve this, we must also be aware of what conditions surround our classroom. For
example, are we giving enough emphasis on “Technique” or too much, or on the contrary are
we so focused on “Content”? We must always try to find the balance and make sure we teach
in the Zone of Proximal Development (sweet spot) in order to avoid giving hard or impossible
concepts to learn or on the contrary they may be too easy so learning will not take place.

As a personal note. I have had the privilege to work along some very talented teachers and
this experience has enriched my understanding and delivering of the L2 in different types of
classes that include having students from different sociocultural backgrounds, needs, interests
as well as likes and dislikes. All these aspects make it difficult for a person who just speaks the
language be able to teach the language in a productive way.
