Unveiling the Indigenous Art and Craft of Bakat and its Economic Implications.
Since then, using basket is one of the most useful in carrying things especially in farming,
using basket is very helpful in carrying harvested crops from one place to another. Using basket
is also serves as carrier storage when transporting goods.
In Cebu, Bakat is a precious and still conserving art and craft of the land, it is made with
bamboo strips. Bakat symbolize the hardship, time, and the long years of crafting, not only in the
city of Cebu, since weaving is one of the older form of crafts and arts in the Philippines, before
this is very useful because back then farming and agriculture is the most form of living in the
country. Using baskets is one of the forms of vessel, storage and carrier of the goods.
When the time art and craft of Bakat is recognized stories and folk tales pertaining to
Bakat are being told to people in the region, there are also dances that is about Bakat also. These
stories and dances show how the arts is formed, also giving credit and celebrating the tradition
and culture to make it alive in modern times.
In modern time the demand and using Bakat is not that popular because buffalo or
carabao type of transporting is not that efficient today because modern vehicles are now
operating and introduce to us and many plastic and synthetic basket is being produce today and
people preferred modern type of good now. Bakat is now more common in the market as trash
lifter and some of the Bakat is displayed in some establishment as furniture. Whatever its use
Bakat still runs through generation, this craft is still useful even in modern times.
Cebu still preserve this craft to maintain the tradition and to help the Bakat weaver
operate and provide this craft to the market to make their living. Preserving hand craft is a big
help to the community of this art because it is still a opportunity to do business and to survive.
Modern type of baskets doesn’t stop the Bakat type of basket to be alive and it is now going
along in modernization because some of Bakat has the style that match the preference and
modern tastes of the people.
Thes type of arts and crafts is very needed to be preserve because it has the contribution
to the tradition and to the people also. Recognizing this as treasure can inspire the artist and
crafters of our land to continue in producing this kind of goods. Producing this craft can help the
local especially the indigenous people who mastered these type of hand crafts to have a source of
livelihood. Introducing this to generation and showing how beautiful or culture and tradition
must continuously pass in order to be remembered and not forgotten. Our art is beautiful we
should nourish it and show to the world the beauty of our own tradition. We can’t stop
modernity, but we should not also stop in passing the tradition in every generation.
