I. OBJECTIVES
The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of sets and the real number
A. Content Standards
system.
The learner is able to formulate challenging situations involving sets and real numbers
B. Performance Standards
and solve these in a variety of strategies.
At the end of the week, the students should be able to Illustrate well-defined sets,
subsets, universal sets, null set, cardinality of sets, union, and intersection of sets
C. Learning and the different of two sets and solve problems involving sets with the use of Venn
Competencies/ Diagram.
Objectives
At the end of the lesson, 100% of the students with 80% proficiency should be able to
solve problems involving sets with the use Venn Diagram.

IV. PROCEDURES
A. Reviewing previous Activity 1: Sports!
lesson or presenting Study the given Venn Diagram carefully and answer the questions.
the new lesson

1. How many people are swimmers? 6

2. How many people are boxers? 7
3. How many people are both swimmers and boxers? 3
4. How many people are just swimmers? 3
5. How many people are just boxers? 4
6. Are you a swimmer, boxer, both or neither?
B. Establishing a purpose Activity 2: Mobile Games!
for the lesson MOBA games or Multiplayer Online Battle Arena is a hugely popular genre
nowadays.
A group of high school students were surveyed whether they play Mobile Legends or Call
of Duty. Here is the result of the survey:
237 play Mobile Legends
120 play Call of Duty
57 play both Mobile Legends and Call of Duty
Questions:
1. From the group of high school students, how many of them play both Mobile Legends
and Call of Duty? 57
2. From the number of students who play Mobile Legends, how many of them Play
Mobile Legends but do not play Call of Duty? 180 How did you get your answer?
3. From the number of students who play Call of Duty, how many of them play Call of
Duty but do not play Mobile Legends? 63 How did you get your answer?
4. How many students were surveyed? 300 Explain how you arrived with your answer.
C. Presenting examples/ Using Venn diagram, draw 2 overlapping circles and name them:
instances of the new M for Mobile Legends and C for Call of Duty
lesson
M C Begin filling out the Venn diagram with the number of
students who play both games.
• Always start filling values in the Venn diagram from
the innermost value.

M C Account for 57 of the 237 who play Mobile Legends,

leaving 180 students who play Mobile Legends but not
Call of Duty.

180 play Mobile Legends only

M C Account for 57 of the 120 who play Call of Duty,

leaving 63 students who play Call of Duty but not
Mobile Legends.

63 play Call of Duty only

D. Discussing new Venn diagrams can be used to solve word problems involving union and
concepts and practicing intersection of sets. Here are some examples:
new skills #1 Example 1
A group of 25 high school students were asked whether they use either Facebook or
Twitter or both. Fifteen of these students use Facebook and twelve use Twitter.
a. How many uses Facebook only?
b. How many uses Twitter only?
c. How many uses both social networking sites?
Solution:
Let S1 = set of students who use Facebook only
S2 = set of students who use both social networking sites
S3 = set of students who use Twitter only

The Venn diagram is shown below.

E. Discussing new Example 2
concepts and practicing Among the 70 kids in Barangay Magana, 53 like eating in Jollibee while 42 like eating in
new skills #2 McDonalds. How many like eating both in Jollibee and in McDonalds? In Jollibee only? In
McDonalds only?

Check using Venn diagram.

Jollibee McDonalds

F. Developing mastery Board Work

(leads to Formative Out of 250 students, 62 are members of the Mathematics Club, 170 are members of the
Assessment 3) Science Club and 40 are in both clubs.
a. How many students are members of the Mathematics Club only? 22
b. How many students are members of the Science Club only? 130
c. How many students are members of the Math or Science Club? 192
d. How many students are not members of either club? 58
G. Finding practical
Imagine you have a group of friends who have different hobbies. Using a Venn Diagram,
applications of
compare and contrast the hobbies of your friends, highlighting the activities that belong
concepts and skills in
to multiple friends
daily living
H. Making generalizations Allow the students to answer the following:
and abstractions about 1. How can a Venn Diagram help you solve a problem involving sets?
the lesson 2. What are the key steps in using a Venn Diagram to solve a problem?
I. Evaluating Learning Seatwork:
Among 60 kids in Barangay Ugong, 40 liked spaghetti while 36 liked burger. There are 24
who liked both spaghetti and burger.

Use Venn diagram to illustrate the problem and answer the following questions:

J. Additional activities for Assignment:
application or The Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela launches the “Search for Top Ten
remediation Outstanding Alumni” in preparation for its 21 st Year Founding Anniversary Celebration.
The organizers publicized its launch by posting a tarpaulin in front of the school and
through the school’s Facebook page.
336 alumni learnt about the launch by the posted tarpaulin
439 alumni got to know about it through the school’s Facebook page
225 alumni were aware of the launch through the posted tarpaulin and the
school’s Facebook page
1. Use Venn diagram to represent the situation.

2. How many alumni came to know about the contest only through the posted tarpaulin
of the school?
3. Find the number of alumni who came to know about the contest through the school’s
Facebook page only?
4. How many alumni heard about the contest from the two sources?
V. REMARKS
VI. REFLECTION
A. No. of learners who earned 80% in the evaluation
B. No. of learners who require additional activities for
remediation
C. Did the remedial lessons work? No. of learners who have
caught up with the lesson
D. No. of learners who continue to require remediation
E. Which of my teaching strategies worked well? Why did
these work?
F. What difficulties did I encounter which my principal or
supervisor can help me solve?
G. What innovation or localized materials did I use/discover
which I wish to share with other teachers?
