I. OVERVIEW

A. BRIEF HISTORY

Regarded as to be the country’s oldest province, the written history of Aklan takes us
back to the middle of the 13th century when ten Bornean datus, together with their families,
fled the oppressive rule of the Bornean king, Sultan Makatunaw. In search for freedom, new
lands and better fortunes, they left Borneo’s shore on a flotilla of balangays (ships) sailing
northward. And one day, in 1250 (circa), they landed on the bank of the Sirwakan River near
the present town of San Joaquin, Iloilo. Immediately after, Datu Puti, the leader of the
expedition, came in contact with the Atis, the black-skinned, pygmy aborigines of Panay
Island. The Ati king named Marikudo and his queen, Maniwang-tiwang, welcomed the
newcomers. Datu Puti asked Marikudo if the latter’s people would be willing to move into
the hinterlands and mountains in favor of the newcomers.

B. GEOGRAPHY

Aklan is a mountainous province with over one-third of its land area sloping at 30
percent on the average. It is still one of the few provinces in the country to maintain a total of
some 709 hectares of virgin forest. Mountain ranges traverse the island: one; the northern
“knot” of Duyang and Tagacan; and the other, the Albinian mountain ranges in the west.
Mount Madyaas, at 2117 meters, is the second highest peak on Panay and is shared by Aklan
and Antique. The province has no active volcano, therefore, earthquakes have not been
severe, although three faults pass through it. The province has a total land area of 1,817 sq.
kms.

C. POLITICAL SUBDIVISION

The coastline of Aklan stretches for some 155 kilometers along 10 municipalities and
73 barangays. The coastline has two major physical features: Batan Bay in the south-east and
Boracay Island at the northern tip of Panay Island.

D. CLIMATE

Located at an elevation of 10.5 meters (34.45 feet) above sea level, Aklan has a
Tropical monsoon climate (Classification: Am). The city’s yearly temperature is 27.85ºC
(82.13ºF) and it is 0.63% higher than the Philippines' average. Aklan typically receives about
82.24 millimeters (3.24 inches) of precipitation and has 162.27 rainy days (44.46% of the
time) annually
 E. MAJOR INDUSTRIES

Aside from its vibrant tourism industry, farming is the basic livelihood in the interior
while fishing is the basic livelihood in the coasts. The province posts potentials in the
production of high valued and fibre crops. Aklan depends greatly on agriculture. The massive
and sustained education and research in agriculture production, the implementation of
national programs in agriculture, well-established marketing strategies, as well as the support
of the agribusiness industry and other private and non-government sectors, result in better
production and higher income of the farmers.

Palay is still the number one crop grown in the province. The total area planted with
rice is 42,218 hectares effective area, or 0.39 percent of the total agricultural area of the
province. Coconut also occupies a huge area planted among major permanent agriculture
crops. The total area planted with coconut is 32,276 hectares. Aside from palay and coconut,
other major crops that contributed to uplift the economy of Aklan are being developed. These
are high valued crops with export potential, such as banana (Lakatan), mango, rambutan, and
lanzones; and fiber crops.

II. HOW TO GET THERE

Ride a Bus Ferry from Philtranco Pasay going to IloIlo for 16 hrs and 45 mins. Then
take a walk to the Tagbac Terminal, Iloilo City for like7 mins. Ride a bus from Tagbac
Terminal, Iloilo City to Kalibo, Aklan.

-BY AIR
Aklan has two airports, the Godofredo P. Ramos Airport in Caticlan, Malay, Aklan
and the Kalibo International Airport in Andagao, Kalibo, Aklan which is the only
international airport outside of a major city. Kalibo is 45 minutes from Manila and 30 minutes
from Cebu by air.
