1: DESIGN WIND PRESSURES

This section shows the calculation of applied wind pressures in accordance with ASCE7-05 and SBC 301.

Known Information About the Structure

• The project area is located in NEOM, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
• The project area is located in an open terrain.
• The structure is classified as a closed structure.
• The component that is being analyzed is located at an elevation of
approx. 15.6 m above the ground.
• The component that is being analyzed will follow the same category as
the main structure. Hence, risk category II shall apply.

Effective Wind Area

span = 1.10 m Span length

Element Basis for Effective Area Effective Wind Area

Louver Walls Span length x 1/3 span length Aw = 0.4 m²
Effective area as per ASCE7-05 Section 6.2.

Zone Widths
Each wall surface is separated into two zones: Zone 4 "Interior Zone" and Zone 5 "End Zone". The
width of Zone 5 is defined as width "α" and calculated as shown below.

h = 15.60 m Mean height

L = 21.00 m Least horizontal dimension

α = 2.10 m 10% of least horizontal dimension

α = 6.24 m 40% of mean height
αmin = 0.84 m But should not be less than 4% of L
αmin = 0.90 m But should not be less than 0.9 m
α 2.10 m

Internal Pressure Coefficient

GCpi+ = 0.18 Positive value
GCpi- = -0.18 Negative value

Wall Pressure Coefficient

External Pressure Coefficient, GCp

GCp = -1.40 Zone 5 Negative

GCp = -1.10 Zone 4 Negative
GCp = 1.00 All Zones Positive

Design Wind Pressures

qh = q

P = qh [(GCp) - (Gcpi)]
