Our lesson for today is all about

communication processes, principles and
ethics.We will discuss the different
communication models .

D. Discussion
But first, who can give me his/her idea about
communication models class? It is a pictorial representation of the
communication process, ideas,
thoughts, through diagrams, etc
ma'am.
Very Good!

Why is it important to know the

communication models ? Anyone ? For me ma'am, it will help us to
Yes Anna? understand how communication
processes work.

Well said.

It is important because you will know the flow

of communication in order to make the
communication process.

Now let us proceed with the first model of

communication which is the Aristotle's model
of communication. (The students will listen to the
discussion)

- This model is proposed by Aristotle before

300 BC.
- His model is the most widely accepted
models of communication.
- The main focus of this model is the speaker
and the speech.

Did you understand class?

Yes ma'am
Take note that Aristotle,Plato and Greek
sophist are rethoricians .

Do you have any idea class, what is

rethoricians? Yes ma'am, rethoricians is the person
who are good at public speaking .

an important consideration in the study of

communication

- Aristotle emphasized that there are three

variables in the communication process and
these are the speaker, speech and audience

Again what are the three components of

Aristotle's model of communication? Anyone?
- These are the speaker, speech and
audience ma'am.
Take a look in the communication flow below:

In this model, the speaker variable is very

important. Without the speaker, there will be
no speech to be produced. Depending on the
profile of the audience, the speaker adjusts
his/her speech.

Do you have any idea what are the

demographic profile of the audience that the
speaker considers?

What are these? Yes ma'am

Very Good! Age, sex ,gender ma'am

Aside from the things mentioned , what else ?

Culture, race, religion, gender, social

and economic status, political
orientation or inclination among others,
Well said. ma'am .

Even beliefs, views and attitudes also play an

important role when talking about audience
because the audience will bringthese with
them when they decode a message in any
given situation.

Did you understand class?

Yes ma'am
Now, Let us talk about the second model of

communication which is the LASWELL’S

COMMUNICATION MODEL

Who do you think is the proponent of this

model? Anyone?
Harold Dwight Laswell ma'am .
Very Good!

In 1948, Harold Dwight Laswell described

communication as being focused on the
following Ws: Who says; What in ;Which
channe;l to Whom; and with What effect as
seen in the model below:

The whole process of communication begins

with the communicator (who) sending out a
message (what) using a medium (in which
channel) for a receiver (to whom)
experiencing an effect (with what effect)
afterwards. The process may be analyzed
through the content sent, the medium used,
as well as the effect on the recipient of the
message.

Again what are the five components of

Lasswell's Model of Communication class?

- Who (communicator), Says what

(message), in which hannel
(medium) , to whom (receiver) with
Excellent! What effect (Experiencing effect).

Now, Let's discuss the third model of

communication which is Shannon-weaver's
model of communication.

-This model was proposed by Claude Elwood

Shannon and Warren Weaver’s model of
communication and it was introduced in 1949.

-It was conceptualized for the functioning of

the radio and television serving as a model for
technical communication and later on,
adopted in the field of communication.

- These are the following components of this

model that were introduced. The noise,

reception, destination, and feedback have
been identified. Other terms such as
information source for the sender, transmitter
for the encoder, decoder (reception), and
receiver (destination) .

Again, who is the proponent of this model of

communication?
Claude Elwood Shannon and Warren
Weaver ma'am .
Very Good! They were the one who proposed
this model of communication .

What are the different components of

Shannon-Weaver's Model of Communication ?
Anyone ? Sender, encoder, channel, decoder,
Yes Andi? receiver and noise, feedback ma'am .

Very Good! Thankyou for your Ideas .

The last model of commuication is Berlo's

model of communication .

David Berlo’s model was conceptualized in

1960 and probably the most well-known
among the communication models. Initially,
Berlo’s model was called SMCR which stands
for sender of the message, sent through a
channel or medium to receiver. .

The major variables involved in the

communication process are (1) source, (2)
message, (3) channel, and (4) receiver.

Are we clear class?

Yes ma'am
Since communication is a two-way process, it
is important that you know the principles to
be observed to make it effective. For both ( Students will listen attentively to the
oral and written communication, you should discussion)

E. Generalization

What is the difference between Aristotle and

Lasswell model of communication? Anyone?
The difference of these model of
communication, is that Aristotle's model
has three variables in the
communication processes and these

are speaker, speech, and audience.

The center of this model are the
speaker and speech ,the audience is
just the passive listener In the
Lasswell's model, the whole process
of communication begins with the
communicator (who) sending out a
message (what) using a medium (in
which channel) for a receiver (to
whom) experiencing an effect (with
what effect) ma’am .

That's correct!

In the Aristotle's model of communication the

speaker variable here is very important.
Without the speaker, there will be no speech
to be produced. Depending on the profile of
the audience, the speaker adjusts his/her
speech.

How about the Shannon-Weaver and Berlo's

model of communication?
In the shannon-weaver model,
components are noise, reception,
destination, and feedback . Other terms
such as information source for the
sender, transmitter for the encoder,
decoder (reception), and receiver
(destination) were introduced while
Berlo's model of communication
involved source, message, channel,
and receiver.

Well said.
