Objectives must be met over the week and connected to the curriculum standards. To meet the objectives, necessary procedures must be followed and
if needed, additional lessons, exercises and remedial activities may be done for developing content knowledge and competencies. These are assessed
using Formative Assessment Strategies. Valuing objectives support the learning of content and competencies and enable children to find significance
and joy in learning the lessons. Weekly objectives shall be derived from the curriculum guides.
The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of systems of linear equations in
two variables.
The learner is able to formulate real-life problems involving systems of linear equations in
two variables and solve these problems accurately using a variety of strategies.

These steps should be done across the week. Spread out the activities appropriately so that pupils/students will learn well. Always be guided by
demonstration of learning by the pupils/ students which you can infer from formative assessment activities. Sustain learning systematically by
providing pupils/students with multiple ways to learn new things, practice the learning, question their learning processes, and draw conclusions about
what they learned in relation to their life experiences and previous knowledge. Indicate the time allotment for each step.
The teacher will ask the question: “What were the two methods we can use in solving
systems of linear equation in two variables?”
Possible Responses: substitution method, elimination method, and graphing method.
Learners will be asked to describe how each method is being used in solving systems of
linear equation in two variable.
The teacher lets the students realize that the previously discussed algebraic method in
solving systems of linear equations in two variables are needed in solving problems.
The teacher lets the students, in groups of five, do Activity 13 found on page 285 – 286 of
the Learner’s Module.

NOTE: teacher may use one item instead of three.
The teacher discusses with the students the process of arriving at the answers of each
item in the activity. Furthermore, the teacher will ask the students what mathematical
skills or principles is appropriate to use in the given situation. This will be a springboard
that in solving problems it will involve a process or steps. Polya’s Method of Solving Word
Problem will be introduced.
Polya’s Method of Solving Word Problem
1. Understand the problem.
- Make representation of the unknown.
2. Devise a Plan
- When you devise a plan (translate), you come up with a way to solve the
problem. Setting up an equation, drawing a diagram, and making a chart are all
ways that you can go about solving your problem.
3. Carry out the Plan
- Show your solution.
4. Look Back
- You may be familiar with the expression don't look back. In problem solving it is
good to look back (check and interpret). Basically, check to see if you used all your
information and that the answer makes sense. If your answer does check out,
make sure that you write your final answer with the correct labeling.
The teacher discusses each step with the students emphasizing that in solving problems
certain steps are needed to arrive at a definite answer.
Think – Pair- Share Activity
The teacher will ask the learners to answer the following word problems using Polya’s
Method of Solving Word Problems. (Use Substitution Method in Solving the Problem)
1. A quiz has ten questions worth 50 points. The test consists of Multiple Choice
Questions (MCQs) worth three points each and Fill in the Blanks Questions (FIB) worth
8 points each. How many MCQs are on the test?
2. The sum of two numbers is fourteen and their difference is two. Find the numbers.

The teacher summarizes the mathematical skills or principles used to solve problems
involving systems of linear equations in two variables using Substitution Method by asking
the following guide questions:
1. What technique in problem solving was used to solve the given word problems?
2. What mathematical skill or concept was used to solve the given problem?
3. How do you use substitution method in solving problems of linear equations in two
variables?

For question number 3, the teacher recalls the definition of substitution method and gives
an example to illustrate the process for better understanding.
3. Substitution Method is an algebraic method of solving systems of linear equations. In
this method, the expression equivalent to one variable in one equation is substituted into
the other equation to solve for the remaining variable.

Example:
x + y = 10 Equation 1
x–y=6 Equation 2
The teacher will demonstrate how to solve the given system of linear equation by
Substitution Method.
Individual Assessment
The teacher will ask the student to individually answer the given word problem applying
Polya’s Method in Solving Problem using the substitution method in the solution.

1. Jenny has P 1, 490.00 in P20.00 bills and P50.00 bills. If she has forty pieces in all, how
many of each denomination does she have? (lower the total)
