Materials needed:

Table salt (NaCl)

100 ml graduated
150 ml beaker or cups with capacity of 150 ml or greater

Procedure:

1. Measure 5.00 grams table salt (NaCl) into a 150 mL beaker.

2. Measure out 100.0 mL of tap water into a graduated cylinder.
3. Add water to the beaker containing the salt.
4. Stir or Swirl the beaker gently to dissolve the salt.
5. Answer the guide questions that follow.
Note : density = mass / volume

Calculations:

In the salt solution you prepared, answer the following questions.

1. What happened to the NaCl salt compound as it dissolved in water. Draw a picture or make a
model to show your understanding.

+ =

A. Percent Composition by Mass (m/m%)

1. What is the mass of the solute?
2. What is the mass of the solvent.
3. What is the mass of the solution?
4. What is its % Composition by mass? Show equation.

B. Percent Composition by Volume (v/v%)

1. What is the volume of the solute? (The density of table salt is 2.16 g/ml)

2. What is the volume of the solution?

3. What is its % Composition by volume? Show equation.

4. Are the % by mass and the % by volume the same in this example? Why?
